Uvod v branje Cankarjevih romanov
Branje desetih romanov Ivana Cankarja lahko olajšamo in poglobimo s poznavanjem pomembnih kategorij, ki sem jih analizirala v svoji študiji: nedokončna prebranost, individualizem in samota, podoba genija, filozofske in estetske prvine Cankarjeve romaneskne poetike. Povezanost individualizma in samote odkrije v Cankarjevih romanih (najbolj zgoščeno v Tujcih, Novem življenju in Milanu in Mileni) posebno različico, imenovano plemeniti individualizem, ki se v večini romanov preplete tudi z zahtevo po enakopravnosti in vnosu avtobiografskih prvin. Te so prisotne v vseh Cankarjevih romanih; največji delež pa je zaznamoval romane Tujci, Na klancu, Hiša Marije Pomočnice, Novo življenje, v katerih je nepremagljiva samota modernega človeka mestoma povezana tudi s podobo genija. Analizirane kategorije so izvirno ubesedene z različnimi filozofskimi in estetskimi prvinami: platonski dialog, zračnost filozofskega sistema, scenarizacija, lirizacija, esejizacija, satira in ironija. V avtorjevih romanih ne gre samo za širok razpon osrednjih tem, univerzalnih še danes, ampak tudi za slogovno nezamejenost in večpomensko stilizacijo, ki omogoča vedno nova branja

Reading the novels of Ivan Cankar can be made easier and more profound by knowing the important categories that I analysed in my study: unfinished reading, individualism and solitude, the image of genius, and the philosophical and aesthetic elements of Cankar’s novelistic poetics. The connection between individualism and solitude is revealed in Cankar’s novels (most notably in Tujci, Novo življenje and Milan in Milena) by a special kind of this called noble individualism, which in most novels is also intertwined with the demand for equality and the introduction of autobiographical elements. These are present in all of Cankar’s novels, but most often in Tujci, Na klancu, Hiša Marije Pomočnice, and Novo življenje, in which the invincible solitude of modern man is sometimes also connected with the image of genius. The categories analysed are expressed using various philosophical and aesthetic elements: Platonic dialogue, the lightness of the philosophical system, scenarization, lyricism, essayization, satire and irony. Margaret Laurence\u27s Manawaka cycle has several unifying features, one of them is the four elements theory. This pattern may not be deliberate, however, it is very well developed through all four novels: The Stone Angel represents earth, A Jest of God air, The Fire-Dwellers fire, and The Diviners represents water. Additionally,The Diviners reconciles all four elements. The main metaphor of water running both ways in this novel also offers a new interpretation of the occurrence of the water element in the other three novels as a metaphor for the progress of time and maturing.Cikel romanov Margaret Laurence združuje več lastnosti. Terry Pratchett: Transtekstualnost v seriji fantazijskih romanov Discworld
This master\u27s thesis analyses transtextuality—all relationships, either overt or concealed, between texts—within Terry Pratchett’s Discworld fantasy series. The series, consisting of over 40 novels, is known for its extensive web of references to literature, pop culture, mythology, religion, etc. These references are intricately integrated into Pratchett’s narratives through transtextual relationships, which form the central focus of this thesis. The thesis specifically examines the evolution of these relationships throughout the series, their role in constructing the unique fantasy universe of Discworld, and their impact on the reader’s experience. To address these questions, the author of this thesis conducts analyses of transtextual passages found in three Discworld novels, namely Wyrd Sisters, Carpe Jugulum, and Thud! The findings of these analyses reveal a progression in the complexity of the transtextual web underlying Pratchett’s novels. Furthermore, they demonstrate that transtextuality plays a vital role in character development and thematic depth, ultimately enhancing reader engagement and shaping readers’ experiences in various ways. In conclusion, transtextuality emerges as a crucial component of the Discworld series, serving not merely as a stylistic device but as one of the series’ foundational elements.Magistrsko delo analizira transtekstualnost, odnose med besedili, bodisi očitne ali skrite, znotraj serije fantazijskih romanov Discworld, ki jo je napisal angleški pisatelj Sir Terence David John Pratchett, bolj znan pod imenom Terry Pratchett. Serija, ki obsega več kot 40 romanov, je znana po svoji obsežni mreži literarnih, kulturnih, mitoloških, religioznih in drugih referenc. Vse našteto je pisatelj v svoje pripovedi vpeljal s pomočjo transtekstualnih odnosov, prav ti pa predstavljajo osrednji del raziskave te naloge. Nadaljnje naloga poskuša začrtati razvoj transtekstualnih elementov skozi serijo, opredeliti njihovo vlogo pri gradnji edinstvenega fantazijskega sveta, kot je Discworld, ter ugotoviti, kako transtekstualnost oblikuje bralno izkušnjo. Da bi odgovorila na vsa ta vprašanja, avtorica te naloge analizira nabor transtekstualnih odlomkov, najdenih v treh Discworld romanih, in sicer v »Wyrd Sisters«, »Carpe Jugulum« in »Thud!«. Ugotovitve analiz razkrivajo stopnjevanje v kompleksnosti transtekstualne mreže, ki se skriva pod površino Prachettovih romanov. Poleg tega dokazujejo tudi, da ima transtekstualnost ključno vlogo pri razvoju likov in razširitvi tematske globine, kar povečuje angažiranost bralcev in na različne načinov oblikuje njihovo bralno izkušnjo. Prevajalski tok arabskih romanov v angleščino skozi čas
The discipline of Translation Studies has been criticized for being limited to only Euro-American perspectives and cultures, and thus scholars have called for expanding the scope of study beyond the Western conceptualizations of translation. This paper attempts to fill that void in the knowledge of the translation archaeology of Arabic novels translated into English. It creates an up-to-date bibliography of Arabic novels translated into English published worldwide across three decades (1988–2018) by consulting the US Library of Congress global union library catalogue and Goodreads. The collected materials are presented across two major historical periods: the post-Nobel Prize phase (1988–August 2001) and the post-9/11 phase (September 2001–2018). The bibliography includes 277 translated Arabic novels. It identifies the main actors involved in the process of translation, namely the authors, translators, and publishers. In addition to the quantitative analysis of this bibliographical data, this study adopts a comprehensive model by Allen (1995) to apply qualitative analysis to identify the topics being selected for translation into English. The study reveals that an increase in the number of translated works does not necessarily correlate with a greater understanding of the source text culture. In fact, increased translation flows can signal a reinforcement of known cultural stereotypes in the target culture.Prevodoslovje je doživelo kritiko, da se omejuje le na evro-ameriške perspektive in kulture. Zato so novejši prevodoslovci oz. prevodslovke pozvali k razširitvi obsega študija onkraj zahodnih konceptualizacij prevajanja. Ta članek poskuša zapolniti to praznino na področju poznavanja prevodne arheologije arabskih romanov, ki so bili prevedeni v angleščino. Avtorici sta izoblikovali posodobljeno bibliografijo arabskih romanov, prevedenih v angleščino, ki so bili objavljeni po vsem svetu v treh desetletjih (1988–2018) s pomočjo globalnega knjižničnega kataloga Kongresne knjižnice ZDA in baze Goodreads. Zbrano gradivo je predstavljeno v dveh velikih zgodovinskih obdobjih: obdobje po Nobelovi nagradi (1988–avgust 2001) in obdobje po 11. septembru (september 2001–2018). Bibliografija obsega 277 prevedenih arabskih romanov. Avtorici identificirata glavne akterje, ki sodelujejo v procesu prevajanja: avtorje, prevajalce in založnike. Poleg kvantitativne analize bibliografskih podatkov ta študija uporablja Allenov celovit model (1995) za obravnavo kvalitativne analize oz. za identifikacijo tem, ki so bile izbrane za prevod v angleščino. Študija razkriva, da povečanje števila prevedenih del ni nujno povezano z večjim razumevanjem kulture izvirnega besedila. Approaches for Representing Software as Graphs for Machine Learning Applications
Machine learning (ML) is making its way into the source code analysis. Most of the time, this happens with the help of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. However, NLP techniques often represent their input as a sequence of tokens. This assumption is reasonable when processing text because the words related to the same object usually follow each other. However, in source code, this assumption can be inadequate simply because of the source code execution nature. Graphs can be much more adequate for representing source code. They can capture the dependency structure of a program. Due to the recent advances in the area of machine learning on graphs, researchers started to explore the graph-based representation of software in the scope of machine learning applications. There is no single way to represent a program in the form of a graph. For this reason, researchers explored different alternatives, such as function call graphs (FCG), data flow graphs (DFG), control flow graphs (CFG), or their mixtures. Representing Programs with Dependency and Function Call Graphs for Learning Hierarchical Embeddings
Any source code can be represented as a graph. This kind of representation allows capturing the interaction
between the elements of a program, such as functions, variables, etc. Modeling these interactions can enable
us to infer the purpose of a code snippet, a function, or even an entire program. Lately, more and more
work appear, where source code is represented in the form of a graph. One of the difficulties in evaluating the
usefulness of such representation is the lack of a proper dataset and an evaluation metric. Our contribution is in
preparing a dataset that represents programs written in Python and Java source codes in the form of dependency
and function call graphs. In this dataset, multiple projects are analyzed and united into a single graph. The
nodes of the graph represent the functions, variables, classes, methods, interfaces, etc. Nodes for functions
carry information about how these functions are constructed internally, and where they are called from. Such
graphs enable training hierarchical vector representations for source code. Moreover, some functions come
with textual descriptions (docstrings), which allows learning useful tasks such as API search and generation
of documentation
Predicting Type Annotations for Python using Embeddings from Graph Neural Networks
An intelligent tool for type annotations in Python would increase the productivity of developers. Python is
a dynamic programming language, and predicting types using static analysis is difficult. Existing techniques
for type prediction use deep learning models originated in the area of Natural Language Processing. These
models depend on the quality of embeddings for source code tokens. We compared approaches for pre-
training embeddings for source code. Specifically, we compared FastText embeddings to embeddings trained
with Graph Neural Networks (GNN). Our experiments showed that GNN embeddings outperformed FastText
embeddings on the task of type prediction. Moreover, they seem to encode complementary information since
the prediction quality increases when both types of embeddings are use
