The dialectical behavior therapy ways of coping checklist: development and psychometric properties
Skills training is a crucial mode of treatment in dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT; Linehan, 1993b), yet a psychometrically sound measure of DBT skills use does not exist. We adapted the Revised Ways of Coping Checklist (RWCCL; Vitaliano, Russo, Carr, Maiuro, & Becker, 1985) to create the DBT Ways of Coping Checklist (DBT-WCCL). Using factor analysis procedures, two subscales emerged: one assessing coping via DBT skills, the DBT Skills Subscale (DSS), and one assessing coping via dysfunctional means, the Dysfunctional Coping Subscale (DCS). Principal component, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and content validity analyses suggested that the scale has good to excellent psychometric properties. In addition, the DSS successfully discriminated patients who received skills training during 4 months of treatment from patients who did not. Moderators of skills use are also discussed. The DBT-WCCL appears to be a promising new measure of DBT skills use

Dialectical behavior therapy for pervasive emotion dysregulation: Theoretical and practical underpinnings
Dialectical behavior therapy for borderline personality disorder
Since the introduction of Linehan's treatment manuals in 1993, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has been widely disseminated throughout multiple therapeutic settings and applied to a variety of diagnoses. The enthusiasm with which it was embraced by clinicians early on led some to question whether DBT's popularity was outstripping its empirical foundation. Most of the specific concerns raised regarding DBT's early empirical base have been meaningfully addressed in subsequent randomized controlled trials. This review provides a brief introduction to DBT, followed by a critical appraisal of empirical support for the treatment and a discussion of current research trends
Modifying CBT to Meet the Challenge of Treating Emotion Dysregulation
Dialectics are a cornerstone of dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT; Linehan, 1993), and are considered an essential component of treating emotion dysregulation. Incorporating dialectics may enhance therapeutic collaboration, increase flexible thinking, and maximize solution generation. This chapter briefly describes a dialectical world view, then lays out steps for incorporating dialectics into a therapy session, including adopting a dialectical world view, maintaining balance in treatment, working toward synthesis whenever polarization occurs, and utilizing dialectical strategies. Dialectical strategies are any strategies that involve looking for what is left out, synthesizing two poles, and allowing the synthesis to move the interaction forward to a new position. These strategies include magnifying the tension between opposites (such as devil’s advocate and extending strategies), entering the paradox (such as ‘and versus but’ and ‘making lemonade out of lemons’ strategies), and the use of metaphors. While these strategies were developed within DBT, other treatments utilize dialectical approaches, as well.</p
Beantown Centennials at Ford Hall Forum, video recording, 5/10/2012
Director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, Peter Meade, moderates a program celebrating Boston\u27s three exciting centennials in 2012. Author of the full-color and thoroughly researched Fenway Park: The Centennial, Saul Wisnia shares original commentary by three generations of Boston Red Sox players and fans, plus little-known stories about our favorite stadium. President & CEO of Zoo New England, John Linehan, then reveals how radically Boston\u27s zoos — and zoology itself — have changed in a century, while describing our furry friends who live there now. Finally, the Fairmont Copley Plaza\u27s Regional Vice President and General Manager, Paul Tormey, showcases the history and trivia behind Boston\u27s jewel of hospitality in the Back Bay. Join us for a conversation on Boston\u27s three incredible attractions that only comes once in a hundred years.https://dc.suffolk.edu/fhf-av/1122/thumbnail.jp
Use of suramin in treatment of prostatic carcinoma refractory to conventional hormonal manipulation
Suramin is a polysulfated aromatic compound with many structural and functional properties similar to those of heparin and heparan sulfate. In particular, this drug is capable of binding to and interfering with the function of a variety of growth factors and enzyme systems critical to tumor cell proliferation. This observation, together with the drug's documented growth inhibitory effect on prostate cells in vitro and its adrenocorticolytic properties in vivo, provides the rationale for evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of suramin in patients with prostate cancer refractory to conventional hormonal therapy. Thus far, objective tumor regression and declines in the level of prostate-specific antigen have been seen in some patients. Efforts are being made to improve and intensify drug dosing so as to define better its role in the management of metastatic prostate cancer
