    Distributed human computation framework for linked data co-reference resolution

    Distributed Human Computation (DHC) is a technique used to solve computational problems by incorporating the collaborative effort of a large number of humans. It is also a solution to AI-complete problems such as natural language processing. The Semantic Web with its root in AI is envisioned to be a decentralised world-wide information space for sharing machine-readable data with minimal integration costs. There are many research problems in the Semantic Web that are considered as AI-complete problems. An example is co-reference resolution, which involves determining whether different URIs refer to the same entity. This is considered to be a significant hurdle to overcome in the realisation of large-scale Semantic Web applications. In this paper, we propose a framework for building a DHC system on top of the Linked Data Cloud to solve various computational problems. To demonstrate the concept, we are focusing on handling the co-reference resolution in the Semantic Web when integrating distributed datasets. The traditional way to solve this problem is to design machine-learning algorithms. However, they are often computationally expensive, error-prone and do not scale. We designed a DHC system named iamResearcher, which solves the scientific publication author identity co-reference problem when integrating distributed bibliographic datasets. In our system, we aggregated 6 million bibliographic data from various publication repositories. Users can sign up to the system to audit and align their own publications, thus solving the co-reference problem in a distributed manner. The aggregated results are published to the Linked Data Cloud

    Requirements Prioritization in Scaled Agile Distributed Software Development

    Context: The adoption of Agile methods has altered how Requirements Engineering (RE) is understood in development. Agile RE, for example, is a continuous and incremental process. There is a substantial amount of work being conducted with regards to Agile RE (Dikert et al., 2016; Inayat et al., 2015). The adoption of Agile RE practices in large-distributed software development is a recent trend. However, study on RE in Scaled Agile Distributed Software Development (SADSD) is growing, but little is known about requirements prioritization in SADSD, a decision-making process which plays a significant role in the successful development of software products. The motivation and gap emerged via Multi-vocal Literature Review (MLR) study that was conducted to understand the current state of art of RE in SADSD. Aim: The overall aim of this research study was to provide an in-depth understanding of how requirements prioritization may be done in scaled agile distributed software development. Research Methodology: To attain the aim of this research study, qualitative interpretive exploratory case study research methodology was adopted. Two large-distributed organizations (one from New Zealand, another was from Australia), employing Agile practices at the enterprise level, were studied. A corpus of data was collected via semi-structured interviews with practitioners (who were dispersed by location, function, and hierarchy), recordings of key decision-making events, requirements artefacts. An evolving strategy for the analysis of case study data was undertaken, primarily grounded within the data (i.e., grounded theoretic analysis) and complemented via deductive analysis. Thus, rich in-depth understanding of phenomena of interest is achieved. Findings: The obtained results show that requirements prioritization occurs at various levels in scaled agile distributed software development. The findings indicated that, there are typically three key decision-making levels where prioritization of requirements is performed. These typically occurred in the form of inter-iteration and intra-iteration prioritization: (i) portfolio level where business goals that connect with an organization’s overall business strategy are decided and prioritized as well as High-level Requirements (HLRs) that are needed to achieve them are formally signed-off and prioritized. (ii) domain level, two-fold role where in the first part, initial evaluation of HLRs is performed and submitted to portfolio level for formal decision-making. On the other hand, in the second part, Intermediate-level Requirements (ILRs) are decomposed from HLRs and priorities across teams are decided to implement them via short development cycle (e.g., 2 weeks). (iii) team level where Low-level Requirements are decomposed from ILRs wherever needed, and priorities are decided for the individual delivery teams. At all these decision-making levels, required prioritization activities occurred that are not clearly separated. Instead, activities are highly integrated and occurred with varying details, for example levels of requirements abstraction, decision-making events, roles and responsibilities of decision-makers. Another key finding of this research study is boundary spanning mechanisms that typically include boundary spanning event(s), boundary spanning requirement artefact(s), boundary spanner role(s), which primarily occurred when requirement prioritization decisions, are made at inter-iteration (i.e., portfolio level, second part of domain level). However, boundary spanning mechanisms partially occurred during intra-iteration prioritization as well, that typically yields knowledge acquisition, negotiation, consensus building, and conflict resolution, which are the key activities typically needed while making decisions on priority requirements. Conclusions: This research study provides implications for both practice and theory by providing an in-depth understanding of the requirements prioritization process in SADSD. As an outcome, a conceptual framework has been developed that has the potential to be applicable in the contexts similar to the organizations that were studied in this research study. Recommendations for the researchers have been given to replicate and/or enhance the findings of this research study by conducting further research in a similar context and/or different context

E-mail: [email protected] and [email protected] Cenchrus ciliaris is an apomictic, allotetraploid pasture grass widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. In this work, we aim to investigate the genomic organization and characterize the nature of repetitive DNA sequences in this species. Because of the apomictic propagation, various aneuploid genotypes are found and we analysed here a 2n=4×+3=39 accession. The physical mapping of Ty1-copia and Ty3-gypsy retroelements through fluorescence in situ hybridization with global assessment of 5-methylcytosine DNA methylation through immunostaining revealed the genome-wide distribution pattern of retroelements and their association with DNA methylation. About a third of Ty1-copia sites overlapped or spanned centromeric DAPI positive heterochromatin, while the centromeric regions and arms of some chromosomes were labeled with Ty3-gypsy. Most of the retroelement sites overlapped with 5-methycytosine signals, except some Ty3-gypsy on the arms of chromosomes which did not overlap with anti-5-mC signals. Universal retrotransposon probes did not distinguish genomes of C. ciliaris showing signals in pericentromeric regions of all 39 chromosomes, unlike highly abundant repetitive DNA motifs found in survey genome sequences of C. ciliaris using graph-based clustering. Developed Cluster probes gave strong signals mostly in pericentromeric regions of about half of the chromosomes, and we suggested that they differentiate the two ancestral genomes in the allotetraploid C. ciliaris likely having different repeat sequence variants amplified before the genome came together in the tetraploid. </p

    Salivary melatonin and total antioxidant capacity in reproductive and postmenopausal women

    Background: Periodontal inflammation causes an increased production of reactive oxidative stress leading to the production of reactive oxidative species, which causes tissue damage. Various studies have shown that Melatonin hormone is a potent antioxidant. Aim: To assess and compare the total antioxidant capacity and melatonin hormone level in saliva of healthy women, women with chronic periodontitis in reproductive and postmenopausal age groups, so as to render a comprehensive treatment in future. Materials and Methods: Total of 80 women were selected and divided into 4 groups. 20 aged 24-35 yr as group A with GI <1, 20 as group B aged 24-35 yr with GI ≥1 and CAL ≥3 mm. 20 aged 47-55 yrs as group C with GI <1 and 20 aged 47-55 yrs as group D with GI ≥1 and CAL ≥3 mm. Saliva samples were collected from all the groups and estimated for Total Antioxidant Levels and Melatonin hormone. Results were subjected to statistical analysis. Statistical analysis: The data obtained was subjected to student t test. Results: In the present study, there was significant reduction in both parameters in women with periodontitis when compared to healthy groups in both age groups with statistical significance P < 0.005 in reproductive age group. Conclusion: Salivary Melatonin could be used not only as one of the markers of the periodontal disease progression but also could be employed as an adjunct to traditional periodontal therapy in the therapeutic front owing to its protective nature

    Magnetoelectric control of surface anisotropy and nucleation modes in L1<sub>0</sub>-CoPt thin films

    The interplay between electric field controlled surface magnetic anisotropy and micromagnetic nucleation modes for L10-CoPt thin-film is investigated with density-functional and micromagnetic model calculations. The electric field redistributes electron states near the Fermi level, which has a fairly strong effect on the surface anisotropy, but due to inversion symmetry, the net anisotropy of the films with odd numbers of layers remains unchanged. By contrast, the micromagnetic nucleation mode is spatially asymmetric even for symmetric thin-films with odd numbers of layers. This leads to a reduction of the nucleation field (coercivity) and — for suitably chosen nanostructures — to substantial changes in the hysteretic behavior. In lowest order, the coercivity reduction is independent of the total film thickness. This counter-intuitive feature can potentially be exploited in magnetoelectric switching devices

    As sustainability becomes one of the critical topics of our times, organisations seek guidance on feasible and pragmatic ways to implement the same. To reduce the know-do gap, the thesis collaboration between Livework and the Technical University of Delft explores the problem statement: How can we use Livework’s service architecture approach for organisational change for customer-centricity (CC) for Sustainable futures (SF)? Empirical research and semi-structured qualitative interviews focus on two main areas of focus: 1. Livework’s service architecture approach; and 2. Sustainable futures. The results and findings of the interviews with Livework employees, their clients and five sustainability leaders in organisations led to defining a vision for Livework and a set of goals and objectives. To make the vision a reality a roadmap is designed. Turning the vision into action, the tool workshop: organisation as a garden is designed. The workshop imagines an organisation like a garden, where the soil a.k.a the core of the business has to thrive with a network of nurturers and influencers. Using this tool in a collaborative manner with organisations, Livework learns about their mindset, pain points and scope a plan of action to enable them to think in regenerative and thriving systems.Strategic Product Desig
