On the formation of bromate and chlorate ions during electrolysis with boron doped diamond anode for seawater treatment
No full textThe electrochemical treatment of brackish and seawaters with boron doped diamond anodes (BDD) can be particularly suitable for the removal of microorganisms, microalgae and pollutants: the high conductivity of these waters and the high content of chloride ions can be exploited in disinfection/oxidation processes mediated by active chlorine. A correct choice of operating conditions can limit the formation of such undesired by-products as bromate and chlorate ions. RESULTS: Galvanostatic electrolyses of synthetic waters containing chloride and/or bromide ions using BDD anode were carried out both in batch and continuous mode in an undivided cell. Bromide ions were oxidized to form bromate ions with high conversion rate, while chlorate ions were found as by-products of the oxidation of chloride ions together with active chlorine. When solutions containing Br- and Cl- were treated, the increase in the concentration of chloride up to that of seawater (20 g dm-3), hinders the formation of BrO3 - and ClO3 -. CONCLUSIONS: The electrochemical process with BDD anode could be applicable to the disinfection of high salinity waters: in synthetic solution simulating the composition of seawaters, high amounts of active chlorine are formed and the occurrence of bromates and chlorates is highly limited
Coating of gold substrates with polyaniline through ectrografting of aryl diazonium salts
No full textThe results of an experimental study on electrochemical preparation of polyaniline (PANI)/polycrystalline gold composites are reported in this work. A three steps approach is adopted in order to obtain a stable and uniform coating: (I) functionalization of the gold surface by 4-nitrophenyl group, (2) electrochemical reduction of the nitro group to amine, and (3) electropolymerization of aniline onto the surface of the aminophenyl-modified gold electrode. Cyclic voltammetries and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies are used to characterize the gold surface after each step. Also the results of a sample prepared by electropolymerization of PANI on bare gold are presented as a comparison

The Introduction analyses how Weil's concept of superposed reading provides a new method of approaching both O'Connor, her writings, and O'Connor
studies, and focuses on how such apparently different women interconnect. Chapter One explores how both Weil and O'Connor attempt to write their theologies on the
souls of their readers yet are each subject to constraints imposed by form. Weil's concept of locating equilibrium between incommensurates is discussed, and her
distinctively philosophical approach to fictions and fictionality is used to investigate O'Connor's notion of prophetic fictions and the writer's role. Chapter Two assesses how both writers revivify Christian paradoxes. Weil's monstrous concept of affiiction, and O'Connor's use of the grotesque genre to jolt secular man into an
awareness of the sacred are scrutinised. Chapter Three studies how both writers consider an encounter between God and man is possible through the action of grace. My Conclusion interrogates how Weil's work can deepen our understanding of O'Connor's writings, and examines how successful O'Connor is at realising a truly
Christian literature. I conclude that despite being a writer of powerful fictions, O'Connor can not be totally successful in her mission as writer-prophet because
ultimately fiction escapes orthodoxy
