70-90-GHz self-tuned polyphase filter for wideband I/Q LO generation in a 55-nm BiCMOS transmitter
A low-power quadrature local oscillator (LO) generation scheme embedded in a direct-conversion E-band transmitter (TX) is presented. A single-stage polyphase filter is closed in a loop and continuously tuned by means of a quadrature phase detector to maintain precise I/Q signals independently from LO frequency and component variations, thus making the solution wideband and robust against process, supply, and temperature variations. The analog phase detector, realized with fully balanced analog multipliers, is critical to reach high accuracy. Careful circuit analysis and simple design solutions are proposed to avoid systematic phase errors and to maintain high detector gain despite the high operating frequency. The TX, realized in BiCMOS 55-nm technology, delivers a maximum linear output power of 20.5 dBm at 80 GHz with 14% power efficiency. The LO buffers consumes 115 mW from 2.3-V supply while the LO calibration circuits need 16 mW only and allows to maintain a remarkable image rejection ratio of 40 dB or better over 70-90 GHz
Lateral variation of crust and upper mantle structures in NW Iran derived from surface wave analysis
To obtain the shear velocity structure across North-West of Iran and surrounding areas to a depth of 160 km, we performed a namely Hedgehog nonlinear inversion on Rayleigh wave group velocity dispersion curves in the period range from 7 to 60 s. The distributed dispersion curves are the results of our surface waves dispersion tomography using the data of 280 local and regional seismic events, recorded by the medium and broad band seismic stations in the region. We outline different crust and upper mantle structures for the study area based on calculated group and shear velocities. Our results reveal relatively low velocities at the shorter periods (7 - 10 s) in the presence of sedimentary basins (e.g. South Caspian Basin) and for eastern Anatolia and relatively high velocities along the Sanandaj-Sirjan Metamorphic zone, Alborz, Talesh and the Lesser Caucasus Mountains. By depth inversion of group velocities, we observed a 14 km thick sediments in South Caspian Basin and Kura Depression. Based on our maps at 20 s, we outline different crustal models for the region and highlight the differences between South Caspian Basin and NW Iran, on one side, and the similarities between the South Caspian Basin and Kura Depression, that extend beneath Talesh, Alborz and Lesser Caucasus, on the other. Comparing the shear velocity of lower crust in South Caspian Basin and Kura Depression with that of NW Iran proves different origination of lower crust in the basin, probably oceanic source, because of its significant higher shear velocity rather than NW Iran. The extension of lower crust beneath Talesh is more than middle crust while in Alborz and Lesser Caucasus the amount of extension for middle and lower crust is the same The analysis of group velocities at longer periods (≥ 35 s) and obtained shear velocity models allows us to outline different lithospheric structures and crustal depth in the region. The high group velocities in Talesh, South Caspian Sea and Lesser Caucasus on one side and Zagros Folding and Thrust Belt on the other, beside the result of shear velocity models suggest the presence of a stable and thick mantle lid that seems to be thin or absent in the eastern Anatolia and much of NW Iran. The shallowest Moho and Lithosphere Asthenosphere boundary depth of 37 and 63 km, were observed in Easter Anatolian Accretionary Complex. The thin mantle lid in this region has affected the whole crust in such a way that we observed the lowest shear velocities inside the crust in this region. We observed a significant thickening of both crust and lithosphere in Sanandaj-Sirjan Metamorphic zone comparing to Urmieh Dokhtar Magmatic Arc and Zagros Folding and Thrust Belt on its two sides

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Towards Versatile Fast Training for Wearable Interfaces in Prosthetics
Developing embedded systems tailored for resource-constrained platforms enables the design of robust frameworks for controlling artificial arms in prosthetic applications. This work presents preliminary results of the implementation of a novel platform for EMG-based gesture recognition application based on Hyper dimensional Computing (HDC), a novel brain-inspired classifier. HDC reaches classification accuracy comparable with traditional statistical learning algorithms, while its training phase is one order of magnitude faster, resulting suitable for the implementation on low-power and low-cost digital platforms. The proposed setup acquires EMG data from 8 sensors, performs training in 1.2 s on the embedded microcontroller and classifies 5 gestures with 88% accuracy, a latency of 10ms and energy consumption of just 0.65 mJ per classification

Mixed-Integer Linear optimization algorithm for Volt/Var Control on a distribution grid with renewable penetration
Nowadays, the diffusion of renewable energy sources and electric vehicles are turning the traditional passive distribution networks into active grids, requiring Distribution Management System (DMS) to exploit Information and Communication Technology (ICT) improvements to get a smarter control through wider communication and local monitoring. In this paper, a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) algorithm is developed to perform Volt/Var Optimization (VVO), providing the optimal setting for all the available controllable devices which minimizes power losses and violations of network constraints. Necessary linearization affects acceptably the accuracy of the computed outcomes and the resulting fast computational time makes it suitable for online application within a real DMS

High-Efficiency SiGe-BiCMOS E-Band Power Amplifiers Exploiting Current Clamping in the Common-Base Stage
This paper proposes high-efficiency E-band power amplifiers (PAs) in SiGe-BiCMOS based on a common-base output stage. A comparison between common-emitter and commonbase configurations proves the latter yields higher output power, enhanced linear range, and robustness against self-heating issues. Furthermore, the base-emitter junction of the BJT in common base can be exploited to implement the current-mode version of the well-known diode voltage clamper, so that the dc current tracks the signal current. This yields an improvement of efficiency, particularly in power back-off. Two PA designs are described: a single-path, two-stage amplifier and a second version delivering higher output power with transformer-based power combining at minimal efficiency degradation. At 80 GHz, the two PAs deliver 18- and 20.5-dBm OP1 dB and 19- and 21.5-dBm Psat. The PAE at OP1 dB is 22% and 20%; at 6-dB back-off, it is still 8.5% and 7.2%, respectively. The prototypes demonstrate two-three times higher PAE compared to previously reported silicon PAs with similar output power at the E-band
