    Computational Fluid Dynamics based Flow Diagnostics in Hydraulic Capsule Pipeline Bends

    Hydraulic Capsule Pipelines (HCPs) are the third generation of pipelines that are based on the transport of hollow spherical, or cylindrical, capsules by the force exerted on them from the carrier fluid, which is water. These hollow capsules can be filled with a variety of cargo goods, such as minerals, jewellery etc. The hydrodynamics of this transport phenomena is quite complex, and researchers around the globe have been trying to analyse the hydrodynamics of such systems. However, most of these studies are based on experimental investigations, which can provide reasonably accurate results for the pressure drop etc. across the pipeline. However, the flow structure within HCPs cannot be easily mapped using experimental facilities. Furthermore, in case of pipe bends, the difficulty level increases exponentially due to a constant curvature in the geometry of the pipeline, and hence mounting the flow measuring instruments can be very challenging. The present study makes use of the advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based solvers, with powerful computing services, in order to analyse the flow structure within HCP bends. It is expected that this information can provide valuable information to the HCP designers, not only to calculate pressure drop across HCP bends, but in order to select the correct size etc. bends for the pipeline

    We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles.     Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     A pocket-integrated miniature, dual-band, and high gain textile MIMO antenna for 5G and WiFi wearable applications

    This paper reports a miniature low-profile denim textile 2-port MIMO (multiple-input-multiple-output) antenna for dual-bands: 5G sub-6 3.5 GHz and Wi-Fi 5.2 GHz wearable applications. This MIMO antenna has impedance bandwidths and peak gain of 310 MHz and 8.3 dBi and 950 MHz 13.0 dBi at 3.5 and 5.2 GHz, respectively. This MIMO antenna has a compact area of 0.078 λ02, with both antenna elements of the MIMO being a modified elliptical patch, L-shaped stubs for impedance matching, and a circular decoupling ring to achieve > 25 dB port isolation. The designed antenna is very tiny and integrated into the shirt's pocket. It is tested in two positions, i.e., hidden (integrated inside the pocket, for example, military applications) and visible (when integrated on the pocket surface for conventional communication). Moreover, the antenna's working is analyzed in these positions (hidden and visible), and it was found that it functions well in both 5G sub-6 GHz and Wi-Fi frequency bands with nearly close gain values and communication range. This MIMO antenna has a very small ECC (envelope correlation coefficient) of 0.006/0.002 in both frequency bands, which shows high channel isolation. The 1 gm/10 gm SAR (specific absorption rate) values at 3.5 and 5.2 GHz are 0.034/0.057 and 0.026/0.0132 W/Kg, respectively, substantially lesser than the recommended values of FCC/ICNIRP

    The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law

    Abstract The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals

    Approximating Sparsest Cut in Low Rank Graphs via Embeddings from Approximately Low Dimensional Spaces

    We consider the problem of embedding a finite set of points x_1, ... , x_n in R^d that satisfy l_2^2 triangle inequalities into l_1, when the points are approximately low-dimensional. Goemans (unpublished, appears in a work of Magen and Moharammi (2008) ) showed that such points residing in exactly d dimensions can be embedded into l_1 with distortion at most sqrt{d}. We prove the following robust analogue of this statement: if there exists a r-dimensional subspace Pi such that the projections onto this subspace satisfy sum_{i,j in [n]} norm{Pi x_i - Pi x_j}_2^2 >= Omega(1) * sum_{i,j \in [n]} norm{x_i - x_j}_2^2, then there is an embedding of the points into l_1 with O(sqrt{r}) average distortion. A consequence of this result is that the integrality gap of the well-known Goemans-Linial SDP relaxation for the Uniform Sparsest Cut problem is O(sqrt{r}) on graphs G whose r-th smallest normalized eigenvalue of the Laplacian satisfies lambda_r(G)/n >= Omega(1)*Phi_{SDP}(G). Our result improves upon the previously known bound of O(r) on the average distortion, and the integrality gap of the Goemans-Linial SDP under the same preconditions, proven in [Deshpande and Venkat, 2014], and [Deshpande, Harsha and Venkat 2016]

    This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

    Embedding Approximately Low-Dimensional l_2^2 Metrics into l_1

    Goemans showed that any n points x_1,..., x_n in d-dimensions satisfying l_2^2 triangle inequalities can be embedded into l_{1}, with worst-case distortion at most sqrt{d}. We consider an extension of this theorem to the case when the points are approximately low-dimensional as opposed to exactly low-dimensional, and prove the following analogous theorem, albeit with average distortion guarantees: There exists an l_{2}^{2}-to-l_{1} embedding with average distortion at most the stable rank, sr(M), of the matrix M consisting of columns {x_i-x_j}_{i<j}. Average distortion embedding suffices for applications such as the SPARSEST CUT problem. Our embedding gives an approximation algorithm for the SPARSEST CUT problem on low threshold-rank graphs, where earlier work was inspired by Lasserre SDP hierarchy, and improves on a previous result of the first and third author [Deshpande and Venkat, in Proc. 17th APPROX, 2014]. Our ideas give a new perspective on l_{2}^{2} metric, an alternate proof of Goemans' theorem, and a simpler proof for average distortion sqrt{d}
