    A dynamic stall-corrected Blade Element-Momentum algorithm based on a hybrid polar is validated through the comparison with Sandia experimental measurements on a 5-m diameter wind turbine of Troposkien shape. Different dynamic stall models are evaluated. The numerical predictions obtained using the extended aerodynamic coefficients provided by both Sheldal and Klimas and Raciti Castelli et al. are compared to experimental data, determining the potential of the hybrid database for the numerical prediction of vertical-axis wind turbine performances

    A procedure for the evaluation of geotechnical risk in urban areas: The case of Centuripe town

    In Italy, many urban areas suffer geotechnical hazard problems. However the Municipalities are not yet organised either to deal with the consequences of the possible phenomena, or to plan risk factor mitigation actions, by vulnerability reduction of the exposed elements. Before acting, a deep knowledge of the studied area and of the most important element at risk is needed. For this aim, one of the most widely used procedures is microzonation. This follows the recommendations of the "Manual for zonation on areas susceptible to Rain-Induced Slope failure" (ATCGNH - ISSMFE (Asian Technical Committee on Geotechnology for Natural Hazards in ISSMFE) The Japanese Geotechnical Society, July, 1997), for example, compiling expressly designed penalty forms. In this work, an approach to detect the vulnerability factors of Centuripe town's (EN - central-eastern Sicily) historical centre buildings is shown. A model of the penalty form based on the one proposed by Massimino et al. (The Grade 2 microzonation of Sellano. Italian Geotechnical Journal, XXXV, n.4, pp. 79-89, 2001) and conveniently modified to point out hydrogeological risk (Raciti et al. "GIS Techniques Application in Geological Hazard of Slope Instability Map Editing". Mining and Environmental GeoEngineering, XLV, n. 1, April 2008) is proposed. The proposed forms will be compiled for 101 buildings and 3 roads. © 2009 WIT Press

    Afin d'aborder le sujet de la violence dans les stades, j'ai avant tout analysé brièvement les épisodes les plus graves pour lesquels la chronique sportive s'est colorée de noir, pour arriver enfin au meurtre de Filippo Raciti. Par le biais des 392 articles publiés au mois de février 2007 dans les quotidiens Il Corriere della Sera, la Repubblica, Il Resto del Carlino et l’Unità, j'ai examiné cette affaire criminelle de la manière suivante: premièrement une description du déroulement des faits du 2 février 2007, dans laquelle les séquences et les dynamiques qui ont entraînés la mort de l'inspecteur Raciti emergent, a été effectuée, suivie par une analyse de contenu communicatif des articles dans le but de mettre en évidence les modalités de traitement de l'information dans la presse. Cette analyse se compose d'un volet quantitatif et d'un volet qualitatif: ce dernier a été realisé par le biais d'une fiche de collecte des données divisée en sujets. De cet examen approfondi du language journalistique découlent des réfléxions sur la délicate affaire "Filippo Raciti" et sur la ville de Catane, sur le "système football" en général et sur la situation de la sécurité dans les stades. Enfin, des propositions qui, mettant en évidence les points faibles des lois actuelles, ont pour but d'envisager des interventions pour réduire le comportement violent des supporters.AbstractIn order to deal with the problems of violence in football stadiums, I have first of all shortly analysed the most serious episodes in which have darkened the sporting world and then explained the murder of Filippo Raciti. Through the reading of the 392 articles published on the daily papers Il Corriere della Sera, la Repubblica, Il Resto del Carlino and l'Unità in the month of February 2007, the criminal case is examined in the following way: to a first description of the course of events of February 2nd 2007, in which the sequences and the dynamics that brought inspector Raciti to his death, it follows an analysis of the communicative content of the articles to underline the ways in which the press has treated the matter. This analysis is composed of a quantitative section and of a qualitative section: this last part is realised through a form divided into many thematic areas. From this deep examination of the journalistic language some remarks arise regarding the delicate case of Filippo Raciti and the city of Catania, the "football system" in general and the situation of stadium security. Finally proposal that will advance, underlining weak points of the actual laws, have the objective to formulate interventions to limit the violent behaviour of the hooligans

    Per affrontare un discorso sulla violenza negli stadi, si sono innanzi tutto analizzati brevemente i più gravi episodi in cui la cronaca sportiva si è tinta di nero, per giungere poi all'assassinio di Filippo Raciti. Attraverso la lettura dei 392 articoli pubblicati sui quotidiani Il Corriere della Sera, la Repubblica, Il Resto del Carlino e l’Unità nel mese di febbraio 2007, si è esaminato il fatto criminale nel modo seguente: ad una descrizione dello svolgimento degli eventi la sera del 2 febbraio 2007, in cui emergono le sequenze e le dinamiche che hanno portato alla morte dell’ispettore Raciti, segue un’analisi del contenuto comunicativo degli articoli mirante ad evidenziare le modalità con cui la stampa ha trattato l’argomento. Questa si compone di una prima analisi di tipo quantitativo e di una successiva analisi del contenuto come inchiesta, realizzata attraverso l’utilizzo di una scheda di rilevazione suddivisa in aree tematiche. Da questo esame approfondito del linguaggio giornalistico scaturiscono riflessioni in merito alla delicata vicenda riguardante Filippo Raciti e la città di Catania, al "sistema calcio" in generale e alla situazione sicurezza negli stadi. Vengono infine avanzate alcune proposte che, evidenziando i punti deboli dell’attuale normativa, si pongono l'obiettivo di prospettare interventi per limitare il comportamento violento degli ultrà.     A performance measure analysis for traffic networks with random data and general monotone cost functions

    We consider a congested traffic network where users behave according to the Wardrop equilibrium principle, but the data are uncertain and only known through their probability distributions. Within this framework, we propose a stochastic equilibrium model to analyse the network performance, which allows for nonlinear cost functions. The effectiveness of our approach is shown through numerical experiments on medium-size networks

    Effect of Blade Inclination Angle in a Darrieus Wind Turbine

    This paper presents a model for the evaluation of energy performance and aerodynamic forces acting on a small helical Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine depending on blade inclination angle. It consists of an analytical code coupled to a solid modeling software capable of generating the desired blade geometry depending on the desired design geometric parameters, which is linked to a finite volume CFD code for the calculation of rotor performance. After describing and validating the model with experimental data, the results of numerical simulations are proposed on the bases of five machine architectures, which are characterized by an inclination of the blades with respect to the horizontal plane in order to generate a phase shift angle between lower and upper blade sections of 0 deg, 30 deg, 60 deg, 90 deg, and 120 deg for a rotor having an aspect ratio of 1.5. The effects of blade inclination on tangential and axial forces are first discussed and then the overall rotor torque is considered as a function of azimuthal position of the blades. Finally, the downstream tip recirculation zone due to the finite blade extension is analyzed for each blade inclination angle, achieving a numerical quantification of the influence of induced drag on rotor performance, as a function of both blade element longitudinal and azimuthal positions of the blade itself

    Numerical Evaluation of the Aerodynamic Efficiency of the Stevens & Jolly Vertical-Axis Windmill (1895)

    This paper presents a numerical investigation of the unsteady flow around an American 19th century vertical-axis windmill: the Stevens & Jolly rotor, patented on April 16, 1895. The computational approach used is based on solving the complete transient Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (t-RANS) equations: a full campaign of numerical simulation has been performed using the k-ω SST turbulence model. Flow field characteristics have been investigated for several values of tip speed ratio and for a constant unperturbed free-stream wind velocity of 6 m/s, enabling the study of some unsteady flow phenomena in the rotor wake. Finally, the global power generated from the windmill has been determined for each simulated angular velocity, allowing the calculation of the rotor power-curve
