Author considers application of different IT tools for processing of current and archival records. Author’s starting point is archival processing no matter where it occurs – in the primary environment of records creator or in the secondary environment of archival institution. Article relies on conclusions arising from records continuum model and T. Thomassen and D. Kusen writings. In the article, author focuses on development of computer generated archival description functionality of different IT tools in archives. Author discusses initial problems, examines possibilities and relevance of this functionality, and analyses user requirements on the example of particular records creator

In the 21st century, feminist theorists of archival science call for changes in archival science and archival processes, such as appraisal, to give a voice to marginalized communities and thus lead to a more just society. They do this by calling for the pluralization of this scientific discipline through which different archival realities would be accepted and by introducing the concepts of ethics of care and radical empathy. In addition, the conception of the value of archival material is also changing, as is the role of archivists in its appraisal. In this case, feminist theorists call for feminist standpoint appraisal and considering the material's affective value. At the same time, an increasing number of community archives is closely related to the feminist approach to archival science. Such archives consider the affective value of archival material and cooperate with the communities they represent. At the same time, they differ significantly from traditional mainstream archives, with whom they are often not on good terms because of their unfair treatment of marginalized groups. Their goal is to achieve a more just society in which different ways of knowing will be considered equally valuable and prevent symbolic annihilation by giving a voice to marginalized communities. This paper explores and analyzes the impact of feminist theory on archival science, the change in the profession's discourse and the impact on archival practice

In recent years, Croatian institutions responsible for the production/accumulation of records have begun utilizing digitally-stored records and digitised records on a large scale. They have also moved from filing systems toward document management systems, records management systems or enterprise content management systems. The implementation of document/records/enterprise content management systems is not a trivial change for an organisation if we consider the integration of such systems with existing databases and other solutions related to records management practice. The typical results of the implementation of a new digital environment (besides the increasing new advantages) are new challenges for the records creator and the archive that supervise it. This article addresses such business and recordkeeping advantages and challenges

Appraisal of archival material is one of the most important procedures of material management in all forms. International Research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems, better known under the abbreviation InterPARES, is focused on the preservation of records that were originally created and maintained in digital form, in various electronic systems. The appraisal of digital material was an essential part of the research of all stages of the InterPARES project. This thesis presents the stages of the InterPARES project, the process of appraisal of archival material and other related processes such as extraction, long-term preservation and acquisition. After that, it discusses the concept of material value, the tools used to determine this value and the features of digital material will be discussed. Finally, the thesis addresses evaluation of digital material according to the results of the InterPARES projects. The goal of the thesis is to analyze the notion of appraisal through all stages of the project. At the end of the thesis, it is concluded that the conceptualization of the notion of the value of digital materials by the members and working groups of the InterPARES community

Gospodarenje informacijama (engl. Information governance is a constantly evolving interdisciplinary field that develops strategies for information in organizations and companies. This paper will explain how it differs from data governance and information technology governance, the context during it's origin and what is all covered by it. Information governance deals with, among other things, with privacy and security of information which includes risk management, defense from cyber-attacks, e-mail encryption and other methods used during the everyday operations of the organization. Additionally, the paper will answer which documents to preserve and for how long, what to do with them after that period and how to apply an information governance program in an organization taking into account their goals and needs, as well as the legal landscape

Poznavanje utjecaja moći omogućuje propitivanje uloge arhiva u suvremenom društvu i mjesta arhivistike u sustavu znanosti. Postmoderna promatra arhive u njihovoj suvremenosti. The basic intention of this article is to show relations between postmodern thought and archival science, through its theoretical presumptions and practical inurements. In concordance with the formulations of impossible introduction (in Curtius sense) used in many texts before, it is hard to epitomize a great number of paradigmatic courses in current Theory, especially in the text which is in a pursuit of recent theoretical implications on today's archives as important scientific and social institutions. First of all, article gathers information about postmodernism which leads us to dissimilar comprehensions of the term and further various outlines. After a short review of some ideas from different aspects, this paper raises a question about connections among postmodernism, modernism, tradition and contemporarity according to its cultural establishment and possible political uses of technology. For the purpose of that three relevant authors (and three approaches to our hereditary traint for knowledge, tradition and technology) have been consulted in order to describe function of archival scientific discourse, proceedings with archival items according to some metaphorical concepts that lie beneath scientific methods and problem of legitimation of science. Can it be achieved through the influence of technology or is it that the same technology is a part of a broad cultural sphere? Foucault informed scientists about them being dependent on power and its own strategies in which scientific discourse is polyvalent tactics. The thought of the archives as a part of the government and transgressive places at the same time can be widened according to Foucault's ideas of complex social strategies and archival notions of a new kind of governance. Considering relations between archives, its discourse and power, it is obvious that the main tasks of archival science have changed: historical research is no longer the only goal and the concept of history itself has altered. Structures that enable scientific knowledge are contradictive according to Derrida. In the center of structure often lies the external idea which operates traditional devices and rhetoric. The deconstruction of these instruments enables us to focus on the other part of binary opposition between records creator and records. Nevertheless, we are working with texts, with records which were considered as mere supplements. It would not be exaggerated to say that archives are multicultural destination points… if so, their objects must be cultural signs and that implies some new approaches in records analysis and interpretation. What kind of the semiotic model of a sign can be applied on archives and what can be achieved by using this approach? The shifts from the classical representational sign toward derridian marque and Peirce’s interpretant have consequences on appraisal and relationship between record and creator. These two issues are related with archival practice. What happens with social role of the archivists when they become interprets of cultural legacy? Lyotard searched for new legitimating principles of scientific discourses in the time distrustful of great narrations such as emancipation and progress. Instead of legitimating through performance, he suggested real co-existence of many scientific world descriptions. This assumed at least two consequences: technology can affect archives only as a part of a wider political condition and, second, no other external ethical, political or any language can legitimate archival science as its own discourse can. This can provide an un-doubtful autonomy for archival practice. Paralogical legitimation of the archives as cultural institutions of different communities can be achieved only in social context what actualizes broader understanding of archives. Postmodernism can juxtapose autonomy of archival science with plurality of interpretations of archives. The purpose of this article is to ask certain questions and initiate some new approaches not just because there is a bad time for solid solutions, but because the only possible way to establish Archive as an institution of today can be found through discussion

Data Archiving as a New Postcustodial Phase and the Need to Redefine Archival Terminology

Implicira li ta nova faza arhivistike redefiniranje stručne terminologije i kako ga izvesti?Data archiving could represent a new phase in postcustodial archiving. This article underscores the importance of modifying archival practice and discourseto accommodate data archiving. The author considers data and informationas essential as records in archival practice and, consequently, in archival discourseand legislation. He also proposes redefining archival terminology to alignthe profession with contemporary times. The article starts by analysing the notion of archival science within thelarger context of information. After that, the author discusses the Croatian legaldefinitions related to current and archival materials. Retention schedules for creatorsalready include procedures involving databases and data, prompting theauthor to question whether the definitions of materials should be expanded tocover non-documentary forms of materials. They are being produced in the usualtrack of businesses and kept as archival, and they are vastly produced in the privatesphere. Data quantities become enormous, and archivists should not ignorethis. The author considers broader terms of data and information over the narrowerterms of the document because the document is linked to a group of dominantor exclusive information-inscribing practices from the past. He emphasizesthe importance of treating data archiving as a crucial aspect of contemporaryarchival practice, as data now makes up most of the information landscape. Thearticle provides several examples demonstrating that data is frequently the only orsuperiour source for future information purposes in comparison to records. Theauthor presents a SWOT analysis of archival practices, focusing on data archiving, in their current state. The skills needed for archivists are being assessed for properdata archiving practices. The subject of archival science, namely archives, has a twofold meaning:as a place dedicated to storing materials and as the materials themselves, thedocumentary legacies of record creators. There are similarities between the impactof technological changes and social changes that go with them of the last two tothree decades of the twentieth century and today. The author compares the firstwave of postcustodialism with today’s happenings. The first postcustodial phasewas initiated by the computer revolution and its impact on document production. The notion of the archive as an exclusive place of records was broadened, and archival science caught up with the new reality. In our contemporary society,we rely on data in all aspects of our social and private lives. With this similarlysignificant change, if we should redefine the second meaning of our subject, archives, are we looking to the next phase of postcustodial archival discourse? Thelast part of the article deals with the redefinition of archives as materials and proposesa way to redefine them
