Photoprotective potential of emulsions formulated with Buriti oil (Mauritia flexuosa) and Vitamin E against UV irradiation on human keratinocytes and fibroblasts cell lines
Get PDFConsidering the belief that natural lipids and edible substances are safer for topical applications and that carotenoids are able to protect cells against photooxidative damage, wea have investigated whether topical creams and lotions, produced with Buriti oil and commercial surfactants, can exert photoprotective effect of against UVA and UVB irradiation. Emulsions and plain Buriti oil were diluted in DMEM medium supplemented with 10% FBS. Cell treatment was divided in two stages, prior and after being exposed to 30 minutes of UVA plus UVB radiation or 60 minutes to UVA radiation. Emulsions prepared with ethoxylated fatty alcohols as surfactants and containing α-tocopherol caused phototoxic damage to the cells, especially when applied prior to UV exposure. Damage reported was due to prooxidant activity and phototoxic effect of the surfactant. Emulsions prepared with Sorbitan Monooleate and PEG-40 castor oil and containing panthenol as active ingredient, were able to reduce the damages caused by radiation when compared to non-treated cells. When the different cells lines used in the study were compared, keratinocytes showed an increase in cell viability higher than fibroblasts. The Buriti oil emulsions can be considered potential vehicles to transport antioxidants precursors and also be used as adjuvant in sun protection

UVA-activated riboflavin improves the strength of human dentin
No full textThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of UVA-activated riboflavin (UVA-RF) on the mechanical properties of non-demineralized human dentin. Dentin specimens obtained from 20 teeth were randomly divided into the following four groups: group 1 (control): no treatment, group 2 (low UVA-RF): specimens were exposed to UVA-RF for 10 min, group 3 (medium UVA-RF): specimens were exposed to UVA-RF for 30 min, and group 4 (high UVA-RF): specimens were exposed to UVA-RF for 60 min. Three-point flexural test and Raman spectroscopic analyses were performed. The mean flexural strengths (MPa) were 129.96, 128.96, 144.21, and 147.54, and the mean elastic modulus (GPa) were 8.59, 8.38, 10.21, and 9.87 for groups 1 to 4, respectively. Raman spectra showed chemical modifications of dental collagen under medium and high UVA-RF treatment. No full textn this paper we aim to present and reflect on the main contributions of the Egyptian psychoanalyst Moustapha Safouan to psychoanalysis. Being a follower of Jacques Lacan\u27s teachings since the beginning of his seminars, he\u27s the author of a solid contribution to psychoanalysis and a translator of Freud, La Boétie and Shakespeare to the Arabic language. Having chosen Lacan as his supervisor, he becomes one of his loyal disciples. The wide experience arising from his clinical, theoretical and institutional journey allows him to be the author of a body of work whose relevance stands out among the French and international psychoanalytic movement.Neste artigo pretendemos apresentar e refletir sobre as principais contribuições do psicanalista egípcio Moustapha Safouan para o campo psicanalítico. Seguidor do ensino de Jacques Lacan desde o início de seus seminários, Safouan é autor de uma sólida contribuição para a psicanálise e tradutor de Freud, La Boétie e Shakespeare para o árabe. Desde que escolhe Lacan como supervisor, permanece um de seus leais discípulos.
