Reynolds pressure and relaxation in a sheared granular system
No full textWe describe experiments that probe the evolution of shear jammed states, occurring for packing fractions pS≤p≤pJ, for frictional granular disks, where above pJ there are no stress-free static states. We use a novel shear apparatus that avoids the formation of inhomogeneities known as shear bands. This fixed p system exhibits coupling between the shear strain, γ, and the pressure, P, which we characterize by the "Reynolds pressure" and a "Reynolds coefficient," R(p)=(∂2P/∂γ2)/2. R depends only on p and diverges as R∼(pc-p) α, where pcpJ and α-3.3. Under cyclic shear, this system evolves logarithmically slowly towards limit cycle dynamics, which we characterize in terms of pressure relaxation at cycle n: ΔP-βln(n/n0). β depends only on the shear cycle amplitude, suggesting an activated process where β plays a temperaturelike role
Socioeconomic status and anxiety as predictors of antidepressant treatment response and suicidal ideation in older adults.
No full textBACKGROUND: Separate reports from the maintenance treatment for late-life depression (MTLD) trials have shown that low socioeconomic status (SES) and anxiety symptoms at the time of treatment initiation predict lower levels of response to antidepressant treatment and higher levels of suicidal ideation in older adults. AIM: To determine whether SES and anxiety independently contribute to worse treatment outcomes, as indicated by persistence of depressive symptoms during treatment and the persistence of suicidal ideation. Consistent with prior evidence that sociodemographic factors and clinical history are both prognostic of depression treatment efficacy, we hypothesized that SES and pre-existing anxiety symptoms will both predict lower levels of response to treatment and higher levels of suicidal ideation. METHOD: Secondary analyses of data from the MTLD trials. RESULTS: Regression analyses which controlled for comorbid anxiety indicated that residents of middle- and high-income census tracts were more likely to respond to treatment (HR, 1.63; 95%CI, 1.08-2.46) and less likely to report suicidal ideation during treatment (OR, 0.51; 95%CI, 0.28-0.90) than residents of low income census tracts. The same regression models indicated that pre-existing anxiety symptoms were independently related to lower treatment response (HR, 0.73; 95%CI, 0.60-0.89) and higher risk of suicidal ideation (OR, 1.45; 95%CI, 0.98-2.14). CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate the importance of treating anxiety symptoms during the course of treatment for late-life depression and, at the same time, addressing barriers to treatment response related to low SES

A 0.7-V 0.43-pJ/cycle Wakeup Timer based on a Bang-bang Digital-Intensive frequency-Locked-Loop for IoT Applications
No full textA 40-nm CMOS wakeup timer employing a bang-bang digital-intensive frequency-locked loop for Internet-of-Things applications is presented. A self-biased ΣΔ digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) is locked to an RC time constant via a single-bit chopped comparator and a digital loop filter. Such highly digitized architecture fully exploits the advantages of advanced CMOS processes, thus enabling operation down to 0.7 V and a small area (0.07 mm 2 ). Most circuitry operates at 32× lower frequency than the DCO in order to reduce the total power consumption down to 181 nW. High frequency accuracy and a 10× enhancement of long-term stability is achieved by the adoption of chopping to reduce the effect of comparator offset and 1/f noise and by the use of ΣΔ modulation to improve the DCO resolution. The proposed timer achieves the best energy efficiency (0.43 pJ/cycle at 417 kHz) over prior art while keeping excellent on-par long-term stability (Allan deviation floor <;20 ppm) and temperature stability (106 ppm/°C).Accepted Author Manuscript(OLD)Applied Quantum Architecture
