Title: Restricted Parallelism and Regular Grammars, Author: Robert D. Rosebrugh, Location: ThodeThis thesis studies the properties of k-parallel right-linear languages. An infinite hierarchy of language families is found and closure properties of these families are studied. The language families are characterised in terms of simple languages and non-deterministic generalised sequential machine mappings. In addition a characterisation of k-right-linear simple matrix languages by k-parallel right-linear languages with a control device is given.ThesisMaster of Science (MS

Mbatha, S. 2017. U Zulu: Umlando Nobuqhawe BukaZulu (The history and heroism of the Zulu nation) [Book review]

    No full text
The book basically provides a narrative account of the long history of the Zulu nation during and after the colonial period. It focuses on the series of battles and wars fought during the reign of King Shaka, including their encounters with the colonial forces, which caused the displacement of many tribes and their settlement in various parts of the African continent. The battle of Isandlwana in 1879, where the Zulu troops conquered the British forces, is a classic example. The author attempts to paint a picture of different layers of the struggle for colonial emancipation of the black people in general and the Zulu nation in particular. Mbatha believes that black South Africans should be writing their own history as they were directly impacted by colonialism. The eyewitness accounts provided by the elders who were directly involved in colonial battles and wars should inform the writing of such histories. The author seeks to address competing perspectives on the subject of colonialism and its impact on the Zulu nation

    SGML and Exceptions

    No full text
The Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) allows users to define document type definitions (DTDs), which are essentially extended context-free grammars in a notation that is similar to extended Backus--Naur form. The right-hand side of a production is called a content model and its semantics can be modified by exceptions. We give precise definitions of the semantics of exceptions and prove that they do not increase the expressive power of SGML. For each DTD with exceptions we can construct a structurally equivalent extended context-free grammar. On the other hand, exceptions are a powerful shorthand notation--- eliminating them may cause exponential growth in the size of a DTD. z The research of the first author was supported by the Academy of Finland and the research of the second author was supported by grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and from the Information Technology Research Centre of Ontario. Initial Design to Develop a Cadastral System that Supports Digital Cadastre, 3D and Provenance for Singapore

    No full text
It is challenging to design and develop a cadastral system that supports digital cadastre, 3D and provenance. Digital cadastre encodes cadastral information in digital format like LandXML, which allows for automation and returns high productivity. 3D enables capturing and representing the third dimension, which is critical for the development in both above and below the earth surface. Provenance allows the management of cadastre through lifespan. This is important in cadastral investigation and analysis for being informed how a cadastral parcel is being evolved over certain time period. The paper discusses the initial design of a new cadastral system called Cadastral Survey Management System (CSMS). The paper shares the SG LandXML, a Singapore profile of LandXML, which is designed based on the ICSM’s ePlan model, which in turn has been implemented in Australia and New Zealand. SG LandXML will consolidate the existing forms and data in different formats and to facilitate automation. By having a pre-validation mechanism at the Registered Surveyors’ (RS) Web Portal, the submissions by the surveyors through the Portal can be checked upfront before the authority’s inspection and approval. This will reduce turnaround times and speed-up the overall approval process. The fundamental of the system is the cadastral data model, which is designed based on the ISO 19152 - Land Administration Domain Model (LADM). The notion of BeginLifeSpanVersion and EndLifeSpanVersion in LADM has been adopted to design the provenance framework for the system. With the framework, every parcel when it is first submitted to the system will be date-stamped and the changes to the parcel will be captured for the parcel’s entire lifespan. This will allow the system to retrieve a parcel from its inception and to compare its changes over times. The paper also demonstrates some preliminary investigations on how different types of parcels, both 2D and 3D, can be integrated based on the notion of Level of Details from city modelling. The paper proposes methods how different types of parcels can possibly be encoded in SG LandXML to support 3D Cadastres

Comment: The nature of the ADAS model based on the ISLM model

Rao suggests that the Rowan demand curve does not exist but that result is obtained through treating the system as a simultaneous equation problem that will inevitably obtain the standard aggregate demand (AD) result. The Rowan procedure is a conditional function that makes planned AD conditional on planned aggregate supply (AS)--a quintessential Keynesian process. This results in an AS-dependent AD curve that is upward sloping. This system can be shown to be stable, have a firm connection to measures of national income accounting without dependence on notions of equilibrium and implications for econometric estimations. Sacrifice in the Eucharist in the texts of the fathers from the New Testament to the council of Chalcedon

This thesis examines the evidence for the notion of Eucharistic Sacrifice which is found in the original texts of all the principal Fathers and ecclesiastical authors of the Early Church. The period covered is from the time of the writing of the New Testament to the Council of Chalcedon in 451 A.D. Each of the principal Fathers is examined in historical order, as far as this is possible, except when there is another link between them such as their city of origin. Apart from a few exceptions, the texts are presented in their Greek or Latin original in the footnotes, but an English translation is supplied for every case in the main text of the thesis. The aim of the thesis is not to provide an exhaustive analysis of the above data, but to present them in an orderly way and to make initial exploratory comments on the texts themselves and of the work of various scholars. The final conclusion resulting from this exercise is that, although there is indisputable evidence that the notion of Eucharistic sacrifice was widely upheld by Patristic authors, its actual content varied from author to author and presents a richness which it is not easy to classify

It's known that, in the second half of the 20th century, the debate around the notion of author received a significant boost from the theoretical formulations of Roland Barthes. In this text, comparing the poetics of Jonas Samudio with the theories about the notion of author, we will move forward to think about a notion of queer authorship that appears as dissent from Western logic. In order to achieve this, we make use of the work of Roland Barthes, Jack Halberstam, in The queer art of failure, and the poetics of Jonas Samudio. It will be seen that, far from the ode to the individual, so common in the Western capitalist society, we can think about a queer authorship, a body that writes but that is identified in a binarism. In this perspective, authorship becomes more erotic and communitarian, exalting not the self and its binomials, but a burning knot between the body and writing. Occupying the in between : a typology of architecture as the mediator

Dissertation MArch(Prof)-University of Pretoria, 2012.The paradoxical nature of society leads to great dualities in the study of motion and space, creating conflicting relationships. The role of the architectural design is to facilitate these motions to become a stage for the spectacle in its immediate context. The dissertation presents an architectural proposal that addresses the notion of duality. By identifying the possibilities within a liminal context, an architectural narrative creates scenarios as a possible response. The author investigates the manifestation of multiple programmes, a leather workshop, bakery and bar within the South African urban context of Pretoria West. The architectural exploration aims to enrich public life in a liminal space on the periphery of the city. Challenges associated with the typology of duality are addressed through the integration with the immediate context to ensure its sustainability. The aim is to celebrate the edge condition and the spaces commonly overlooked.ArchitectureMArch(Prof)Unrestricte

The body that writes: Barthes, Lacan and the subject of writing

    No full text
Based on the return of the author to literary studies and taking the work of Roland Barthes and Jacques Lacan, in the coastal space where psychoanalysis and literature meet, we will go through the theme of the body in its relationship with writing. Since the act of writing, far from the utilitarian exercise of language, will be considered a movement to touch the future body of the reader, we will also approach, alongside a body that writes, the body that reads. It will be seen that writing, by weaving a body-language knot, appears as a distribution of the sensible, an experience, endowed with a unique politics.

    No full text
ENGLISH: The point of departure which forms the basis of this study, is the supposition that studies with respect to the Middle Dutch text The voyage of Saint Brendan have, up to the present, paid little attention to certain important themes. As a result of this void the underlying meaning of this text is difficult to access. The purpose of this investigation is therefore to fill these gaps which former studies of this text have not fully addressed, most particularly those in the South African edition by De Klerk&Schutte (1996). In chapter 1 the focus is on medieval views on rhetoric with the prologue and epilogue of The voyage of Saint Brendan as the source for closer investigation. The point of departure used in this chapter lies mainly with the world of the text (the textual world) and the world in front of the text (the world of the modem reader). To give relevance to this angle of incidence, an attempt is made to show a connection between medieval concepts of speech act theory and modem speech act concepts. With all these factors in mind, rhetoric as a manner of reader influence is researched and an investigation of reception is necessary to determine the possible audience of a text. In chapter 2 the focus falls on the presence of medieval symbolism and various intertexts present in The voyage of Saint Brendan. The point of departure used in this chapter lies mainly with the world behind the text (the world of the author) and the world of the text (the textual world). It has come to light that this particular text is permeated with Christian symbolism and intertexts which, in one way or another, reveal a connection with the Christian faith. The tenor of this text is rooted primarily in Christian symbolism but is also, in a secondary way, coupled with other types of symbolism like animal symbolism, plant symbolism, symbolism of belief (myths and legends), number symbolism and symbolism in nature (sun, moon, heat, cold, wind, water). Much of this symbolism overlaps and joins the many intertexts present which playa role in the development of the story. By presenting and interpreting the particular symbolism and intertexts, a richer meaning of this text is achieved. Chapter 3 and chapter 4 arise as a result of what was set out in chapter 2. In these two chapters certain important aspects not covered in chapter two are addressed. The focus is on the world behind the text (the world of the author) and the world of the text (the textual world). In chapter 3 an attempt is made to present the nature and role of the devil and hell in medieval times with The voyage of Saint Brendan as example. The conclusion is reached that the devil in this text is a personification of evil. A broadening of this paradigm is demonstrated which suggests that there is a movement away from simply a spiritual connotation of the devil to a physical personification. Further research is instituted into medieval ideas concerning the devil, punishment and the location of hell, hell as a tangible space, the personification of the devil and the doom of the sinner in hell-fire. In chapter 4 an attempt is made to show the nature and role of angels as messengers of God in medieval times with the The voyage of Saint Brendan as example. Many examples from this text suggest the role of angels as that of mediators between God and man. Further investigation is instituted regarding the different types of angels found in the text and the connection between angels and visions from a medieval tradition and perspective. The aspects of neutral and fallen angels, the concept of "seeing God" and the role of angels as companions of the soul on its way to heaven are demonstrated.Afrikaansunrestricte
