Dear Dan:
You very clearly expressed my sentiments in your editorial “Ignorant North Carolina”. Every word is in exact line with my thinking and while I can't express it in such clear terms. I can think such thoughts as you brought out.
If Bob ever goes back to the Senate, it will be through no management of mine. I'm through with him and not only that, I'm ashamed that I ever sponsored his cause in his first campaign. Your other editorials are equally as good and I feel are doing much good at this time.
Yours sincerely,
Raymond R.Nicholsondelet
The role of educative thought in the life and work of Antonio Gramsci
Many philosophers have propounded a vision of an improved society, what distinguishes Antonio Gramsci is his continuous effort to make it happen by understanding the process in order to put into practice. Gramsci's conviction about the importance of educative development came from both theory and experience. While there has been considerable examination of Gramsci's work in relation to the Prison Notebooks, this study will seek to address a lacuna in Gramsci scholarship. Using Gramsci's philological method, I analyse Gramsci's pre-prison activity; his pre-prison articles and letters, which, together with his letters from prison, formed part of his educative mission. This educative process was necessary, in order to construct a new party which would develop a collective will, collaboratively, with the masses. In this study therefore, I explore the contexts and formative experiences of the first part of his life together with the intellectual sources from which Gramsci developed his later theories, making central hitherto underemphasised connections between them which informed his writing and ideas. I intend to illustrate that Gramsci's underlying purpose in his writing, and political activity, was not only practical, on how to create a new socialist ruling class, but also educative in forming the mindset and values of his comrades. So that in addition to outlining his vision of a new order, he implicitly guided or explicitly explained the processes by which the necessary changes in social relations and moral climate could be made in order to achieve it. Each person had to engage with the values of the new order so that each could contribute to the construction of a new robust state. It was essential to build a hegemony at the most profound level, one which was dependent on collective understandings and a collective will

This black and white photograph was taken in Newton and features a studio portrait of one woman and three young boys. The woman is Lottie Hart Nicholson with her sons John, Malcolm, and Warren. Written in ink on frame: November 25, 1924. Stamped on frame: The Murphy Studio, I. J. Myers, Prop. Newton, Kansas. Lottie is sitting and is wearing a light colored blouse and skirt. Her younger sons are sitting next to her and are both wearing shorts outfits, while her oldest son is standing behind them and he is wearing a white shirt and tie.https://scholars.fhsu.edu/harvey/1487/thumbnail.jp
Raymond R. Nicholson to Dan Tompkins
Raymond Rockhill Nicholson was born in Jackson County in 1898. He studied at what is today known as Western Carolina University. From 1917 to 1921, he served as principle of three different public schools. Between the years 1920 and 1926, he served as registrar of deeds of Jackson County. He was a member of the County Board of Elections and actively served the Democratic Party. When Nicholson wrote this letter, he was probably working with Mead Corporation or the C.J. Harris Community Hospital as an accountant. Fourteen years after he wrote this letter, he was appointed to state senate where he served in 1955 and 1956 (Jackson County Genealogical Society).Dan Tompkins was born in Webster, NC in 1890. He graduated from high school in Waynesville and studied law at Wake Forest College. The Jackson County Journal started in 1906, and Tompkins became the editor in chief in 1912. He served in the military in 1917 and 1918 during World War I, during which time he was part of the offensive that broke the Hindenburg line at Ballicourt, France (Jackson County Genealogical Society). After his honorable discharge, Tompkins returned to his job at the Journal and was elected Mayor of Sylva as a Democrat. He was Jackson County’s representative to the General Assembly in 1933, 1939, and 1943
The tail of the Jurassic fish Leedsichthys problematicus (Osteichthyes: Actinopterygii) collected by Alfred Nicholson Leeds - an example of the importance of historical records in palaeontology
The specimen of the tail of Leedsichthys problematicus, now in The Natural History Museum, London, was one of the most spectacular fossil vertebrates from the Oxford Clay Formation of Peterborough, but as an isolated find it shares no bones in common with the holotype of the genus and species. However, a letter from Alfred Nicholson Leeds and related documents cast valuable new light on the excavation of the tail, indicating that it was discovered with cranial bones, gill-rakers, and two pectoral fins, thereby including elements that can potentially be compared with those of the holotype. The documents also clearly indicate that The Natural History Museum's specimen is not part of the same individual as any other numbered specimen of Leedsichthys as had been speculated on other occasions. The maximum size of the animal represented by The Natural History Museum's specimen was possibly around 9 metres, considerably less than previous estimates of up to 27.6 metres for Leedsichthys. Historical documentary evidence should therefore be rigorously checked both when studying historical specimens in science, and in preparing text for museum display labels

Learning Bayesian Networks with the bnlearn R Package
bnlearn is an R package (R Development Core Team 2010) which includes several algorithms for learning the structure of Bayesian networks with either discrete or continuous variables. Both constraint-based and score-based algorithms are implemented, and can use the functionality provided by the snow package (Tierney et al. 2008) to improve their performance via parallel computing. Several network scores and conditional independence algorithms are available for both the learning algorithms and independent use. Advanced plotting options are provided by the Rgraphviz package (Gentry et al. 2010).

Quantum techniques for classical black holes
Modern theoretical physics has benefited from a rapid growth in mathematical
technology. In particular, technology developed in one field can be quickly
adapted for use in another. Two key techniques developed for simplifying
calculations of Feynman diagrams are spinor-helicity and the double copy. This
thesis will discuss how they can be applied to general relativity.
Spinor-helicity is used in particle physics to simplify expressions. In D > 4 this is
done by observing that the residual symmetry of the little group is non-trivial. We
adapt this technology to classify higher-dimensional spacetimes in the style of the
D = 4 Petrov classification. Focusing on D = 5, our scheme naturally reproduces
the full structure previously seen in both the CMPP and de Smet classifications,
and resolves long-standing questions concerning their relationship.
We review the exact classical double copy introduced for stationary Kerr-Schild
spacetimes. We consider a time-dependent generalisation: the accelerating,
radiating point particle. This Kerr-Schild solution has a non-trivial stress-energy
tensor which we interpret as the radiative part of the field and find the
corresponding single copy. Using Bremsstrahlung as an example, we determine
a scattering amplitude describing the radiation which is consistent with the
quantum double copy. This indicates a profound connection between exact
classical solutions and the double copy.
The double copy relates YM and gravity amplitudes through the observation
that numerators of Feynman diagrams can be made to obey a Jacobi relation
mirroring the colour charges. This additional structure can be adapted for use in
classical perturbative calculations. The double copy maps to N = 0 supergravity
requiring careful treatment of the dilaton. Using the Janis-Newman-Winicour
family of naked singularities as an example we demonstrate how to construct
spacetime metrics through a systematic perturbative expansion
