Small-disturbance angle stability enhancement through direct load control - Part I - framework development
This paper is the first of a two-part paper on the application of selective direct control of loads for small-disturbance angle stability enhancement in power systems. The change in the utility business model and developments in enabling technologies open up new possibilities for power system reliability enhancement. This paper proposes preventive modulation of selected loads through direct control for small-disturbance angle stability enhancement. An analysis framework based on the structured singular value theory has been proposed in which the controllable load range at selected buses that satisfies the desired stability robustness performance criterion is determined. Two conceptually different approaches for analysis of load modulation have been presented. Results have been presented on an equivalent of the Western Electric Coordinating Council system in the second part of this paper.PT: J; CR: 6216063, US *CIGRE, 1999, TF380216 CIGRE *IEEE, 1992, 42151992 IEEE ANDERSON PM, 1994, POWER SYSTEM CONTROL BALAS GJ, 1993, ANAL SYNTHESIS TOOLB DJUKANOVIC M, 1998, IEEE T POWER SYST, V13, P1311 DJUKANOVIC M, 1999, IEEE T POWER SYST, V14, P635 DOYLE JC, 1982, P I EL ENG D, V129, P242 ETO J, 2002, P IEEE WINT POW M NE, P1002 HIRST E, 2002, NEW ENGLAND DEMAND R ILIC M, 2002, P IEEE WINT POW M NE KUECK J, 2003, CALIFORNIA ENERGY CO RAMANATHAN B, 2003, P N AM POW S ROLL OC SKOGESTAD S, 1998, MULTIVARIABLE FEEDBA YOUNG PM, 1993, THESIS CAL TECH PASA YU XC, 2001, IEEE T POWER SYST, V16, P456; NR: 16; TC: 0; J9: IEEE TRANS POWER SYST; PG: 9; GA: 039NOSource type: Electronic(1
Frequrncy response characterization
The fabricated device is characterized for its dynamic properties. The characterization setup is as follows. This piezoelectric buzzer is, in turn, attached to a rigid block using double-sided tape. Now, the piezo buzzer is actuated, and the response of the device is captured by the stroboscope software of Polytec vibrometer. Since a base excitation is given to the device, the relative displacement (displacement of the proof mass minus the displacement of the piezoelectric actuator) is represented in the Bode plot. The theoretical natural frequency is 289 Hz. And the experimentally observed resonant frequency is 268 Hz, as it can be seen that there is a phase change of 180 degree at 268 Hz.
The Q factor determined by the 3 dB bandwidth method is 335, so the slide film damping coefficient, c, is estimated to be 6.05e-10 Ns/m
Effect of leaf extract of Pongamia glabra (Vent.) (Fabaceae) on histological changes of fat body of Periplaneta americana (Linn.) adult male
The fat body of Periplaneta americana usually contains trophocytes, urocytes and mycetocytes. The fat body showed some marked changes in insects injected with a sublethal concentration of Pongamia glabra [P. pinnata] leaf extract (0.05 ml of 5% concentration) through the intra-peritoneal membrane. In treated insects, the lipid vacuoles of the trophocytes disintegrated, and swollen and irregular shaped nuclei were conspicuous. The mycetocytes decreased in size, and the urocytes mostly disintegrated..RE: 16 ref.; SC: ZA; HE; VE; CA; TR; PA; 0JSource type: Electronic(1) http://upei-resolver.asin-risa.ca?sid=SP:CABI&id=pmid:&id=&issn=0378-9519&isbn=&volume=21&issue=4&spage=355&pages=355-359&date=1997&title=Journal%20of%20Entomological%20Research&atitle=Effect%20of%20leaf%20extract%20of%20Pongamia%20glabra%20%28Vent.%29%20%28Fabaceae%29%20on%20histological%20changes%20of%20fat%20body%20of%20Periplaneta%20americana%20%28Linn.%29%20adult%20male.&aulast=Ramanathan&pid=%3Cauthor%3ERamanathan%2c%20B%3bRajasekarapandian%2c%20M%3bSelvi%20Sabhanayakam%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E19980505846%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3EJournal%20article%3C%2FDT%3
Concentration in Knowledge Output: A case of Economics Journals
This paper assesses the degree of author concentration in seven economics journals, which were published in India during 1990-2002. To measure the degree of author concentration, Lotka's Law was used. Moreover, we also make an exploratory analysis of the geographic, economics subfield and institutional concentration in 704 economics journals. An important finding of this paper is that specialized journals in the sample report the highest degree of author concentration. This result is quite similar to the findings by Cox and Chung (1991). Furthermore, there are several instances showing that the journals lean towards certain norms; this may affect the flow of innovative ideas into economics. We conclude that a knowledge activity, involving the high degree of concentration and a biased publication process, may affect the flow of new ideas into the discipline.Concentration, Lotka's Law
Gender dynamics in data collection on reproductive health: field experiences in Kerala, India
Reproductive health researchers tend to choose interviewers of the same sex as those interviewed. In many societies, it is considered unacceptable for men to interview women on topics of an intensely personal nature like sexuality or contraceptive use. In this paper, the author analyzes 21 interviews and 16 focus group discussions (FGDs) undertaken during a field study on the Quality of Services in the Indian Family Welfare Programs conducted in Kerala. The analysis was based on the model which identifies the principal participants in the interview as the respondent and the interviewer. In all these cases the contradiction between the gendered roles of the interviewer and interviewee are visible. However, if viewed in the context of the model provided by Briggs, it is clear that these contradictions are due to the differences in the social roles that the interviewers assumed and that the respondents ascribed to them and in the interactional goals of the interviewers and the respondents. Contradictions were also experienced during the FGDs. Educational sessions on contraception are a good tool for gathering sensitive information instead of the conventional interview, where the gendered roles are so crucial to the information gathering exercise itself
Quality of care in laproscopic sterilisation camps: observations from Kerala, India
Laparoscopic sterilisations are performed in institutional as well as mobile settings, known as camps, under the Indian Family Welfare Programme. One such camp, held at a Taluk (sub-district) hospital in Palakkad district in Kerala, was observed as part of a study on quality of services in this Programme. Services in sterilisation camps in Kerala were found to be better than elsewhere in India, but they did not conform to the standards laid down by Programme authorities specifically for such camps. Due to the high demand for these services, 48 sterilisations were performed by only one surgical team in just over two hours in one day, in clear violation of the regulations. Counselling of the women before surgery was inadequate, the surgeon never changed his gloves, the linen on the operating tables was never changed, and the facilities in the building were grossly insufficient to support the women's requirements afterwards

Role of collaborative supply chain of innovation in firm’s performance
This work depicts the Supply Chain of Innovation (SCoI) including only those kinds of relationships related to the purchase and selling of R&D commodities. The theoretical framework represents the propensity of a firm in improving its innovation performance thanks to its collaboration experience and positioning in SCoI. We validate our theoretical framework on a sample of 208 biotechnology companies involved in 814 SCoI agreements. Our results show the positive direct impact of SCoI collaboration experience on innovation performance and a mediating role of positioning in SCoI on the abovementioned link
