    An encounter with Claudio Magris (1939) writer, essayist, lecturer, columnist, correspondent, Doktorvater, even diner, reveals a marked propensity for anecdote. In the case of ‘light non-fiction’ Magris strategically places the episode, the parable, the story, the memory, at the opening or closing, so as to blur the distance between the author and the things on the page . It is a rhetorical architecture that, if need be, already shrugs off challenging topics at the outset - questions of poetics, the graft between cultural identity and nationhood, ideological extremism. Gregor von Rezzori (1914-1998) is aware of this propensity for anecdote. In a paper conserved in the Fondo Magris at the Archivio Viesseux, he agrees with his friend on the contents of an interview in the Corriere della Sera that would anticipate the publication in translation of the short story Ritorno a Cernpol

    The paper focuses on the forms of cooperation between authors and their translator(s) in all cases in which the two operate simultaneously. This issue is explored on the example of the Trieste-born author Claudio Magris, who cultivates a very close relationship with most of his translators. Writing and translation have been coexisting in this author throughout his career and have resulted in the heightened sensitivity of Magris the author with regards to translation, as the first part of the analysis shows. The second part describes the dialogue between Magris and the translators of his works, and ends with the more general question of the significance and role of such a form of exchange

    Taking inspiration from the book "Capitalism" by Alberto Mingardi, we first try to summarize the true meaning that the author attributes to this system. Mingardi, in this regard, follows the historian Deirdre McCloskey, for whom capitalism is not only an unprecedented and accelerated process of capital accumulation, but also the genesis of a new ethos that produces the "culture of growth" and the "great enrichment". However, we ask ourselves whether there are schools of thought adequate to describe the capitalist system as Mingardi intends it. We also raise serious doubts about financial capitalism's ability to promote social harmony and peace. Finally, we observe how capitalism is at present moving from a competitive configuration to a substantially corporative and oligopolistic one

    Claudio Magris reports his experience as an author owing a lot to translation, the task of self-translating and the fact of being translated in many different languages. In general, “translations” are underestimated in their intellectual value. As far as literary translations are concerned, they should be considered as real creative activities. Literary texts themselves – such as the short stories “Averroës Search” (“La Busca de Averroes”) by Borges and “Bad Nature” (“Mala índole”) by Javier Marìas – often reflect on translations and on questions dealing with translating issues. Moreover, Magris points out specific translating difficulties concerning his works (such as rhythmic, metaphorical and cross-cultural questions)

    What Claudio Magris calls his “true translation” begins with the work on German literature texts and in particular on plays by Grillparzer, Büchner, Kleist and Schnitzler. For Magris the theatre reconnects writing to its lifeblood, associates rhythmic and rhetorical figures with the voice and gestures of the interpreters on the scene, facilitating the work of the translator who in his imagination must dissolve the meanings and the mere musicality of the original text in a new sounding board, in a new way of being. This intervention moves on two levels: first of all it takes into consideration Magris’ thoughts on translation which do not arise exclusively on a theoretical level and place the author in the twentieth-century tradition of translating poets. Secondly, we analyze how Magris concretely overcomes in its translations the historical and cultural gap between the source language and the target language and aims to conquer at least ideal simultaneity or synchrony with the classics of German literature

    Artykuł jest poświęcony twórczości eseistycznej Claudio Magrisa, wybitnego włoskiego eseisty i badacza kultur z obszaru Europy Środkowej oraz Bałkanów. Podstawa rozważań są znane prace Magrisa, zwłaszcza „Mikrokosmosy”, „Dunaj”, „Podróż bez końca”. Autor artykułu wydobywa ważne wątki twórczości Magrisa: wątek nostalgii i melancholii, harmonii i rozpadu. Dokonuje analizy myśli Magrisa, odnosząc wskazane wątki do świata, w którym autor „Dunaju” zakorzenia, najważniejsze według niego, wartości Europy Środkowej. Jest to świat nieistniejącej austro-węgierskiej monarchii sprzed roku 1918, pokazany w kontekście współczesnego rozpadu humanizmu, norm moralnych i totalnego relatywizmu.The article is dedicated to the essayistic work of Claudio Magris, a great Italian essayist and researcher of culture in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Magris’ well-known works such as “Microspaces”, “The Danube” and “Endless travels” constitute the foundation for the discussion. The author of the article extracts important plots in Magris’ works such as nostalgia and melancholy, harmony and disintegration. He carries out an analysis of Magris’ writings bymeans of referring the above mentioned plots to the world in which the author of “The Danube” sees the roots of the most important in his opinion values of Central Europe. It is a world of the non-existent Austro-Hungarian monarchy from before 1918 shown in the context of the fall of humanism, moral norms and absolute relativism.

    The present contribution aims at investigating the interrelation of creativity and level of competence in students of translation science. In order to find out whether creativity increases or decreases with the acquisition of more advanced competencies and skills in text analysis, translation and translation assessment, a didactic experiment was devised that involved students from different courses (both at Bachelor’s and Master’s level). The experiment focused on the translation of idiomatic expressions, which often pose a challenge for translators and are supposed to enhance creativity. The author first classified the translations according to a typology of correspondences, in order to assess the students’ degree of basic creativity. In a second step, the quality of the provided solutions was judged, in order to establish the degree of what has been termed successful creativity. The results are encouraging, although further studies are certainly needed
