Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar is one of the writers of twentieth century Turkish Literature. Although he has written works in different fields of literature, he is mainly known for his novels. One of the important works of the author is Fahim Bey ve Biz (Fahim Bey and We). The principal character of the novel is in contradiction with his environment. These conflicts are reflected in his personality. In this context, we also see that the hero has a dualist personality. Seeing himself as rich although he is poor, and pretending to be a businessman even though he has no job are indications of his dualist personality. The important reason for this is that the society excludes Fahim Bey, and does not treat it tolerantly. Fahim Bey is exposed to social exclusion with all his oddities. Withdrawing to his own shell, he is completely alone. Social exclusion is defined as a phenomenon that consists of contradictions between the individual and the society. In this article, Fahim Bey ve Biz novel by Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar is examined within the contect af the concept of social exclusion. The contradictions leading to social exclusion between the society and the individual were tried to be revealed by analyzing. Descriptive analysis method was used in the study

Macro Consumption Function in an Islamic Framework by Fahim Khan: Comments

This is a critique of an article of M. Fahim Khan pulished in an earlier issue of the same journal It argues that in other economic systems including capitalism too play an important role to mitigate the hardships of the poor but unlike the Islamic system they do not show their impact on income determination. Transfer of income to the poor via zakah will reduce the saving potential of the economy. To what extent this will be neutralized by the rich abstaining from frivolous spending due to the fear of God is uncertain. Hence the macro model of the author to demonstrate the superiority of the Islamic system is not convincing

Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Biology, 2018.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 245-265).Living cells are biological computers - constantly sensing, processing and responding to biological cues they receive over time and space. Devised by evolution, these biological machines are capable of performing many computing and memory operations, some of which are analogous to and some are distinct from man-made computers. The ability to rationally design and dynamically control genetic programs in living cells in a robust and scalable fashion offers unprecedented capacities to investigate and engineer biological systems and holds a great promise for many biotechnological and biomedical applications. In this thesis, I describe foundational platforms for computation and memory in living cells and demonstrate strategies for investigating biology and engineering robust, scalable, and sophisticated cellular programs. These include platforms for genomically-encoded analog memory (SCRIBE - Chapter 2), efficient and generalizable DNA writers for spatiotemporal recording and genome engineering (HiSCRIBE - Chapter 3), single-nucleotide resolution digital and analog computing and memory (DOMINO - Chapter 4), concurrent, autonomous and high-capacity recording of signaling dynamics and events histories for cell lineage mapping with tunable resolution (ENGRAM - Chapter 5), continuous in vivo evolution and synthetic Lamarckian evolution (DRIVE - Chapter 6), tunable and multifunctional transcriptional factors for gene regulation in eukaryotes (crisprTF - Chapter 7), and an unbiased, high-throughput and combinatorial strategy for perturbing transcriptional networks for genetic screening (PRISM - Chapter 8). I envision the platforms and approaches described herein will enable broad applications for investigating basic biology and engineering cellular programs.by Fahim Farzadfard.Ph. D

The article titled “Optimization of conditions for the biological treatment of textile dyes using isolated soil bacteria” ([version 1; referees: peer review discontinued]. F1000Research 2018, 7:351 https://doi.org/10.12688/f1000research.13757.1) by Shafkat Shamim Rahman and colleagues, has been retracted by F1000Research on grounds of misconduct by the first author. Following publication of the article, the editorial team at F1000Research were notified by Romana Siddique, from BRAC University, that the data presented in this paper significantly overlaps with the data in her recently published article : Siddique and Alif; ARRB, 22(5): 1-12, 2018; Article no.ARRB.38637; https://doi.org/10.9734/ARRB/2018/38637.  In response to our queries to the authors, the second and last author listed on this article, Fahim Ahmed Alif and M. Mahboob Hossain, have stated that they were not aware of the submission of this article to F1000Research, and did not agree to be authors. We have evidence which confirms their statement.  After further investigation by the F1000Research team, and a separate investigation by BRAC University, it has become clear that Shafkat Shamim Rahman was not involved with the research presented in this paper, and that the decision to submit and publish the article was taken independently by him, and not his listed co-authors. BRAC University has confirmed that Shafkat Shamim Rahman is not currently based at their institution.</ns4:p

On a generalization of power algorithms over max-plus algebra

    No full text
In this paper we discuss a generalization of power algorithms over max-plus algebra. We are interested in finding such a generalization starting from various existing power algorithms. The resulting algorithm can be used to determine the so-called generalized eigenmode of any square regular matrix over max-plus algebra. In particular, the algorithm can be applied in the case of regular reducible matrices in which the existing power algorithms can not be used to compute eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors.Accepted Author ManuscriptMathematical Physic

Evaluating the Impact of Instructional Strategies on Students’ Performance: Statistical Evidence from ANOVA and Tukey\u27s HSD Post Hoc Test

    No full text
This study aimed to evaluate the most effective in-class instructional strategies that enhance the academic performance of pre and post-graduate students in Karachi, Pakistan. It reviewed the three instructional strategies, including the Lecture-Based Instructional Strategy, Activity-Based Instructional Strategy, and Constructivist Instructional Strategy. The targeted population of the study was comprised of the pre and post-graduate students currently enrolled in various public-sector universities in Karachi. The achieved scores for writing and reading English text from the students were measured along with the implemented instructional strategies in their classes. The findings reveal that the academic performance of pre and post-graduate students, in terms of writing and reading English text, differs based on the various in-class instructional strategies (teacher-centred, activity-based and constructivist). Since the constructive method was found to be producing the highest writing and reading scores, significantly outperforming both traditional lecturer-based and activity-based methods, the study recommends that teachers and curriculum developers consider the constructive instructional method

Nicotine-induced escalation of ethanol intake - an effect mediated by the vagus nerve

Abstract Supervisor: Docent Mia Ericson Author: Fahim Sharan Nicotine-‐induced escalation of ethanol intake-‐ an effect mediated by the vagus nerve? There is a clear connection between alcohol abuse and smoking. Previous studies show that 83% of those with alcohol abuse also smoke and that alcoholism is 10 times more common in smokers than in non-smokers. This clinical observation also finds support in pre-clinical animal studies where nicotine treatment has shown to increase ethanol intake in rats. Current research shows that central nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) play a vital role in the dopamine releasing effects of ethanol. However, other studies have demonstrated that blockade of peripheral ganglionic nAChR invokes some kind of adaptations, which in turn escalates ethanol intake. We have reason to believe that both peripheral and central nAChR are involved in ethanol consumption. Since the vagus nerve receives input via nAChRs and is a big contributor to the autonomic nervous system, our hypothesis is that this nerve mediates the nicotine-induced escalation of ethanol intake. Thus this present study focused on designing a method that allowed us to surgically ligate certain branches of the vagus nerve in the rat thus removing the peripheral nAChR influence of ethanol intake. If we manage to establish a successful method we will later be able to let vagotomized rats undergo an ethanol-consumption study where we can evaluate if the abolished influence of the vagus nerve changes nicotine-induced escalation of ethanol intake. A total of 16 animals across 4 trials were operated on during the course of this study. 6 animals were judged to have a successful vagotomy, resulting in a 40% success rate for the surgical procedure. However, we faced great challenges with stabilizing the animals in the post-operative phase due to persisting weight loss, but were finally successful in stabilizing the weight in trial 4 with a liquid diet. All in all, we managed to achieve a successful gastric vagotomy with a stable post-operative weight gain in only 1 animal of the 16 operated. Conclusively, more surgical practice is needed before achieving an optimal method. However, we believe that with practice, a higher success rate of vagotomy can be achieved and along with a post-operative diet based on liquid diet we will have vagotomized animals stable enough to undergo a voluntary ethanol intake paradigm. Key words: Ethanol intake, nicotine, vagus nerve, vagotomy

Multi-criteria supplier selection in the airline retail industry

    No full text
Since a company can merely perform as good as allowed by its suppliers, the extreme importance of supplier selection in supply chain management has been increasingly recognized. Supplier selection can be best described as a highly complex process due to the involvement of many, sometimes conflicting, both qualitative and quantitative criteria. The goal of supplier selection is to select the most suitable supplier(s) for meeting a company’s specific needs. This research presents a case study on solving the supplier selection problem in the airline retail industry by means of a two-phased methodology. The first phase of the methodology employs a conjunctive screening method, which aims to reduce the initial set of potential suppliers prior to the comprehensive final choice phase. The second phase of the methodology employs a fuzzy AHP in which suppliers are evaluated against thirty-six sub-criteria. By means of combining the decision maker’s preferences and experts’ knowledge, the employment of the developed methodology will eventually result into a ranking of suppliers that enables to select the most suitable supplier(s).Transport & LogisticsInfrastructure Systems & ServicesTechnology, Policy and Managemen
