Student Grades and Evaluations of Teaching: A Survey Experiment
Over time, student evaluations of teaching (SETs) have gained increased significance for all who participate in either instructing or receiving a college education. This study aims to analyze what attributes students value the most when completing SETs, and to evaluate the importance of grades on students’ evaluations relative to other instructor and course characteristics. Data for the study was collected through an online survey of 281 students at Texas Tech University during the 2020-2021 academic year. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis are used to analyze the data. The variable that the regression analysis showed students value the most was expected grade. Other attributes show to have a relatively smaller effect on the outcomes of SETs. The relevance of knowing how course and instructor characteristics can affect SETs could highly benefit institutions when assessing the validity of the surveys.Embargo status: Restricted until 09/2024. Collaborative Music Making with Live Algorithms
All Copyright remains with the author © Copyright 2007This paper discusses developments of ENSEMBLE, an interactive improvisation environment based on the Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma. The main emphasis of this paper is on the interactive version of ENSEMBLE, and its development for the work ‘fr@gm3nT’ [fragment], a collaboration between the author and saxophonist Derek Pascoe. Some of the lessons learned from non real-time, generative versions of ENSEMBLE are also discussed, along with the implications of the approach for algorithmic composition and live interactive computer music performance.Luke Harral

Artificial Life: model for musical innovation
Copyright (c) 2003 UNSW. Copyright with the author © Copyright 2003Since Pythagoras, music has been a vehicle for the physical realisation of abstract scientific principles. Algorithmic composition is as old as music composition (Jacob 1996), and a more recent development in this field has involved the use of composition methods based on Artificial Life This paper presents a discussion on existing composition systems, exploring both the problems faced by system designers, and how differences in the composer’s philosophy and approach ultimately have an effect on the possibility of creating innovative music. The author’s own system will also be discussed in detail with a focus on the composition of two works; ælife for Orchestra, and Fight or Flight (the prisoner’s dilemma) for percussion ensemble. The two works presented show how the system is modified to answer specific problems which arise when composing different works.Luke Harral
