The History of Defining Youth: Current Implications for Identifying and Treating Delinquent Youth

    No full text
This article presents a historical overview of how legally and socially constructed definitions of childhood and youth have, and continue to, shape the identification, treatment and research surrounding delinquent youth. Even though we age biologically along a continuum, formal social systems, most notably the courts and our system of rights, are based on specific chronological age parameters which impose a rigid element to something that is otherwise fluid. This often results in subjective decision making regarding sanctions and treatment options among family and criminal court systems as well as other professionals who work closely with delinquent youth. This article highlights the importance of considering more than the specific delinquent act in determining the fate of youth. Consideration of individual characteristics and environmental factors will bring us closer to a more comprehensive strategy including intervention efforts to the family and community/ neighborhood level to stimulate long term change.Originally published in: Hartinger-Saunders, R. Observation and Numerical Simulation of Cavity Mode Oscillations Excited by an Interplanetary Shock

    No full text
Cavity mode oscillations (CMOs) are basic magnetohydrodynamic eigenmodes in the magnetosphere predicted by theory and are expected to occur following the arrival of an interplanetary shock. However, observational studies of shock-induced CMOs have been sparse. We present a case study of a dayside ultra-low-frequency (ULF) wave event that exhibited CMO properties. The event occurred immediately following the arrival of an interplanetary shock at 0829 UT on 15 August 2015. The shock was observed in the solar wind by the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms-B and -C spacecraft, and magnetospheric ULF waves were observed by multiple spacecraft including the Van Allen Probes-A and -B spacecraft, which were located in the dayside plasmasphere at L∼ 1.4 and L∼ 2.4, respectively. Both Van Allen Probes spacecraft detected compressional poloidal mode oscillations at ∼13 mHz (fundamental) and ∼26 mHz (second harmonic). At both frequencies, the azimuthal component of the electric field (Eφ) lagged behind the compressional component of the magnetic field (Bμ) by ∼90∘. The frequencies and the Eφ-Bμ relative phase are in good agreement with the CMOs generated in a dipole magnetohydrodynamic simulation that incorporates a realistic plasma mass density distribution and ionospheric boundary condition. The oscillations were also detected on the ground by the European quasi-Meridional Magnetometer Array, which was located near the magnetic field footprints of the Van Allen Probes spacecraft

Of the silmarils and the ring: J. R. R. Tolkien\u27s fiction and the importance of creation and art

    Get PDF
    J. R. R. Tolkien embodies the opposing ideals of Enchantment and the Machine in the Silmarils and the One Ring respectively. These created objects oppose each other just as Tolkien’s ideals of art do. Enchantment is art’s ideal, it\u27s purpose is to glorify and enrich the beauty of reality through subcreation. The Silmarils exhibit the delight of making and perceiving beauty. Whereas the Machine is art’s shadowy reflection that utilizes apparatuses or devices rather than personal talent in order to coerce others and reality itself. Overall Tolkien\u27s aesthetic theories reflect many fears surrounding modern attitudes toward weaponizing art. Tolkien supplies Enchantment as the solution to these problems surrounding art and creativity in an oppressively technological world

The aim of this bachelor thesis is performing a financial analysis of the company Mubea, spol. s r. o. for the period 2012-2016. The thesis is divided into two parts. The financial analysis and its methods and tools are introduced in the methodical part. In the practical part these methods are then applied for the financial analysis of the company and its results are compared with competitors and industry sector. Towards the end of the thesis the financial health of the company is also evaluated using credit scoring and bankruptcy models.Cílem této práce je zpracování finanční analýzy podniku Mubea, spol. s r. o. za období 2012-2016.
