Synchronization of a WDM Packet-Switched Slotted Ring
In this paper, we present two different strategies of
slot synchronization in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM)
packet-switched slotted-ring networks. Emphasis is given to the
architecture behind the WDM Optical Network Demonstrator
over Rings (WONDER) project, which is based on tunable
transmitters and fixed receivers. The WONDER experimental
prototype is currently being developed at the laboratories
of Politecnico di Torino. In the former strategy, a slotsynchronization
signal is transmitted by the master station on a
dedicated control wavelength; in the latter, slave nodes achieve
slot synchronization aligning on data packets that are received
from the master. The performance of both synchronization strategies,
particularly in terms of packet-collision probability, was
evaluated by simulation. The technique based on transmitting a
timing signal on a dedicated control wavelength achieves better
performance, although it is more expensive due to the need for an
additional wavelength. However, the technique based on aligning
data packets that are received from the master, despite attaining
lower timing stability, still deserves further study, particularly
if limiting the number of wavelengths and receivers is a major
requirement. Some experimental results, which were measured on
the WONDER prototype, are also shown. Measurement results,
together with theoretical findings, demonstrate the good synchronization
performance of the prototype

Settembre 2024: Affrontare le Sfide della Salute degli Adolescenti
Cari lettori,
Malattie Croniche e Adolescenza

Do all roads lead to rome? Critical reassessment of the individual patient meta-analysis on bypass grafts by gaudino et al.
INTRODUCTION
The recent individual patient data meta-analysis by Gaudino et al. [1], comparing outcomes with different grafts for coronary artery surgery from not for this question-randomized trials, was met with questions on the methodology given that some of the results proved controversial.
The EJCTS reacted to various comments on the methodology and suggested an independent reanalysis of the data. The author group of the paper, led by Mario Gaudino, should be applauded for their scientifically sound cooperation in this exercise. In the spirit of open data and open science, the authors shared their entire dataset and the codes with the journal. The authors of this Editorial wish to express their gratitude and esteem for this behaviour, which exemplifies excellence in science.
The journal was particularly keen to have this process initiated because the topic is important, and the main players have considerable expertise in CABG research and statistics
Recent Results From the EU POF-PLUS Project: Multi-Gigabit Transmission Over 1 mm Core Diameter Plastic Optical Fibers
Recent activity to achieve multi-gigabit transmission over 1 mm core diameter graded-index and step-index plastic optical fibers for distances up to 50 meters is reported in this paper. By employing a simple intensity-modulated direct-detection system with pulse amplitude or digital multi-tone modulation techniques, low-cost transceivers and easy to install large-core POFs, it is demonstrated that multi-gigabit transmission up to 10 Gbit/s over 1-mm core diameter POF infrastructure is feasible. The results presented in this paper were obtained in the EU FP7 POF-PLUS project, which focused on applications in different scenarios, such as in next-generation in-building residential networks and in datacom applications
Sensitivity and scaling laws of unamplified coherent architectures for intra-data center links beyond 100 gb/s
We present an analytical model that allows predicting the performance of a coherent receiver in an optical amplification-free data transmission over distances of the order of a few kilometres, typical of intradata center communications. The model includes noise contributions from the local oscillator intrinsic RIN, shot noise, thermal noise and the impact of receiver parameters such as the common mode rejection ratio, overall responsivity and bandwidth. Our findings highlight the possibility for coherent detection to be used in short-reach communications, with achievable power budgets well within the limit represented by the maximum admissible optical attenuation for these systems. We use our model to predict scaling laws toward higher bit rate

Optimal dimensioning of the 5G optical fronthaulings for providing ultra-high bit rates in small-cell, micro-cell and femto-cell deployments
In this work we employ the Optimal Topology Search (OTS) algorithm in order to perform an accurate techno-economic analysis of the optimal deployment of 5G networks in large urban areas based on two significant variables: the size of the cells, sweeping sizes from small-cells up to femto-cells, and the bitrate per user, considering bitrates ranging from high up to ultra-high bandwidth access. Results show that the femto-cell solution is the best option for providing ultra-high bit rate access to the users
