This video is a presentation from Professor Marco Falcone from the University Hospital Pisa, Italy, originally presented at the BSAC conference 'Into clinical practice: Meeting the challenges of Gram-negative infection management' on 14 October 2020. Professor Falcone highlights the cefiderocol compassionate use case series that has been published in Clinical Infectious Diseases (Falcone M, Tiseo G, Nicastro M et al. Cefiderocol as rescue therapy for Acinetobacter baumannii and other carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative infections in intensive care unit patients. Clin Infect Dis 2020; doi: 10.1093/cid/ciaa1410)

    Chromoelectric flux tubes in QCD

Cardaci MS, Cea P, Cosmai L, Falcone R, Papa A. Chromoelectric flux tubes in QCD. Physical Review D. 2011;83(1): 014502.We analyze the distribution of the chromoelectric field generated by a static quark-antiquark pair in the SU(3) vacuum and revisit previous results for SU(2). We find that the transverse profile of the flux tube resembles the dual version of the Abrikosov vortex field distribution. We give an estimate of the London penetration length of the chromoelectric field in the confined vacuum. We also speculate on the value of the ratio between the penetration lengths for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories

    De falcone Bartolusa de Saxoferrato

De falcone of Bartolus de SaxoferratoAmong the numerous texts by the famous Italian jurist Bartolus de Saxoferrato there is a short letter entitled tractatus de falcone — treaty of the falcon. Despite its name, it is neither a work about the issue of hunting with birds of prey, nor a letter exhausting the literary form of a treaty. Although Diplovatatius described it as consilium, it should be rather classified as quaestiones. It should be emphasized that the distinction of consilium, that is a legal advice drew up to consider the specific case from quaestio, theoretical analysis of some case, may be impossible. The more so that the basis for quaestiones were often genuine judicial cases, which were only changed with regards to identifying the parties and adjusting the case to the needs of teaching. The author made a translation of de falcone and added her own commentary. De falcone of Bartolus de SaxoferratoAmong the numerous texts by the famous Italian jurist Bartolus de Saxoferrato there is a short letter entitled tractatus de falcone — treaty of the falcon. Reduced level of the histone deacetylase Sir2 in mRNA decapping mutants leads to silencing defects and premature aging

    No full text
RNA metabolism directly or indirectly impacts various cellular pathways. Mutations in factors involved in mRNA decapping result in phenotypic markers of apoptosis and lead to premature aging. These traits are accompanied by elevated histone mRNA levels persisting throughout the cell cycle and defects in S-phase progression. Here we show that decapping mutants exhibit low levels of Sir2, which reduces silencing and leads to the elevated transcription of rDNA intergenic spacer regions. We postulate that defects in decapping are associated with the derepression of silencing at heterochromatic-like regions. This, in turn, may affect histone modification and induce loss of silencing at specific loci, as well as recombination within rDNA repeats, both of which have been shown to regulate cellular lifespan. Endowing robots with self-modeling abilities for trustful human-robot interactions

    No full text
Robots involved in collaborative and cooperative tasks with humans cannot be programmed in all their functions. They are autonomous entities acting in a dynamic and often partially known environment. How to interact with the humans and the decision process are determined by the knowledge on the environment, on the other and on itself. Also, the level of trust that each member of the team places in the other is crucial to creating a fruitful collaborative relationship. We hypothesize that one of the main components of a trustful relationship resides in the self-modeling abilities of the robot. The paper illustrates how employing the model of trust by Falcone and Castelfranchi to include self-modeling skills in the NAO humanoid robot involved in trustworthy interactions. Self-modeling skills are then implemented employing features by the BDI paradigm

    A spinorial decomposition of gl_4(R)

We determine six invariant subspaces of the 16-dimensional space gl_4(R) under the conjugation by any element in Spin_3(R). Four of them add up to the 10-dimensional space of symmetric matrices and the other two add up to the 6-dimensional space of skew-symmetric matrices

A semi-Lagrangian scheme for the curve shortening flow in codimension 2

    No full text
We consider the model problem where a curve in R^3 moves according to the mean curvature flow (the curve shortening flow). We construct a semi-Lagrangian scheme based on the Feynman–Kac representation formula of the solutions of the related level set geometric equation. The first step is to obtain an approximation of the associated codimension-1 problem formulated by Ambrosio and Soner, where the squared distance from the initial curve is used as initial condition. Since the e-sublevel of this evolution contains the curve, the next step is to extract the curve itself by following an optimal trajectory inside each e-sublevel. We show that this procedure is robust and accurate as long as the ‘‘fattening’’ phenomenon does not occur. Moreover, it can still single out the physically meaningful solution when it occurs
