Taking Rustico Filippi’s sonnet Io fo ben boto a Dioas a point of departure, thisessay identifies the peculiarity of the thirteenth-century comic style in the closerelationship between literary texts and their readers in the age of the commune. This textual model became a point of reference in Florence due to Rustico’srhetorical ability and proved influential for Dante, Cavalcanti and the anony-mous author of Fior

Starting from the complex philological studies which analyzed the binary work of Rustico di Filippo, this paper examines the language of the poet trying to verify the thesis according to which to the thematic separation is related a different language. What became known through the analysis of the phonetical, morphological and lexical phenomena is that the linguistic basis in both the courtly and the burlesque part is the same, while the distinctness is just stylistic, due to a sophisticated usage of the lexicon. The result is that the two parts of corpus are fully complementary instead of being detached

Twin to twin transfusion syndrome presenting at early stages: is there still a possibile role for amnioreduction.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the rate of resolution or progression after first line treatment with amnioreduction and related outcome of pregnancies with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) diagnosed at stages I-II. METHOD: Data on 34 monochorionic diamniotic twin pregnancies presenting with TTTS at stage I-II before 26 weeks of gestation were collected retrospectively (1999-2006). All patients underwent at least one amnioreduction. The outcome and the results of neurological follow-up of surviving twins were analysed in relation to the regression or progression of the disease after treatment. RESULTS: Fourteen cases (41%) resolved after treatment while 18 cases (53%) progressed. In two patients immediate complications occurred within one week after amnioreduction; at least one infant survived in 85.3% of cases and there was double survival in 58.8%. Double survival was significantly better in cases that regressed (85.7%) compared with those cases that progressed (44.4%). None of the surviving infants in the group of cases with regression showed major neurological abnormalities. CONCLUSION: In our study, one-third of patients with stage I-II TTTS regressed after a single amnioreduction, and pregnancies with resolution of TTTS usually had a favourable outcome

Fetal size charts for the Italian population. Normative curves of head, abdomen and long bones.

Objective To describe size charts developed from fetuses of Italian couples. Method Prospective cross-sectional investigation conducted in three referral centers for prenatal diagnosis. The population of the study included fetuses between the 16th and the 40th week of gestation recruited prospectively and examined only once for the purpose of this study. Exclusion criteria comprised all maternal and/or fetal conditions possibly affecting fetal biometry. The following biometric variables were measured: biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur, tibia, humerus, ulna and radio length. The statistical procedure recommended for analyzing this type of data set was employed to derive normal ranges and percentiles. Birthweight was also recorded. Our centiles were then compared with results from other studies. Results The best-fitted regression model to describe the relationships between head circumference and abdominal circumference and gestational age was a cubic one, whereas a simple quadratic model fitted BPD, and length of long bones. Models fitting the SD were straight lines or quadratic curves. Neither the use of fractional polynomials (the greatest power of the polynomials being 3) nor the logarithmic transformation improved the fitting of the curves. Conclusion We have established size charts for fetuses from Italian couples using the recommended statistical approach. Since the mean birthweight in this study is not statistically different from the official birthweight reported for the Italian population, these reference intervals, developed according to the currently approved statistical methodology, can be employed during second- and third-trimester obstetric ultrasound of fetuses from Italian couples

3D active dynamic actuation model for offshore cranes

The handling of offshore payloads is a critical operation that presents numerous challenges, in particular related to the required precision in controlling their oscillations in a safe and accurate manner. The uncontrolled payload oscillations induced by the rolling movement of the vessel have been historically mitigated by the experience of on-deck operators by means of taglines. The availability of experienced personnel is not always present, and a manual control operation still presents inconsistent performances and a high risk for the safety of men and machines. This study presents a novel approach to an antisway control conceived to mitigate such problems and possibly to automate some of the operations concerning the payload sway control that are currently done manually. In particular, a system consisting of a translating trolley actuated through a proportional–integral–derivative controller is taken into consideration to mitigate the oscillations induced by the vessel's rolling and pitching motion onto a three-dimensional 8 degrees of freedom with double-pendulum model representing the hanging payload. The study is completed through an analysis aimed to characterize the bandwidth and frequency response of the controlled closed-loop system and highlight all the potential areas of interest for which further characterization is needed

The handling of offshore payloads is a critical operation that presents numerous challenges, in particular related to the required precision in controlling their oscillations in a safely and accurate manner. This study presents a preliminary approach to an anti-sway control conceived to mitigate such problems and possibly to automate some of the operations concerning the payload sway control that are currently done manually. In particular, a system consisting of a translating trolley actuated through a PID controller is taken into consideration to mitigate the oscillations induced by the vessel’s rolling motion onto a simplified two-dimensional and 4 degrees of freedom double-pendulum model representing the hanging payload. A three-dimensional double-pendulum model is also taken into account, in order to have a more representative case with respect to the two-dimensional one
