Measuring financial well-being in Europe using a fuzzy set approach

Purpose – This paper aims to apply a multidimensional approach to assessing the financial well-being of European countries. Design/methodology/approach – Financial well-being is a very complex phenomenon to measure because it is composed of different dimensions. Therefore, this paper uses a multidimensional and fuzzy methodology to assess financial well-being in Europe. The financial well-being fuzzy indicator was calculated using European Quality of Life Survey data. Findings – Financial well-being is heterogeneous across European countries. This evidence is confirmed both at the level of overall financial well-being and at the level of sub-indices. The degree of financial wellbeing is not directly related to wealth as traditionally measured (i.e. GDP), but shows some correspondence with socio-economic characteristics of the population and with governance and cultural elements of a country. Practical implications – Understanding financial well-being could help financial institutions to transition from a one-size-fits-all approach to a more tailored approach when they provide financial services and could help policy makers to consider financial well-being when they decide how and where to allocate public spending. Originality/value – To the best of authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to employ a fuzzy methodology for the analysis of financial well-being in Europe. Banking Services for Outside Customers

    No full text
Over the last few years the Italian banking system has experienced a deep change due to a series of phenomena such as the strong increase of competition (Bank of Italy, 2007). Competition pressure has determined a new and customer oriented formulation of banking management paradigm (De Luca, 1996). In this scenario quality of banking services - i. e. the ability to satisfy customer’s financial needs and expectations – is considered a basic variable for competition (Gandolfi, 2002). The aim of this paper is to analyse the peculiarities of the Italian banking system in relation to outside target customers such as immigrants, temporary workers, housewives,...,banking literature identifies service offered to these type of customers as a possible way of differentiation in a highly competitive banking market (Anderloni, 2003; Omarini, 2006). What are the characteristics of banking (payment, lending and saving) services for this target? Which are the terms of these services? We analyse the supply of banks who adhere to Pattichiari

Financial Well-being (FW) is de ̄ned as an individual's perception of their ability to meet current and future ̄nancial obligations and expectations. This paper aims to extract rele vant topics from the existing literature on FW by applying text analysis to the documents extracted from the Scopus using the key search term \ ̄nancial well-being". A topic model based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation was then applied. The content of the topics was vi sualized by a word cloud and labeled. A narrative approach was used to provide an inter pretation for each topic. The study contributes to the literature on FW in several ways. First, the study raises awareness of the potential for text analysis to uncover previously unknown, high-quality information from large document collections within the ̄eld of FW. Second, this is the ̄rst paper to construct a topic modeling of the FW literature. Finally, the ̄ndings suggest the following main directions for future FW research: (i) extending the analysis to the countries, where FW is understudied; (ii) further analysis of the link between FW and other domains of well-being, between FW and its antecedents, between FW and `treatments' targeted at children and young people, between FW and sustainability; and (iii) a tailored approach to analyzing the resilience of vulnerable groups

Food-Tourism relationship in the Italian destinations

Food and tourism are two aspects for which Italy is famous all over the world, but today in a globalized and highly competitive tourist system in which even the stronger destinations need to differentiate themselves from the others, there is need policies of development capable of enhancing their interaction. Tourism promotion, for example, can focus on food products that may stimulate export demand, while food promotion may focus on the regional landscape and lead to a growth in tourism. Local food is a fundamental component of a destination’s attributes, adding to the range of attractions and the overall tourist experience (Symons, 1999). In an increasingly competitive world of tourism marketing, every region or destination is in a constant search for a unique product to differentiate itself from other destinations. In this paper, therefore, through the canonical correlation analysis (Hotelling, 1936), we want to examine, at regional level, the relationship between food and tourism in Italy, in the belief that their combination is the starting point not only for differentiating tourism destinations, but also for the use and conservation of food local production
