    Hazard assessment of the stability of cavern roof along the coastline

    This work concerns the study performed for the interpretation of the potential failure mechanism of a large natural cavern, which is located along the rocky cliffs of Polignano a Mare town (Apulia, Southern Italy) under an intensely urbanised area. This cavern, which is located at the sea level, was formed due to an intense process of salt and wave erosion, mainly acting during sea storms, within a rock mass formed of a lower stratified limestone mass and an upper soft calcarenite mass. Therefore, the influence of the climatic factors and of the upward erosion process within the cavern has been specifically investigated. At present, the thickness of the cave roof, which has a dome shape, is less than 10 metres in the centre and several buildings are founded on the ground surface above. In 2006 a large calcarenite block, of about 1.5 m diameter, fell down from the roof of the cavern and afterwards field and laboratory investigations as well as both simple analytical methods and elasto-plastic numerical modelling were carried out in order to assess the current state of the roof and to interpret the effects of the potential evolution of the inner erosion and of the local failure processes of the cave. As such, a detailed geo-structural survey has firstly been carried out, together with laboratory and in-situ testing for the geomechanical characterisation of the rock materials and of the corresponding joints. An analysis of the sea storms occurred within the observation period has also been performed by considering daily rainfall and wind data. The rate of erosion has been measured by means of special nets installed at the sea level to collect the material falling down from the roof and the corresponding measurements, which lasted for about one year, indicate an erosion rate of at least 0.005 m3/month. A structural monitoring system, including extensometers and joint-meters, was also installed in several points of the cave in order to measure eventual block displacements within the cavern and the results show some correlations of the logged data with the occurrence of sea storms and in general with the weather factors. The results of both simplified analytical methods and numerical analysis show that the cave is at present stable. Also, numerical modelling was aimed at defining the conditions under which general failure of the cave might occur. In particular, sensitivity analyses have been carried out to assess the influence of specific factors, as the progressive reduction of the roof thickness due to erosion or the gradual reduction of the strength properties of the calcarenite due to weathering processes

    Environmental and economic sustainability of the quarries system in the Metropolitan Area of Bari

    The case study is the Metropolitan Area of Bari, one of the metropolitan cities indicated by the reform of the italian provinces, as planned by Law nr. 56 of 7th of April 2014 “Dispositions on the metropolitan cities, provinces and unions or fusions of municipalities (Legge Delrio)”, that imagines, for ten metropolitan cities in Italy, the construction of an administrative and institutional process that could innovate the metropolitan territories with a strategic development approach. The new “Territorial Authorities of the wide areas” will need to take and actualize the Strategic Metropolitan Plan with a territorial planning looking more closely at infrastructures, coordinated management of the public services, development of mobility and viability systems and structures, coordination of urban planning, promotion of economic and social development, strenghtening the information and digital systems. The Metropolitan City of Bari is a wide area with a strong polycentric weave constituted by 41 municipalities, some of them having a significant dimension, placed around the regional capital and organized in two coronas supplementary to the open spaces of the country side, sometimes compromised with a situation of sprawl and land consumption, due to the tendence of the urban center to join together

    La carta giacimentologica del Piano Regionale delle Attività estrattive della Puglia

    La gestione dell’attività estrattiva deve tenere conto del bilancio tra aspetto economico e disponibilità delle riserve ed anche del rapporto tra crescita economica e rischio ambientale indotto dall’attività estrattiva. La gestione prudente e assennata (più di quanto non sia stato fatto in passato) deve essere fondata sulla conoscenza completa di tutti i fattori coinvolti. Uno degli elementi fondamentali per una corretta e funzionale gestione delle attività estrattive è la realizzazione della carta giacimentologica che si propone come strumento moderno di consultazione per tutti gli operatori economici del settore interessati ad ottimizzare gli investimenti. La Carta giacimentologica della Regione Puglia come aggiornamento al Piano Regionale delle Attività Estrattive (P.R.A.E) è stata realizzata dai ricercatori del Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile ed Ambientale (sezione di Ingegneria geotecnica e geoambientale) in virtù di una convenzione stipulata tra il Politecnico di Bari e l’Assessorato all’Ecologia (Servizio estrattivo) della Regione Puglia. Nella carta giacimentologica proposta sono individuate le aree suscettibili di attività estrattiva, non sottostanti a vincoli o a condizionamenti ostativi all'attività stessa. La realizzazione di uno strumento chiaro e condiviso costituisce l’occasione anche per semplificare i tempi di approvazione dei progetti oggi ancora estremamente dilatati.All the aspects regarding the mining industrial sector are based on the balance between the economical and the environmental impacts. Actually the wise management of the mining activity need to be founded on the clear knowledge of all the involved factors. One of the main elements and the most useful tool for the mining activity management is represented by the mining resources map, as a modern reference tool for who wants to engage in mining activity. The mining resources map of the Apulia region (Southern Italy) was developed for the Regional Program of the mining activity by a research team of the Technical University of Bari (Geothecnical and Environmental Department), according with the Mining sector of the regional government. The map was developed on a geographic information system support by implementing different thematic maps of the region on overlaying layers, in order to define leaning areas for mining activity, not subjected to restriction for the environmental protection. The final product represents a clear and easy to use support to the decision making for mining activity planning

    Analisi delle modificazioni al territorio connesse ai siti inquinati in territori urbani (brownfields): il caso dell’ex-Fibroniti di Bari

    Con il termine “brownfields” si indicano una serie di aree industriali dismesse, ubicate in zone centrali di centri urbani, abbandonate dall’evoluzione tecnologica ed economica della produzione, sulle quali spesso grava una realtà di degrado accompagnato quasi sempre da diffuso inquinamento. Lo stabilimento ex-Fibronit ha rappresentato nei 50 anni di attività (1935- 1985) una delle maggiori realtà del Paese per la produzione di cemento-amianto. Il complesso delle ex Officine Fibronit insiste su una superficie di circa 9 ettari che oggi, a seguito dell’espansione urbana degli anni ‘60 e ’70 della città di Bari, si trova all’interno di un’area della città a vocazione residenziale, densamente popolata. Allo stato attuale degrado ed abbandono più che decennale caratterizzano l’area. Nel presente lavoro vengono illustrati i risultati dell’analisi delle modificazioni indotte al territorio dall’insediamento e dalle attività dello stabilimento ex- Fibronit. Quello di Bari, purtroppo, non è un caso isolato; in tutto il Paese, infatti, i “brownfields” rappresentano la più pesante eredità del processo di industrializzazione stesso e di un passato produttivo non più sostenibile.The term `brownfield site' means real property, located in central areas of the cities, the redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. The ex –Fibronit site, on active service for 50 years (1935- 1985), has been one of the biggest factories in the Country for asbestos-cement manufactures. Following the growth of the city of Bari in the years ’60-’70, the plant, nowadays, lies in a area of about 9 hectares surrounded by crowded quarters. Actually a ten- year decay and the abandonment of the property are the characteristics of this area. This paper shows the analysis of the changes triggered on territory by the activities of the ex- Fibronit factory. Unfortunately this is not an isolated case; all over the Country the brownfields are the heaviest heritage of the industrialization process and of a industry yielding no longer sustainabl
