    AbstractIn Gun and Ramakrishnan [‘On special values of certain Dirichlet L-functions’, Ramanujan J.15 (2008), 275–280], we gave expressions for the special values of certain Dirichlet L-function in terms of finite sums involving Jacobi symbols. In this note we extend our earlier results by giving similar expressions for two more special values of Dirichlet L-functions, namely L(−1,χm) and L(−2,χ−m′), where m,m′ are square-free integers with m≡1 mod 8 and m′≡3 mod 8 and χD is the Kronecker symbol (D)(\frac {D}{\cdot }). As a consequence, using the identities of Cohen [‘Sums involving the values at negative integers of L-functions of quadratic characters’, Math. Ann.217 (1975), 271–285], we also express the finite sums with Jacobi symbols in terms of sums involving divisor functions. Finally, we observe that the proof of Theorem 1.2 in Gun and Ramakrishnan (as above) is a direct consequence of Equation (24) in Gun, Manickam and Ramakrishnan [‘A canonical subspace of modular forms of half-integral weight’, Math. Ann.347 (2010), 899–916].</jats:p

    Three-Dimensional Time-Harmonic Electromagnetic Scattering Problems from Bianisotropic Materials and Metamaterials: Reference Solutions Provided by Converging Finite Element Approximations

    A recently developed theory is applied to deduce the well posedness and the finite element approximability of time-harmonic electromagnetic scattering problems involving bianisotropic media in free-space or inside waveguides. In particular, three example problems are considered of which one deals with scattering from plasmonic gratings that exhibit bianisotropy while the other two deal with bianisotropic obstacles inside waveguides. The hypotheses that guarantee the reliability of the numerical results are verified, and the ranges of the constitutive parameters of the media involved for which the finite element solutions are guaranteed to be reliable are deduced. It is shown that, within these ranges, there can be significant bianisotropic effects for the practical media considered as examples. The ensured reliability of the obtained results can make them useful as benchmarks for other numerical approaches. To the best of our knowledge, no other tool can guarantee reliable solutions

    Well Posedness and Finite Element Approximability of Three-Dimensional Time-Harmonic Electromagnetic Problems Involving Rotating Axisymmetric Objects

    A set of sufficient conditions for the well posedness and the convergence of the finite element approximation of three-dimensional time-harmonic electromagnetic boundary value problems involving non-conducting rotating objects with stationary boundaries or bianisotropic media is provided for the first time to the best of authors&rsquo; knowledge. It is shown that it is not difficult to check the validity of these conditions and that they hold true for broad classes of practically important problems which involve rotating or bianisotropic materials. All details of the applications of the theory are provided for electromagnetic problems involving rotating axisymmetric objects

    On Pillay's conjecture in the general case

    Let M be an arbitrary o-minimal structure. Let G be a definably compact, definably connected, abelian definable group of dimension n. Here we compute: (i) the new intrinsic o-minimal fundamental group of G; (ii) for each k>0, the k-torsion subgroups of G; (iii) the o-minimal cohomology algebra over Q of G. As a corollary we obtain a new uniform proof of Pillay’s conjecture, an o-minimal analogue of Hilbert’s fifth problem, relating definably compact groups to compact real Lie groups, extending the proof already known in o-minimal expansions of ordered fields

    Peer-response is an important aspect of the process approach to teaching writing which has gained increasing attention in the ESL context. It offers great opportunities for ESL student-writers to share their writing evaluate the work of their peers and discuss their observations and opinions about writing in an authentic learning environment. There are, however, gaps in current research about the student-writers’ discourse in the peer-response groups, how that discourse affects their revisions and writing development. The interactive and collaborative learning theories that underlie the process writing approach to learning to write in a second language made it possible to observe the participants in the peer-response activity over a period of fourteen weeks. The sixteen ESL student-writers from a public university in Malaysia, purposefully selected, were from homogenous linguistic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Extensive training, which focussed on affective, cognitive, socio-cultural and linguistic aspects, was provided to the participants before they participated in the peer-response activity. The peer-response groups for this study were structured to incorporate collaborative learning. The participants worked in pairs to write the first draft of an essay of their choice and two writing-pairs in a group took turns to respond to each other’s draft. The peer-response sessions were recorded and transcribed. After the peer-response sessions, the participants had the opportunity to make changes to their drafts. Participants turned in their first drafts and revised papers for analysis. Post-revision interviews were conducted to further understand the revision process. Data for this qualitative case study consisted of the participants’ first drafts and revised papers, peer-response checklists, transcripts of the peer-response and post-revision interview sessions as well as the researcher’s observation entries and field-notes. A thematic analysis method was used to analyze the data. The spoken and written data of the eight writing-pairs offered a variety of indications regarding the types of interactions that occurred during the peer-response sessions, the types of feedback that produced the most positive changes and improvement to the revised papers. The participants were able to provide valid suggestions for each other’s drafts, respond critically to peer feedback and incorporate high proportions of valid peer suggestions in their revisions. This improved the quality of the revised papers, facilitated autonomous writing skills and development of independent writers. The revision process improved the student-writers’ critical skills and subsequently enabled them to improve their own drafts. Training the participants for the peer-response activity improved the quality and quantity of peer interaction about the drafts and revision strategies. This study has offered some new insights into the forms, functions and effectiveness of trained peer-response in a tertiary-level ESL writing classroom. The spoken data offered some indications that this activity can be pedagogically useful in the ESL setting because it promotes interaction and negotiation of meaning among the student-writers. It also creates an authentic atmosphere in which ESL student-writers can share their written drafts with their peers and comment on their drafts

Biofuels, derived from biomass conversion, such as biodiesel, bioethanol, biohydrogen, and biogas, are sustainable and renewable sources of energy, which are also considered CO2 neutral.
