The monastic life according to saint Nilus
The present dissertation comprises an introductory section and four main chapters. The introductory section deals with the life of St Nilus, focusing especially on the problem of his historical identity which has been debated since the closing years of the last century, i.e. whether he is Nilus Ancyranus or Nilus Sinaita, and with St Nilus' theological method in his indisputable identity as master of monks. This leads on to the main topic of the dissertation which is examined in the following four chapters: monastic life. Chapter I examines the essence of the monastic life as it can be detected in the extant writings of St Nilus. The main themes here are those of: self-renunciation, as the principle which leads to the differentiation between true and false personality, and, the science or art of being a leader or a follower of the spiritual path which specifies the true person. Chapter II examines the basic theme of passions, providing first a sort of spiritual anatomy of the human psyche, looking in some detail into the meaning and use of such terms as soul, heart, mind, perception, and also into the interrelationships of the soul’s powers and functions. This becomes the basis for analysing Nilus' theory of passions, including the role of the devil and the function of demonic deceit. Chapter III examines the positive method of the masters of the desert in fighting passion and demonic deceit. This includes such themes as the scriptures, the saints, the icons, the desert and dispossession. Particular attention is given to the theme of silence which is closely related to that of the desert and to self-understanding. Chapter IV concentrates on what might be called the most essential function of the life of the ascetic when he arrives at the more mature level of progress. This is the function of nepsis, vigilance and prayer, which is crowed by union with God. Several sub-themes are treated here, such as the study of God by means of participation in the sacramental life of confession and communion and of adoption of the spiritual exercises of prayer, manual labour vigil and psahmody. The last sub-theme of this chapter is that of the martyrdom of nepsis which is connected with the memory of the last judgement and with the gift of tears and penthos. The theses concludes with a brief epilogue and bibliography
Apharitis nilus Hewitson 1865
*51. Apharitis nilus Hewitson, 1865 WL: 15mm. Both species and genus are new for Guinea-Bissau. This is a typical element of the Sudan savanna, Sahel and subdesert areas. The specimens were collected in savanna woodland in Beli (Boé), always on flowers of Terminalia albida (Combretaceae), despite the presence of other species such as Acacia macrostachya (Mimosaceae), around which several Acraea and Pieridae were flying. The species occurs in Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Chad, northern Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya and Sudan. Studied material. Gabú: Beli (Boé), 3-4.07.2009, 2♂, 2♀ (BS 28860/28863). Probable abundance and proposed status. The Writings of Nilus of Ancyra: Selected Issues
Wydział Filologii Polskiej i KlasycznejPraca została poświęcona pisarstwu Nila z Ankyry, płodnemu, choć dość enigmatycznemu autorowi z przełomu IV i V wieku. The work is dedicated to the writings of Nilus of Ancyra, a prolific, though somewhat enigmatic author living at the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries. The subject under scrutiny is the imagery and persuasive potential of his works in the process of literary transmission. At the center of the considerations presented here is the author’s favorite and most commonly used literary tool: sport metaphors. The 1st chapter is dedicated to what we know of the author and his Greek works, as well as to his literary erudition and learning. The 2nd chapter attempts to find recipients of his works through constructing the image of his virtual reader. It also presents a cognitive approach to the metaphor (Lakoff-Johnson theory) and embodied cognition theory, as well as an overview of the history of sport in Greek literature and its status in the Late Antiquity. Nilus’ sport metaphors have undergone a quantitative and qualitative analysis in the 3rd chapter; here also attention has been drawn to some of its literary inspirations. 4th chapter is focused on the literary world created by Nilus by using his sport metaphors, together with potential psychosocial consequences to the readers. The final chapter is dedicated to the larger text entities in his works, in order to show how the author constructs literary sequences (codes) by combining multiple tools
Software-Defined Underwater Acoustic Modems: Historical Review and the NILUS Approach
Flexible/adaptive acoustic modems that are reprogrammable/reconfigurable at all layers of the communication stack, either by a user or by means of autonomous decisions, are considered as an important enabler for interoperability and cognitive networking in the underwater domain. In this paper, we review the existing literature on software-defined acoustic modems (SDAMs) for underwater communications and networking, considering past and ongoing academic efforts, as well as industrial developments and European collaborations centered on software-defined modem structures and functionalities. We then zoom in on relevant R&D efforts currently taking place in a defense cooperation between The Netherlands and Norway, targeting the design of a software-defined modem for the NILUS MK 2 sensor node. This modem is built using general-purpose (GP) computing architectures running open-source operating system and tools, thereby making a further step toward software-defined open-architecture underwater acoustic modems. The first field tests of the NILUS MK 2 node in multihop underwater acoustic networks are presented, showing satisfactory performance in shallow and open waters.pu
Aboveground biomass estimation in tropical forests at single tree level with ALS data
In this paper we present a study on the estimation of the aboveground biomass in tropical forests at single tree level using airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. Individual tree crowns (ITCs) are firstly detected using a method based on an adaptive window that change its size according to tree height. The diameter at breast height (DBH) and the aboveground biomass (AGB) of each ITC then are predicted using standard allometric models. Lastly, the AGB values are aggregated at plot level, and compared with field measured values. The results show that it is possible to accurately predict the aboveground biomass of tropical forests at single tree level using ALS dat
Vegetation and botanical highlights of Pulau Sakar Forest Reserve
Pulau Sakar Forest Reserve, which was regazetted as Class VI forest reserve (Virgin Jungle Reserve) with an area of about 760 ha, is largely formed from intrusive igneous rocks, and is located on the large ultramafic island in Darvel Bay, Lahad Datu. A survey conducted on the vegetation quality in August 2009 shows that the reserve comprises 58% disturbed lowland ultramafic forest, 40% secondary vegetation with various qualities, while 1% of the reserve has been encroached by local villagers at the northeast portion of the VJR, and 1% classified as mangrove vegetation. A total of 293 taxa from 80 families have been recorded from the reserve. Nine taxa found in the reserve are endemic to Borneo, and 3 are endemic to Sabah. None of the plants recorded is found to be endemic to Pulau Sakar. This paper also discusses the threats in the reserve, and puts forward recommendations in maintaining the integrity of this ultramafic

Topography shapes the structure, composition and function of tropical forest landscapes
Topography is a key driver of tropical forest structure and composition, as it constrains local
nutrient and hydraulic conditions within which trees grow. Yet, we do not fully understand how
changes in forest physiognomy driven by topography impact other emergent properties of forests,
such as their aboveground carbon density (ACD). Working in Borneo – at a site where 70-m-tall
forests in alluvial valleys rapidly transition to stunted heath forests on nutrient-depleted dip slopes
– we combined field data with airborne laser scanning and hyperspectral imaging to characterise
how topography shapes the vertical structure, wood density, diversity and ACD of nearly 15 km2
of old-growth forest. We found that subtle differences in elevation – which control soil chemistry
and hydrology – profoundly influenced the structure, composition and diversity of the canopy.
Capturing these processes was critical to explaining landscape-scale heterogeneity in ACD, highlighting
how emerging remote sensing technologies can provide new insights into long-standing
ecological question
Pseudo-Nilus’s Narrationes: a product of Julian’s edict against Christian teachers?
This paper suggests that the Narrationes, which have been attributed to Nilus of Ancyra or an unknown Sinai monk, was composed as a result of the Emperor Julian’s Edict prohibiting Christians from teaching pagan literature. This article begins by describing the Narrationes and how scholarship has identified its author and composition date. It then presents the evidence of the Sinai monastic communities as described in the Narrationes as indicative of a fourth century date
