The paper explains a research activity conducted by UdR Interni of the Indaco Department of the Polytechnic of Milan, following the objective of outlining plans for an innovative "City of Youth", in which the reconfiguration of abandoned places could be addressed – designing appropriate interior spaces able to prefigure the directions of their use and able to provide unique dynamic of meaning. The additional challenge consistes in generating a value of urban renewal for the entire city

The practice of Adaptive Reuse is often related to a profound socio-economic shift; specifically, it implies the abandonment or decommissioning of an industrial, economic or social system, and its relative structures, and is often concerned with the experimentation of a new model. Emerging countries are of particular note because they are required to tackle this profound change which needs tangible space and energies. Adaptive reuse is therefore crucial, enabling them to exploit existing structures while preserving historical heritage. Re-use and re-adaptation are, indeed, common practices that have a historical background seen throughout human history; nevertheless, during recent decades, this sensitive design approach has also been characterized by an advanced neo-sustainability related to the environment in general. This trend is part of a widespread interest in exploitation of existing resources, represented by the concept of Restoration Economy

GIDE (Group for International Design Education) is an international consortium of higher education design schools, which promote the exchange of design education with an ethical dimension; exploring multidisciplinary and intercultural experiences; working practices and competences across the European Union and beyond. The group consists on 7 main partner colleges and schools in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. This book introduces, in the first part, the theoretical contributions of the design schools involved on "Design for innovative communities" topic and in the second part, the results of the project developed in the fall semester of 2009/10 academic year by each participant. Teachers and students from several European countries investigate a common theme, sharing experiences, cultures, design capabilities. The different approaches to project design and the different aspects of the discipline of the participating schools, will help to make this work an interesting opportunity to question the role that the design of spaces and 3D design have in the development of new reference scenarios of contemporary living

GIDE (Group for International Design Education) is an international consortium oh higher education design schools, which promote the exchange of design education with an ethical dimension, exploring multidisciplinary and inter-cultural experiences, working practices and competences across the European Union and beyond. The group consist of 7 main partner colleges and schools in Belgium, England, Germany, Italy, Scotland, Slovenia, Switzerland. “Creativity for local enterprises” is about work and essay deveoped by the GIDE membering during the academic year 2011/12. Partner schools worked for one semester on this topic with Interior and Product Design students to explore innovate solutions to relate the local enterprise reality withthe design item. Instructors and students investigated a common theme, sharing experiences, cultures, approaches and design skills. Results underline the key role of spatial and industrial design in development of new scenarios for contemporary living.
