Keeping dairy cattle in the Gaza Strip: a case of study.

    No full text
Due to a protracted situation of conflict, the economy in the Gaza Strip has developed largely dependent on International humanitarian assistance. The isolation of markets, widespread unemployment, and the economic crisis have caused a serious decline in population living standards, with a high level of food insecurity. Recently the population in Gaza Strip has reached a 1.65 million in an area of only 360 km2 (PCBS, 2013). The rapid increase of the population (3,2% yearly growth rate), land scarcity and the challenge of food security have accelerated the phenomenon of urban agriculture. Currently, the majority of agricultural production of vegetables, fruits and livestock in Gaza is recognised as being from urban or peri-urban agriculture. In Gaza Strip, despite many constraints, agriculture and related activities are still offering the opportunity of food, income and employment for the local population. By presenting a study case related to an International project promoting the dairy cattle sector, we have investigated the humanitarian intervention in the Gaza Strip exploring key actions and related effects (technical, social and economic). We have also identified and investigated ways of breeding cattle and proposed a reflection on how developing the sector, focusing on main strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and constraints. In addition, we have explored the social and economic reasons for keeping dairy cattle, and analysed the related sustainability. Finally, we would like to propose what we have learned from this experience in order to help making future choice and contribute to the process of rural development supported by International cooperation

Social farming is an emerging practice at EU level and worldwide. It might be considered as the result of a process of social innovation, able to mobilize actors and resources for the provision of innovative services, but also to organize a diverse relationship among enterprises with public and third sectors. In Italy the concept is based on a deep subsidiarity communitarian model based on coproduction and civic economy. Here the transition process implies a long process of knowledge brokerage that might be sup-ported with innovative policy tools offered by the 2014/20 RDP. The paper analyses the process of Social Innovation in Social Farming in Tuscany in relation with the first application of the new rural policies. it offers new insights about the links among innovative process and the use of supportive tools

Social farming (SF) is an innovative concept belonging to a grey zone occupied by agriculture, social, education and health sectors. It involves various private and public actors who work together to co-create and share new collective knowledge. SF initiatives also involve many policies and tools that need to be reframed in order to facilitate the evaluation of these practices. Research in SF includes the active role of researchers in medium-term initiatives, involving a large number of stakeholders. Thus an evaluation of SF practices is crucial in developing and planning future actions. The complex nature of SF has led to the use of a transdisciplinary approach for the evaluation of its initiatives. This paper explains the transdisciplinary process used in a SF project, describes the nature of the collaborative relationships between researchers and others stakeholders, and examines the factors that inhibit and facilitate this collaboration. The paper highlights the important effects the transdisciplinary approach could have on the future of SF, in terms of network building, the co-production of knowledge, and the development of innovative practices
