The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function

    No full text
This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author

Analysis of the expression of S alleles in "Rocha" pear

    No full text
Analysis of the expression of S alleles in ‘Rocha’ pear. In this work, the expression of incompatibility genes (S-alleles) in ‘Rocha’ pear was investigated. The comparison of these alleles with the alleles of other cultivars may constitute a tool to help the technicians and farmers to choose pollinators when planning a new ‘Rocha’ orchard. We have used molecular techniques that include pistil RNA extraction from three clones of cultivar ‘Rocha’ (R1, R2 and R4C), fragment amplification by RT-PCR, cloning and sequencing. The flowers utilized to extract RNA were isolated before anthesis to guarantee the absence of pollen from other cultivars in their pistils, which could interfere with the rejection process of the auto-pollen. Analysing the genetic sequences obtained from the three clones, no differences between clones were detectable and the sequences corresponded to Sj and Sa alleles. ‘Rocha’ pear is semicompatible with cultivars which do not present Sj or Sa, totally incompatible with cultivars that carry Sj and Sa, and totally compatible with cultivars that do not carry Sj and Sa

Language Change and SA-OT: The case of sentential negation

Simulated Annealing for Optimality Theory (SA-OT) updates Optimality Theory by adding a model of performance to a theory of linguistic competence. Our aim is to show that SA-OT can contribute to language change simulations. Performance "errors" are considered to be one of the causes of variation and change. We have chosen to model the evolution of sentential negation (SN). The descriptive background adopts Jespersen's Cycle, according to which the evolution of sentential negation follows three main stages (1. pre-verbal, 2. discontinuous, and 3. post-verbal). Therefore, we advance a novel model for SN, based on SA-OT. It reproduces the three pure and the two observed mixed stages, whereas it correctly predicts the lack of an intermediate stage between 3 and 1. The success of the approach corroborates the computational, performance-based approach to the data. Finally, we employ the iterated learning paradigm to reproduce historical changes in a "simulated corpus study". This enterprise turns out to be more difficult than one would naively believe.Appeared open access as: Computational Linguistics in the Netherlands Journal (CLIN), vol. 1 (2011), pp. 21-40, and is available at http://www.clinjournal.org/sites/default/files/Lopopolo.pdfA. Organic agriculture together with sustainable management systems are growing in the world due to concerns about the environment and the health of the populace: being real and exhaustively documented the damages caused by pesticides. The aim of this work was to observe the possible differences in the concentrations of free radical scavengers and substances recently classified as functional, in different beet parts cultivated following organic and conventional procedures. Regarding the total antioxidant activity (AA%), significant differences were not observed between the two cultivation procedures, being found a high AA% in every beet part analyzed. Organic plants concentrated higher vitamin C content (6.7 - 16.6 mg/100 g) with respect to the conventional ones (4.1 - 9.1 mg/100 g); higher flavonoid content (0.5 - 5.2 mg rutin/ g) and, when cooked, the pulp of organic beet maintained a higher polyamine content and higher amount of total carotenoids. No significant differences were observed for total phenolic compounds

This article focuses on the way in which Brazilian filmmaker Glauber Rocha develops his political intervention, between 1963 and 1979, conceiving his films as historical allegories. His cinema performs a dramatic condensation of the plot, punctuated by an epic commentary in voice over which de-naturalizes gestures and speeches, producing a strong effect of theatricality (Sarrazac). In 1964, he assumed the Christian figural allegory (Auerbach) as a formal pattern to recapitulate the peasant struggles which took place from 1889 to 1940 (Black God White Devil); in 1967, he took the baroque drama (Walter Benjamin) to transfigure his generation’s traumatic experience of the 1964 coup d’état (Land in Anguish); in 1979, he built a deconstructive allegory in his fresco of Brazilian life that gives a picture of what he saw as the “crisis of history” at those times (The Age of the Earth). A central leader of Cinema Novo, Rocha assumed the position of an author who embraced political struggle, but never renouncing his most profound aesthetic concerns in his dialogue with his contemporaries, like Godard and Pasolini. The Italian filmmaker has been perhaps his closest partner in his search for a political aesthetics inspired by Marxist thought but articulated with a movement towards a re-enchantment of the world in opposition to bourgeois rationality

This is a qualitative, transversal and exploratory study. Data collection was performed from August to October 2016 in eight primary health care units: 1 traditional Basic Health service and 7 services with Family Health Teams (ESF). Research participants were 16 professionals: four physicians, five community health agents and seven nurses. The tool was semi-structured interviews, with a pre-elaborated script by researchers, which addressed issues related to work processes to mental health care. The interviews lasted approximately 40 minutes, which were recorded and transcribed. For data analysis, Thematic Analysis technique was chosen, according to Braun and Clarke. This research presents two articles. The first one aims to analyze the work processes in mental health from the perspective of the professionals of Primary Health Care of Porto Alegre, establishing similarities and differences in practices developed according to the mode of Matrix Support. Results show that the services with matrix support from Family Health Support Center demonstrated greater participation and integration of primary health care teams in mental health practices, and consequently, greater effectiveness and resilience of mental health care for users. The second article aims to analyze the conceptions and meanings attributed to mental health by professionals of primary care. Results show that the perspectives about the concept of mental health approach to the expanded understanding of health. This refers to a shift in the paradigm of mental health, which shows an advance towards an extended meaning of the concept, which reverberates in the consideration of social determinants of health.
