L’olio in un aneddoto dalle biografie di Cesare (Plut. Caes. 17, 9–10 e Suet. Iul. 53)

    No full text
The paper discusses a debated anecdote on Julius Caesar that Plutarch and Suetonius probably derived from the writer and politician Gaius Oppius. By examining some hitherto neglected Latin agronomic and gastronomic sources, the author provides some examples of olea condita used for culinary purposes and reassesses the interpretation of the anecdote

Nell’officina del falsario : ancora sul commento pseudogalenico al De alimento

    No full text
The commentary on De alimento, published in 1576 in the Giunta edition of Galen’s works edited by Girolamo Mercuriale, has been acknowledged by scholars as a forgery by Giovan Battista Rasario, a well-known physician and Greek scholar who had previously edited a Latin edition of Galen (Venice, 1562-1563). This contribution aims to describe and analyse a large specimen of the text edited by Rasario (commentary on ch. 17 of De alimento), pointing out some of the sources used for the forgery and proposing some reflections on the method of composition of the text

Come si costruisce un corpus: il caso di Galeno

    No full text
The paper gives a comprehensive view of the main issues concerning the complex and long-lasting process of composition of Galen’s works. Through the analysis of some passages of the so-called autobibliographical writings, and other selected texts, the author aims at showing that Galen’s project of organizing his own books in a corpus was conceived at a relatively early age, and was carried on until his last days : Galen’s main goal was to preserve the integrity and authorship of his writings and secondly, to build a cursus studiorum of medicine completely based on his own books. This forms, together with autobiography, an integral part of Galen’s strategy of self-representation, oriented to the construction of a monumentum entrusted to posterity

    Medicina e vegetarianismo in Plutarco

    No full text
Vegetarianism is one of the most struggling subjects in the field of Plutarchean studies. The paper aims at throwing light on the relationship between Plutarch's views on vegetarianism and some medical aspects he relies upon to support his attacks against eating meat. Plutarch mainly stresses his attention on human physiology, which is -according to his views- designed for a diet based on vegetables and fruits: that is why the first men on Earth used to be vegetarian; and, by the way, this is the reason why eating meat causes many different diseases, both physical and psychological. Moreover, by commenting some sections of the "De esu carnium", and comparing them with several passages from the "Moralia", the author shows that Plutarch used the same set of medical argumentations to defend vegetarianism throughout his vaste corpus

Una nota testuale al Commento ad Epidemie VI di Galeno (Gal. in Hipp. Epidemiarum VI comm. 304-305 W.-Pf.)

"This contribution deals with a textual problem in the greek tradition of Galen's Commentaria in Hìppocratis Epidemiarum librum VI (304, 13-306, 19 Wenkebach-Pfaff). With the support of the arabic translation of IXth century by Hunain ibn Ishaq, and considering Galen's usus scrìbendi, the author tries to reconstruct a better text, supposing the existence of a lacuna in the greek textual tradition of the Marcianus Venetus 283 manuscript, together with a significant interpolation due to an error made by the copyist.

Plutarco e non Plutarco: sul frammento 81 Sandbach

    No full text
This paper deals with fragment 81 of the Plutarch’s Commentarium in Hesiodi Opera et dies, which is lost in direct tradition. The Author argues that the fragment cannot possibly be the work of Plutarch alone: the technical flair of the mathematical description devoted to the multifaceted problem of the wine/water ratio is solid evidence against Plutarch’s authorship.

Il medico "mago" e il suo pubblico: Galeno tra prognosi e divinazione

    No full text
The paper aims, at first, to provide a synoptical view on the practice of prognosis, and on its methodological status, according to Galen's works. Then the author, analyzing a selection of texts coming from the galenic corpus, tries to throw light on Galen's point of view about the relationship between prognosis and divination. Both these technai aim at forecasting the future but, according to Galen, only one of them -prognosis, of course- is able to provide accurate information about the patient's health, and a reliable prediction of the future outcome of a certain disease. That's why the physician has to be careful when he pronounces a prognosis, since ignorant people may confusse his predictions with those made by the diviners, which are commonly known with the Greek word manteiai: this could result in a loss of credibility by the physician. But, in some cases, says, Galen, pronouncing a sensational prognosis -though based on evidence obtained by the observation of the symptoms- could give to the physician the opportunity to impress the crowds and gain popularity and prestige

Impact of scientific production of Italian scientists in exercises and sport sciences by measuring the author-weighted h-index

This study aimed to measure the consistency of the impact of scientific production, weighted by authorship, of Italian scientists in two academic disciplines (AD) of Exercise and Sports Sciences (ESS) from 2017 to 2022, with a specific focus on the subfield "Sport Sciences", using topic-specific keywords. Through the Scopus database, the scientific products of Italian ESS scientists associated with each keyword were identified. Subsequently, total and relative metric parameters from 2017 to 2022 were collected, including the total and relative number of citations. To evaluate the impact of the publications, the total and relative h-index were calculated, and weighted by considering different categories of authorship. Specific weights were attributed to each category: single author, first author, last author and co-author, following the classifications already in use on Scopus for each author. The trends of total and relative metrics, including citations and h-index, from 2017 to 2022 were analyzed using Spearman's correlation. Non-parametric linear regression analysis was used for the predictive analysis of these trends. Among the 83 identified ESS scientists, a detailed analysis revealed that 31.3% were full professors, 42.1% associate professors, and 26.6% researchers. Less than half of these scientists were directly affiliated with ESS. Despite minority representation, significant positive correlations emerge between total and relative citations from 2017 to 2022 (r = 0.687) and between the weighted total h-index and the weighted relative h-index (r = 0.965). Significant trends emerge in the metric parameters of the same scientists when analyzed separately by AD. The regression results indicate that variations in total citations and the weighted total and relative h-index can predict or explain the observed changes in 2017-2022 (p < 0.05). This result suggests that the production and impact of research in the field of ESS follow the same general trend as production and impact in the specific subfield
