Objective assessment of movement competence in children using wearable sensors: An instrumented version of the TGMD-2 locomotor subtest

    No full text
Movement competence (MC) is defined as the development of sufficient skill to assure successful performance in different physical activities. Monitoring children MC during maturation is fundamental to detect early minor delays and define effective intervention. To this purpose, several MC assessment batteries are available. When evaluating movement strategies, with the aim of identifying specific skill components that may need improving, widespread MC assessment is limited by high time consumption for scoring and the need for trained operators to ensure reliability. This work aims to facilitate and support the assessment by designing, implementing and validating an instrumented version of the TGMD-2 locomotor subtest based on Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) to quantify MC in children rapidly and objectively. 45 typically developing children, aged 6–10, performed the TGMD-2 locomotor subtest (six skills). During the tests, children wore five IMUs mounted on lower back, on ankles and on wrists. Sensor and video recordings of the tests were collected. Three expert evaluators performed the standard assessment of TGMD-2. Using theoretical and modelling approaches, algorithms were implemented to automatically score children tests based on IMUs’ data. The automatic assessment, compared to the standard one, showed an agreement higher than 87% on average on the entire group for each skill and a reduction of time for scoring from 15 to 2 min per participant. Results support the use of IMUs for MC assessment: this approach will allow improving the usability of MC assessment, supporting objectively evaluator decisions and reducing time requirement for the evaluation of large groups

Institutional economics analysis of contractual arrangements; managing wildlife and landscape on Dutch farms

    No full text
This thesis focused on land use in which agriculture is combined with wildlife and landscape management. The objective of the study was to analyse the design of contractual arrangements for wildlife and landscape management by farmers. An important method used in this thesis was a literary approach combined with statistical tools using data from mail surveys. The literary approach is based on theory and makes use of close reasoning. Other methods used were formal models concerning the decision to contract and the consequences of contracting at the farm level. This thesis has concentrated on the supply side, especially on the institutional organisation. The research focussed on institutional aspects of wildlife and landscape management and contributed to the study of wildlife and landscape because it helps to establish a link between supply and demand. This study has shown that contractual arrangements and environmental co-operatives are suitable arrangements for the provision of wildlife and landscape, and that they deserve attention from the viewpoint of empirical science as well as of policy makers

Think aloud: acute stress and coping strategies during golf performances

    No full text
A limitation of the sport psychology coping literature is the amount of time between a stressful episode and the recall of the coping strategies used in the stressful event (Nicholls & Polman, 2007). The purpose of this study was to develop and implement a technique to measure acute stress and coping during performance. Five high-performance adolescent golfers took part in Level 2 verbalization think aloud trials (Ericsson & Simon, 1993), which involved participants verbalizing their thoughts, over six holes of golf. Verbal reports were audio-recorded during each performance, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using protocol analysis (Ericsson & Simon, 1993). Stressors and coping strategies varied throughout the six holes, which support the proposition that stress and coping is a dynamic process that changes across phases of the same performance (Lazarus, 1999). The results also revealed information regarding the sequential patterning of stress and coping, suggesting that the golfers experienced up to five stressors before reporting a coping strategy. Think aloud appears a suitable method to collect concurrent stress and coping data

Temporal adaptations in generic and population-specific quality of life and falls efficacy in men with recent lower-limb amputations

    No full text
This study examined the longitudinal changes in generic health-related quality of life (QOL), prosthesis-related QOL, falls efficacy, and walking speed in men with lower-limb amputations up to 6 months following discharge from rehabilitation. Seven male unilateral transtibial amputees completed the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey, the Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaire, and the Modified Falls Efficacy Scale at 1, 3, and 6 months postdischarge from rehabilitation. Walking speed was also recorded to objectively assess participants– mobility. Health-related QOL measures displayed increases, resulting in large effect sizes though not reaching statistical significance. Prosthesis-related QOL measures indicated that scales relating to the participants– prostheses improved and the support of significant others was the most positively scored variable. Walking speed increased by 0.12 m/s, although it was not significantly related to indices of QOL or falls efficacy. Falls efficacy did not improve significantly during the study period, although it was strongly related to QOL (p < 0.05). These results provide a novel insight into how QOL and falls efficacy develop in people with lower-limb amputations, alongside changes in mobility, after discharge from rehabilitation. Further improvements in physical health following discharge may be required to elicit subsequent increases in overall QOL and concurrent improvements in falls efficacy
