    Brouwer and cardinalities

    No full text
This note is a somewhat personal account of a paper that L.E.J. Brouwer published in 1908 and that dealt with the possible cardinalities of subsets of the continuum. That paper is of interest because it represents the first time that Brouwer presented his ideas on foundations in an international forum. I found Brouwer's notions and arguments at times hard to grasp if not occasionally perplexing. I hope that this note contributes to a further discussion of the definitions and reasonings as presented in Brouwer's paper.Virtual Special Issue - L.E.J. What Is It Like to Be a Bat-Author? Viktor Pelevin's Empire V

    No full text
In this paper, Viktor Pelevin's novel Empire V (2006) is analysed, with its main concern with the status of language, in fiction as well as in contemporary Russian culture. The work is seen as a kind of sequel to Generation 17: whereas that novel predominantly focused on the problem of consciousness, its problematical relation with reality, but expressed this problem in language, in Empire V the problem of language as the form of consciousness is foregrounded; inevitably thus the status of the text we are reading and the relation it has to its author is problematized - as is the relation it has to its reader. It is a text that reflects on what language, its material, does. The possibility is suggested that this novel tries to rind a way out of postmodernism's anxieties about the conscious personality being an illusion, created by his own language.</p

Cross-sectional stability of double inlet systems

    No full text
Barrier coasts and their associated tidal inlet systems are a common feature in many parts of the world. They constitute dynamic environments that are in a continuous stage of adapting to the prevailing tide and wave conditions. Commonly, these coastal areas are densely populated and (partly) as a result there often exists a strong conflict of interests between issues related to coastal safety, economic activities and ecology. To manage these different interests, it is important to gain more understanding of the long-term morphological evolution of tidal inlet systems and their adaptation to natural changes and human intervention. In this thesis the focus is on double inlet systems, where two tidal inlets connect a back-barrier basin to an ocean or a coastal sea. To investigate the morphological evolution of double inlet systems and their adaptation to internal or external change, the equilibrium configuration and stability properties of the cross-sectional areas of the two tidal inlets are studied in detail. To that extent, a widely used empirical relationship for cross-sectional inlet stability is combined with (i) a lumped-parameter (L-P) model (Chapters 2 and 3) and (ii) a two-dimensional, depth-averaged hydrodynamic (2DH) model for the water motion (Chapter 4). The Marsdiep-Vlie inlet system in the western Dutch Wadden Sea and the Faro-Armona inlet system in the Portuguese Ria Formosa serve as case studies throughout this thesis. With the assumptions of a cross-sectionally averaged, uniform inlet flow velocity and a uniformly fluctuating basin surface elevation, model results of the L-P model show that stable equilibrium configurations where both inlets are open exist. It is necessary, however, to account for the important processes either explicitly, e.g. including a topographic high in the back-barrier basin as observed in the Wadden Sea (Chapter 2), or parametrically, e.g. allowing for inlet entrance/exit losses for relatively short inlets such as in the Ria Formosa (Chapter 3). By solving the depth-averaged, linear shallow water equations on the f-plane with linearised bottom friction, the 2DH model explicitly accounts for spatial variations in surface elevation in the ocean, inlets and basin. Model results show that these spatial variations, induced by e.g. basin bottom friction, radiation damping, and Coriolis effects, are crucial to simulate and explain the long-term evolution of double inlet systems. This approach further allows the identification of a stabilising and destabilising mechanism associated with the persistence or closure of one (or both) of the inlets in a double inlet system and hence with its long-term evolution.Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

The Other Side of Moon: The Schengen Information System and Human Rights: A Task for National Courts. CEPS Working Document No. 288/April 2008

    No full text
The recent proposals of the European Commission for a European Border Management Strategy are based on an almost blind faith in the use of large-scale databases, identification measures and biometrics for immigration and border control purposes. It is clear that these measures entail a risk to the protection of not only the right to privacy and the right to data protection, but also to the freedom of movement and the principle of non-discrimination. This paper by Evelien Brouwer, lecturer at the Law School of Utrecht University, considers the human rights implications of the Schengen Information System (SIS). Describing the case of Mr. and Mrs. Moon, who have been reported as “inadmissible” in the SIS for more than ten years, the difficulties for thirdcountry nationals trying to remedy a false or unlawful SIS report are highlighted. The Moon case illustrates that the outcome of national proceedings dealing with an SIS alert can be very different. The author concludes with recommendations to guarantee individuals’ rights to effective remedies and to improve the position and powers of national courts

Dogma documental de La Habana: Leo Brouwer de José Padrón

    No full text
This article deals with the methods used by the director José Padron in creating an artistic documentary featuring the well-known Cuban composer-guitarist Leo Brouwer (Leo Brouwer, 35mn, 2000, co-produced by the ICAIC and the SGAE). Analyzing the making of this hour-long documentary takes into account the director's previous documentaries as well as a personal interview granted by the author in February 2003 in Havana. By using the "Dogma Documentary of Havana", which brings together many aspects of Cuban reality and of the personality of Leo Brouwer, we can perceive that in his musical creations there exists a strong relationship between the impulses of life, Cuban culture and history, and also other artistic expressions springing from cinema, dance and painting.

Leo Brouwer\u27s Estudios Sencillos for Guitar: Afro-Cuban Elements and Pedagogical Devices

    No full text
This document presents a detailed performance and pedagogical analysis of the Estudios Sencillos by the Cuban composer, Leo Brouwer. Such pertinent musical aspects as biographical data of the composer, Afro-Cuban traditions, Cuban composers, and philosophical and artistic trends that impacted Brouwer\u27s aesthetic world are studied and discussed. Virtually any of Brouwer\u27s works can serve to convey this information, but it is particularly this group of pieces that better suits the study of Afro-Cuban elements within a pedagogical focus since no other of Brouwer\u27s compositions is set with this particular target in mind: etudes for the development and/or implementation of a particular technical skill. The author offers suggestions for each of the etudes regarding fingerings, strokes, dynamics, and interpretation based on his own findings and pedagogical experience. A chapter of the document is dedicated to describing the Afro-Cuban phenomena that served as an influence to Brouwer\u27s oeuvre. A glossary of important terms is also included
