Gregorio Sancianco, Colonial Tribute, and Social Identities: On the Cusp of Filipino Nationalist Consciousness

    No full text
Gregorio Sancianco, the author of El Progreso de Filipinas (1881), is an ephemeral figure in Philippine history. Although somewhat known for his defense of the native against charges of indolence, Sancianco advanced a penetrating critique of colonial tribute that generally has been ignored but to which this article draws attention. Sancianco argued that tribute did not only negate the principle of assimilation, but it also divided the native population and provoked social antagonisms. The tribute\u27s abolition in 1884 rendered Sancianco\u27s historical position as transitional, straddling the creole nationalism of the 1860s and the ilustrados\u27 colonial nationalism of the 1880s. Sancianco\u27s critique of tribute anticipated nationalist consciousness

    PFuji-Size dataset

The PFuji-Size dataset includes a total of 615 Fuji apples scanned in-field conditions and an additional 25 apples scanned in laboratory conditions. Structure-from-motion and multi-view stereo techniques were used to generate the 3D point clouds of the captured scene. Apple locations and ground truth diameter annotations are provided for assessing fruit detection and size estimation algorithms. The reader is referred to visit articles [1] and [2] for a description of methodology and further information about this dataset. This database is available only for research and educational purpose and not for any commercial use. Search of the early O3 LIGO data for continuous gravitational waves from the Cassiopeia A and Vela Jr. supernova remnants

    No full text
We present directed searches for continuous gravitational waves from the neutron stars in the Cassiopeia A (Cas A) and Vela Jr. supernova remnants. We carry out the searches in the LIGO data from the first six months of the third Advanced LIGO and Virgo observing run, using the Weave semi-coherent method, which sums matched-filter detection-statistic values over many time segments spanning the observation period. No gravitational wave signal is detected in the search band of 20-976 Hz for assumed source ages greater than 300 years for Cas A and greater than 700 years for Vela Jr. Estimates from simulated continuous wave signals indicate we achieve the most sensitive results to date across the explored parameter space volume, probing to strain magnitudes as low as ~6.3×10−26 for Cas A and ~5.6×10−26 for Vela Jr. at frequencies near 166 Hz at 95% efficiency

Isang feministang pagbasa kay B.S. Medina, Jr.

This study aims to find out the attitude of the Filipino fiction writer, Dr. Buenaventura S. Medina, Jr. towards women through his writings. Among his writings included in this study are two of his novels (Alaga and Moog), a collection of short stories (Fifties), two collection of essays (Ang Tao sa Kwadro and Pintig), and a collection of his prize winning works (Gantimpala). In order to examine Medina\u27s feminist views, the following questions were poised:What is the role of women characters in Medina\u27s novels and short stories? How did Medina use the image of women (or of woman) in her relations with other character roles, particularly, male roles? How did Medina use language (or words) in describing women as they think, say, act?How does Medina view women in his translating work?In his presentation of findings, the author made the following observations:In Medina\u27s novels, his women characters are under the power of his men characters. In his essays, Medina views women as meek, weak, and beautiful they serve only to answer mens\u27 needs and to please society\u27s dictates.Medina\u27s women roles are confined to wifely duties such as conceiving and giving birth, cleaning, cooking, caring for husband and children, waiting for her destiny, whether in life or in love.In his translation works, Medina favored male themes. He paid very little attention to women, their experiences, thoughts, and ways of life. If Medina as a writer of influence can manipulate the mind of this readers, his views on women can certainly influence their thinking. His image of women as weak, emotional, docile, and unempowered speaks of his sexist attitude against women. On the other hand, his male characterization gives the impression that he favors men and all that his masculine image projects.Based on his work, the author recommends more psychoanalytic studies into the writings of B.S. Medina in support of his theory, and further studies on Medina as a literary critic-scholar. Other recommendations include a complete listing of his works in such libraries as The National Library, and those of UP, Ateneo and De La Salle University the holding of an extensive interview of the writer for a better understanding of his works, and the inclusion of this writings among the required course readings in class to enable young readers to appreciate his works

Governance of public pension funds : lessons from corporate governance and international evidence

    No full text
An understanding of corporate governance theory can promote the adoption of appropriate governance tools to limit agency problems in public pension fund management. The absence of a market for corporate control hinders the translation of lessons from the private sector corporate world to public pension governance. The establishment of a fit, and proper governing body for public pension funds, thus may be even more important than the maintenance of a comparable body for private sector corporations. In particular, behavioral controls should be carefully designed.Economic Theory&Research,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Decentralization,Payment Systems&Infrastructure,Banks&Banking Reform,Municipal Financial Management,National Governance,Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Banks&Banking Reform

Insights from the farm forestry tree seedling nursery sector in Western Java, Indonesia

    No full text
This paper reports observations of a study tour by the authors of the farm forestry tree seeding nursery sector in Western Java, Indonesia. Industry stakeholders were found to recognise and value high quality germplasm and seedling quality for commercial farm forestry success. These quality preferences of stakeholders are supported by the use of a simple tree seedling certification scheme through which certified seedlings receive a premium selling price. Other initiatives, including government extension efforts, tree seed centres and vegetative propagation, provide complementary support for the preference and promotion of high seedling quality in the Western Java farm forestry indust
