Bates (Samuel P.) Collection on Rudy Vallée, 1914-1990
Rudy Vallée was one of the most popular vocalists of the pre-swing era. With his megaphone and nasal voice, he will forever be remembered as the archetypal image of the early crooners. Born in Island Pond, Vermont, in 1901, Hubert Prior Vallée grew up in Westbrook, Maine, and earned the nickname \u27Rudy\u27 in college for his love of saxophone player, Rudy Wiedeoft.
Samuel P. Bates and his wife Shirlee were friends with Rudy Vallée and his wife Eleanor. While it\u27s unknown how the couples came to know each other, it is possible Sam and Rudy met at 3M while Rudy was featured in some advertisements. A U.S. Army veteran, Samuel P. Bates enlisted in August 1952 in Pittsburgh and was discharged in August 1954 in Ft. Eustis, Va. Sam worked for 3M for 36 years, the last 16 years as director of public relations for 3M International and traveled to more than 60 countries and six continents.
This collection includes memorabilia, recordings, correspondence, and photographs documenting the relationship between Samuel P. Bates and his family with Rudy Vallée and his wife Eleanor.https://digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu/findingaids/1413/thumbnail.jp
Sewing the Body of Christ : Eucharist wafer souvenirs stitched into fifteenth-century manuscripts, primarily in the Netherlands
Books of hours in the fifteenth century occupied several social and devotional roles. People used them to store small objects, including metal badges. Although the cultural practice of sewing in badges was widespread in the late Middle Ages, nearly all of the badges were removed (by later collectors). This article examines the practice by considering needle holes and offsets in the soft parchment, which indicate the shape of the badges and where they were attached. Noting that vast majority of metal offsets in books of hours are round, the author posits that these were not impressed by pilgrims’ badges, as is often repeated in the scholarly literature, but rather by tokens that commemorate having taken the Eucharist. The round badges are the same size and shape and bear the same imagery as host wafers. Owners stitched such badges into their books’ margins at locations relevant to Eucharistic piety. When they were sewn into books, Eucharist badges reconfigured the book as a shrine that recorded a votary’s pursuit of Communion.Peer reviewe
De logologische ruimte
Rudy Kousbroek opens one of his essays in The Logological Space with the following sentence: "Like someone who is of unsound mind, I actually constantly want to be entertained". These brilliant essays on language let the reader fully share in Kousbroek's need for entertainment. In addition this book contains essays on anagrams, palindromes, literal Dutch to English translations, word play and spelling, quotes, as well as documents on the language world of such diverse writers as Cyra McFadden, Amanda Rose and Raymond Queneau. (Logology is the study of words with an emphasis on letter patterns, often as part of recreational word play such as anagrams, palindromes and isograms, rather than on meaning
Rudy Vallée Tribute Committee (University of Maine) Records
The Rudy Vallée Tribute Committee was formed to plan University of Maine tributes to Rudy Vallee, including a book and program. The Committee also considered how best to manage the University of Maine\u27s Stein Collection . The tribute was held on Saturday, April 23, 1988 at the Maine Center for the Arts.
Committee meeting minutes and correspondence regarding the organization of the tribute and communications with the Vallée family, draft tribute programs, biographical profiles of Vallée, press releases regarding the tribute and Vallée in general, posters and invitations for the tribute, and photographs from the event. Files of David C. Smith, a professor of history at the university and chair of the committee, are also included.https://digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu/findingaids/1410/thumbnail.jp

Quantum Network Coding
Since quantum information is continuous, its handling is sometimes
surprisingly harder than the classical counterpart. A typical
example is cloning; making a copy of digital information is
straightforward but it is not possible exactly for quantum
information. The question in this paper is whether or not {em
quantum} network coding is possible. Its classical counterpart is
another good example to show that digital information flow can be done
much more efficiently than conventional (say, liquid) flow.
Our answer to the question is similar to the case of cloning, namely,
it is shown that quantum network coding is possible if approximation
is allowed, by using a simple network model called Butterfly. In this
network, there are two flow paths, to and to ,
which shares a single bottleneck channel of capacity one. In the
classical case, we can send two bits simultaneously, one for each
path, in spite of the bottleneck. Our results for quantum network
coding include: (i) We can send any quantum state
from to and from to
simultaneously with a fidelity strictly greater than . (ii) If
one of and is classical, then the
fidelity can be improved to . (iii) Similar improvement is also
possible if and are restricted to
only a finite number of (previously known) states. (iv) Several
impossibility results including the general upper bound of the fidelity
are also given
