Ubi finitur armorum vis. Ontologia e geometria politica nel dibattito moderno sulla sovranità dei mari (1355-1782)
Throughout the course of the modern age, legal-political philosophy has been challenged by the problem of the freedom or sovereignty of the seas. After the solutions initially proposed by Bartolus of Saxoferrato and Baldus de Ubaldis to establish the exact extension of the territorial sea, the debate became paradigmatic thanks to the querelle between Grotius (author of Mare liberum) and Selden (author of Mare clausum). The dispute continued with the analyses of Paolo Sarpi, Cornelius van Bynkershoek, Immanuel Kant and Ferdinando Galiani. The controversy over territorial seas is one of the crucial moments of the modern age. In it, the relationship between the agency of the subject and the space is radically rethought, proposing two theoretical diagrams: an ontological-political one, in which the subject is a function of the space; a geometrical-political one, in which the space is a function of the subject. The essay traces this debate identifying the theoretical issues on which it is based
Teoria del muro. L'articolazione materiale del potere
In this paper the author analyzes the issue of the statal wall through an interdisciplinary
perspective which connects ontology, philosophy of technology and political philosophy.
The main argument of the paper is that there is an ontological difference between a statal
wall and the border on which it is inscribed. After a brief discussion of some well-known
ontological theories, the author argues that a wall is not a social object, but rather an
artifact. More specifically, a wall is a political artifact, because it is an instrument that
materially inscribes on the space a complex relation of power. In order to conceptualize
an emerging global political rationality, a new term has been coined by french scholars
Florine Ballif and Stéphane Rosière: teichopolitics. The term comes from the ancient
greek teichos, which literally means “the wall of the city”. Therefore, teichopolitics is the
politics of building walls, most of the time for security purposes. The paper deals with
some aspects of contemporary teichopolitics from a philosophical point view. In the first
part of the paper, the author criticizes the postmodern idea of a virtual and fluid global
space, and the connected idea of an historical and political consummation of modern
categories (e.g. State, territory, sovereignty); in the second part, he analyzes thoroughly
the ontological difference between wall and border and some phenomenological aspects
related; in the third part, he shows how and why a wall studied as an apparatus (dispositif)
implies the acknowledgement of different forms of power (e.g. sovereign, disciplinary,
governamental); in the last part, he argues that the issue of statal walls should be analysed
through what he calls a political ontology of the artifacts
L'occupazione dello spazio e la presa di possesso. Carl Schmitt e Immanuel Kant
The paper analyzes the concept of Landnahme through the philosophical frameworks
provided by Kant and Schmitt. In the first part the concept of «taking possession» in
Kant’s doctrine of right is taken into account. In the second part, Kant’s theory is criticized
through the Schmittian concept of nomos as the co-presence of juridical order and
spatial localization. The aim of the third part is to show how both Kant’s and Schmitt’s
theories end up supporting the vision of a relationship between the individual and the
world dominated by an exclusivist and possessive logic. In the conclusions, the Author
argues for a man-space relationship firstly based on the act of dwelling, suggesting a
possible political reformulation of the history of the nomos
Asthma and respiratory physiology : putting lung function into perspective
Bronchial asthma is a chronic disease characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, airway inflammation and remodelling. The hypothesis that the illness is inflammatory in nature has recently been challenged by studies showing that airway smooth muscle (ASM) plays a more important role than previously thought. For example, it is now known that in asthma patients, ASM proliferates more and faster than in healthy subjects, carries intrinsic defects and exhibits impaired relaxation, increased velocity of shortening, plastic adaptation to short length and perturbed equilibrium of actin-to-myosin during cycling. Similar conclusions can be drawn from studies on airway mechanics. For instance, in asthma, abnormal ASM contributes to limiting the response to deep lung stretching and accelerates the return of bronchial tone to baseline conditions, and contributes to increased airway stiffness. Upon stimulation, ASM causes airway narrowing that is heterogeneous across the lung and variable over time. This heterogeneity leads to patchy ventilation. Experimental studies have shown that patchy ventilation may precipitate an asthma attack, and inability to maintain bronchial tone control over time can predict the occurrence of bronchospastic attacks over a matter of a few days.To improve our knowledge on the pathogenesis of asthma, we believe that it is necessary to explore the disease within the framework of the topographical, volume and time domains of the lung that play an important role in setting the severity and progression of the disease. Application of the forced oscillation technique and multiple breath nitrogen washout may, alone or in combination, help address questions unsolvable until now
Copper-Catalyzed C-C Bond Formation via C-H Functionalization: Synthesis of Multisubstituted Indoles from N-(Aryl)enaminones
A variety of functionalities, including the whole range of halogen substituents, are tolerated in the title reaction, an intramolecular approach for the construction of a multisubstituted indole skeleton from readily available enaminones (see scheme; phen=1,10-phenanthroline). The indole products are also prepared directly in high yield from a,b-ynones and primary amines

Short and medium-range Order in L-Proline Esters Ionic Liquids: A X-Ray and MD Study
In the present work, we discuss the structural features of some amino-acid chiral ionic liquids (CILs), L-Proline alkyl esters nitrates and chlorides. These compounds have recently shown very good
capabilities in chiral discrimination studies such as separations and asymmetric syntheses. Energy-Dispersive X-Ray patterns of L-Proline alkyl esters (ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl and hexyl) chlorides
were obtained and confronted with theoretical curves calculated from molecular dynamics trajectories. In the structure factors of all the liquids examined, pre-peaks (FSDP) of intensity
proportional to the alkyl chain length are present, but, more surprisingly, from butyl chain upwards, the principal scattering peak appears to be split into two contributions, resembling what happens in liquid water. The spatial arrangement of the ions giving origin to these patterns is discusse
