    No full text
[[abstract]]This thesis is about a series of collaborative action researches for an STS teacher's professional development. The author as the case teacher went through the following four stages. Stage 1: An STS teacher workshop. Stage 2: STS learning under anchored "greenhourse effect" STS activities. Stage 3: Under scaffolded instruction, designing and carrying out "acid rain" STS activities. Stage 4: Under less scaffolded instruction, carrying out the expanded "acid rain" activities which encourage learners' cooperative creation with STS exploratory experiment. Throughout the four stages, the author as learner/teacher/researcher, used portfolio as learning and assessment tools to construct pedagogical content knowledge. The results of this study showed that, through collaborative action researches, the four-stage teacher development program and value-added portfolio building method were able to promote STS teacher's professional capabilities. This value-added method in building portfolio motivated the teacher's self-reflection, self-evaluation and self-regulation, self-confidence and willingness to take charge of his own learning. The teacher in turn was able to promote learner's STS literacy, especially value-centered creativity. The author suggests that teachers should be encourage to promote their professional capabilities through collaborative action researches.

Organised by: Cranfield UniversityRequirements elicitation for surgical equipment development is a challenging task. On the one hand, designers need to acquire a significant amount of domain and procedural knowledge to understand and discuss surgical tasks, which is difficult and resource intensive. On the other hand, there are restrictions to surgeons observation related to ethics, regulations and availability. This paper proposes a framework for the elicitation, representation and communication of surgeons’ experience and their translation into requirements and concepts for new surgical instrument development. The framework is showcased by the development of an improved surgical instrument for laparoscopic surgery.Mori Seiki – The Machine Tool Compan

[[abstract]]The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of Science-Technology-Society (STS) instructional model with traditional instructional model on transportation-related technological literacy and problem-solving behaviors of the senior high school students. In order to achieve the objectives, an eight-week segment of the technology curriculum for senior high schools was taught to two similar, intact classes. One class used STS instructional model while the other used traditional instruction. The author-designed STS Learning Activities were developed according to the related references and the STS approach. A pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design was employed to measure the differences of students’ achievements under the conditions of two different teaching approaches. The major instruments used to assess students’ achievements in this study were the Problem Solving Inventory and the Test of Transportation-related Technological Literacy. In addition to determine student attitudes and feelings after the learning experience, those in the experimental group completed a questionnaire on learning perception. The major results of this research were as follows: 1. Compared with Science Education, it was more suitable to use STS instructional model in the Technology Education. 2. Students’ problem-solving behaviors could be enhanced through implementing STS instructional model. 3. Among all students, there was no significant difference in the achievement of female students and male students. 4. In the experimental group, there was no difference between both genders’ achievements. It meant that STS instructional model was suitable for both genders to learn technology. 5. Students’ learning interests could be increased through implementing STS instructional model on technology curriculum in senior high schools.

Wind loading of STS cranes: Investigating improved calculation methods

    No full text
Wind loads acting on STS cranes are an important design parameter to be taken into account when designing STS cranes. Current calculation standards such as the EN13001-2 overestimate wind forces. The goal of this research is to propose an improvement on current calculation standards. Wind tunnel tests were performed to assess the results of standard calculations. Computational fluid dynamics were validated against the wind tunnel and used to investigate the root cause of this difference. This research proposed the use of the shielding coefficients found in the DIN 1055 standard for horizontal elements in conjuncture with the EN13001-2 standard for more accurate calculations.Mechanical Engineering | Multi-Machine Engineerin

[[abstract]]The purpose of this research is to develop STS modules, to perform them in actual and to see if the designing of the STS activities could promote students’ interests in learning science, their will to explore actively and knowledge-constructed ability. Moreover, through the process of the action research, the researcher will understand the STS belief better and equip herself with more of the teacher’s STS professional abilities. The relationship between the STS instruction and the Grade 1-9 Curriculum is also discussed in this paper. The core competence which the Grade 1-9 Curriculum wants to develop can be attained by STS strategy. The findings and conclusions of the study: 1.Most students thought that the STS activities could arouse their learning interests and they had positive attitudes toward the activities. 2.Performance of students on each assessment was generally good. And the correlativity of each assessment revealed that it’s important to perform multiple assessments. 3.The STS instruction could guide and develop students’ multiple abilities, including the communication, inquiry, decision-making and problem- solving abilities. And the effectiveness of “cooperative learning” was also approved. 4.Teacher-student and peer interactions were good and the atmosphere was relaxing, lively and active throughout the STS activities. 5.Through the activities in the research, the researcher understood the STS belief better and the researcher’s personal ability of instructional design was promoted. 6.The STS strategy can integrate with the Grade 1-9 Curriculum Guidelines, making it one of the good instructional innovations.

[[abstract]]As the rapid development and improvement in information technology and computer network, the application of computer had make a hugely change in education, and gradually to form a information share environment. The application of computer network in education let user proceed their study without spatiotemporal limit, and communicate with teacher or other users via computer network. A point that distant education system should take into account is that how to use computer and network technology existed to help users to study that subject with proper learning strategy. The design of user interface become to be a most important work which affect the satisfication of users and their study wills. At the same time, it also infect users' study effect in the system. The goal of this study is to develop STS distance education system. It include: (1) the design of STS distance education system; (2) to realize the design; (3) establish the STS database. The interface of STS distance education system is Vorld Wide Web (WWW), which is the most popular over the world because it is easy to use. Under this environment, people who do not know how to use computer can handle it easily and proceed their study effectively. In hardware, we place the whole system on the Internet and send informations and messages via computer network. We establish STS resource web site to popularize STS education and provide users informations and materials they want. The content of database can be devided into three parts: the first part is the STS theory and news, including the development, discussion and analysis of STS; the second part is memoir posted by Dr. Wang's laboratory and our laboratory; the third part is tuition model developed by Dr. Wang's laboratory and our laboratory. AT last, for the purpose to communicate with users,we try to write CGI scripts to send home pages dynamically, nd trace users' study pathway successfully.

    No full text
