Sexually Transmitted Diseases among the Women of Northern Tanzania and the Government Initiatives to Control the Diseases in Colonial and Post-Colonial Tanzania From The 1890s to 2000s

    No full text
This paper explores the trends in prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Disease among the Women of Northern Tanzania and the Government Initiatives to control the diseases in Colonial and Post colonial Tanzania from the 1890s to 2000s. Specifically, the paper focuses on the forces that shaped the spread of STDs, the discourses on their socio-economic impact; and the government initiatives to control the diseases. Rather than focusing on STDS on the general population as it has been the case with many other studies, this paper examines the history of STDs among the women in northern Tanzania. It is argued that the spread, impacts and responses to the disease were determined by global context, government and culture. On understanding the cultural and biological aspects of STDs the paper draws the combination of political economy and social constructionism theories. The paper has established that the prevalence of STDs can be traced specifically during the early contact of African community with the external world, the sailors and the merchants, that its spread was driven by different factors; and that the diseases enlisted varied initiatives from both government and society at large. To support the aforementioned findings, this paper used secondary sources namely historical and medical books, journal articles, theses and electronic materials. This study is significant as it adds to a body of historical knowledge on how STDs affected women and the initiatives the community, colonial and post-colonial Tanzania governments took to control such diseases

Intermarriages of Filipino immigrant women in Prince George

This research project is a qualitative case study of 10 intermarried Filipino immigrant women. The women were asked specific questions about the Filipino cultural practices/patterns that were brought into the marriage, how they resolve the differences, the qualities of a Filipino woman that help resolve differences, and the attitudes they have on intermarriage, through a face-to-face interview. A demographic information sheet was also used to gather information about themselves and their husbands, and a rating scale about the presumed advantages and disadvantages was administered to validate the information obtained in the interview. Results showed Filipino cultural practices and differences are not a barrier to a stable relationship. The women participants admitted that they probably exerted more effort than those who have intramarriages. They have learned to compromise for the betterment of the relationship because they see marriage as a lifetime partnership. The women mentioned the virtues of ' pakikisama/pakikibagay', ' matiisin' as qualities that help resolve conflicts/differences. They also claimed they are hardworking, caring, patient, and flexible. The rating scale validated the positive attitude of the women towards intermarriage. They expressed hesitance to come out and seek help from mental health professionals or counsellors, but would prefer bicultural/bilingual mental health professionals or counsellors who would truly understand where they are coming from. This project concludes that cultural differences should not be seen as a threat to a stable relationship but as ingredients that contribute to enhance the flavor of the marriage, making it exciting, enviable and enriching.--Page ii.The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b120574

Positive equilibria of weakly reversible power law kinetic systems with linear independent interactions

In this paper, we extend our study of power law kinetic systems whose kinetic order vectors (which we call “interactions”) are reactant-determined (i.e. reactions with the same reactant complex have identical vectors) and are linear independent per linkage class. In particular, we consider PL-TLK systems, i.e. such whose T-matrix (the matrix with the interactions as columns indexed by the reactant complexes), when augmented with the rows of characteristic vectors of the linkage classes, has maximal column rank. Our main result states that any weakly reversible PL-TLK system has a complex balanced equilibrium. On the one hand, we consider this result as a “Higher Deficiency Theorem” for such systems since in our previous work, we derived analogues of the Deficiency Zero and the Deficiency One Theorems for mass action kinetics (MAK) systems for them, thus covering the “Low Deficiency” case. On the other hand, our result can also be viewed as a “Weak Reversibility Theorem” (WRT) in the sense that the statement “any weakly reversible system with a kinetics from the given set has a positive equilibrium” holds. According to the work of Deng et al. and more recently of Boros, such a WRT holds for MAK systems. However, we show that a WRT does not hold for two proper MAK supersets: the set PL-NIK of non-inhibitory power law kinetics (i.e. all kinetic orders are non-negative) and the set PL-FSK of factor span surjective power law kinetics (i.e. different reactants imply different interactions)

Reactant subspaces and kinetics of chemical reaction networks

This paper studies a chemical reaction network’s (CRN) reactant subspace, i.e. the linear subspace generated by its reactant complexes, to elucidate its role in the system’s kinetic behaviour. We introduce concepts such as reactant rank and reactant deficiency and compare them with their analogues currently used in chemical reaction network theory. We construct a classification of CRNs based on the type of intersection between the reactant subspace R and the stoichiometric subspace S and identify the subnetwork of S-complexes, i.e. complexes which, when viewed as vectors, are contained in S, as a tool to study the network classes, which play a key role in the kinetic behaviour. Our main results on new connections between reactant subspaces and kinetic properties are (1) determination of kinetic characteristics of CRNs with zero reactant deficiency by considering the difference between (network) deficiency and reactant deficiency, (2) resolution of the coincidence problem between the reactant and kinetic subspaces for complex factorizable kinetics via an analogue of the generalized Feinberg–Horn theorem, and (3) construction of an appropriate subspace for the parametrization and uniqueness of positive equilibria for complex factorizable power law kinetics, extending the work of Müller and Regensburger. © 2017, The Author(s)

Vicious Binaries: Gender and Authorial Paranoia in Dreiser’s Second Choice, Howells\u27 Editha, and Hemingway’s The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber

Feminist treatment examining the binary structures of passivity and activity in association with the female and male characters of all three stories. Reads Hemingway’s construction of Margot as the most paranoid. Contends that though excluded from the action of the story, Margot destroys not only men’s lives but also men’s self-concepts. Harris sums up, “If these stories tell us anything about our culture, it is, at the very least, that male writers walk in fear that women will retaliate against male postures of author-ity.

Reconstructing Beethoven: Mauricio Kagel’s Ludwig van

The subject of this dissertation is Ludwig van, Mauricio Kagel’s tribute to Beethoven on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the latter’s birth, which consists of three separate, but closely related, versions: a film, a musical score and a recording. The main aim of this project is to analyse the performance problems that musicians have to face when realising the score Ludwig van, which is an entirely indeterminate collage of Beethoven’s music, and to suggest ways of tackling them. For this purpose, all three versions of the work are studied in this thesis. The film is examined in terms of the issues it raises concerning Beethoven’s reception and of the function of its music, which consists of unusual performances of Beethoven’s works. The score is analysed from the perspective of postmodern theory and 20th-century art movements, while the roles of the composer and the performer are discussed and redefined. The recording is studied as a sample of how Kagel himself chose to realise his own score. Finally, the difficulties I encountered in my own attempts to realise Ludwig van are discussed, and the ways in which I dealt with them are presented. The conclusion at which this dissertation arrives is that, in works of such indeterminacy as Ludwig van, the performers are required to step outside their conventional role and act partly as composers. Compared to works that are considered challenging to the performer in the conventional sense, of requiring technical virtuosity, this work presents a more fundamental challenge, which has to do with overcoming personal boundaries: it asks the performer not to execute a pre-composed work, but to create their own version of Ludwig van. Since very little has been written about Ludwig van by performers with an academic background, this thesis can offer valuable assistance to prospective performers of the work in their attempt to balance between the highly charged conceptual aspect of the composition and the practical need to achieve its successful performance
