Control mechanisms and knowledge integration in R&D project teams. A case study from the coal fired power plant industry
The focus of the analysis is on a firm that manufactures special conveyors for hot and abrasive material, applied in particular in power generation plants. Internal production processes in such company must be constantly sustained with a strong researchendeavour, in order to develop continuously new products to be patented, that can meet customers requirements. The aim is to analyse how the organizational control mechanisms adopted withinproject teams in R&D settings influence the effectiveness of knowledge integration processes

Industrial cyber-physical systems protection: A methodological review
Ubiquitous utilization of Information and Communication Technologies in modern manufacturing plants has transformed them into Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), making them susceptible to cyber-attacks, which can have huge economic and social impact. In this paper, we focus on the security issues that may affect the Industrial Control System (ICS) supervising an industrial establishment. The purpose of this work is to provide readers with an up-to-date view of the methodologies that current literature suggests as the most appropriate to defend an ICS against cyber-attacks. We firstly provide a classification of existing attacks according to the methodology used by the attacker. Subsequently, we propose a classification of defensive countermeasures in Model and Artificial Intelligence-based approaches by analyzing most recent research contributions. Furthermore, we describe the most used datasets in literature that are available to researchers and practitioners. We conclude the paper by discussing today's open issues, which need to be addressed to cope with the increasing complexity of ICS security
AN XML DESCRIPTION LANGUAGE FOR WEB-BASED NETWORK SIMULATION
Simulation of large scale network scenarios is a challenging task and requires a great amount of computational power. Hence, realizing Web-accessible simulation servers is a key step for the success of network simulation as a useful instrument in the context of network administration and capacity planning. This paper presents an XML-based description language for describing network simulation scenarios. For the proposed language, we also present an XSL translation process that can be used to automatically translate a simulation scenario into a simulation script for a well known network simulator. This work is part of a larger project, aimed at implementing a cluster-based network simulation server to be integrated in a distributed system for QoS monitoring, SLA validation and measurement-based modeling in an inter-domain environment
EXTENDED NAM: AN NS2 COMPATIBLE NETWORK TOPOLOGY EDITOR FOR SIMULATION OF WEB CACHING SYSTEMS ON LARGE NETWORK TOPOLOGIES
Designing new network protocols for the Internet relies on the use of network simulation tools for validation. When simulation is aimed at testing the scalability of new protocols, working with large-scale realistic topologies is of paramount importance. In this paper we present an extension of the NAM Editor, a graphical editor to be used in conjunction with the well-known ns2 network simulator. Our extended NAM Editor allows the creation of synthetic but realistic network simulation scenarios and provides support for the simulation of web caching systems
Sutureless tension-free hernia repair with Human Fibrin Glue in soccer players with chronic inguinal pain: initial experience
Abstract. Chronic groin pain is a common symptom experienced by soccer players, resulting in many athletes undergoing prolonged periods of conservative treatment. In a high proportion of these cases, however, the cause of groin pain is due to impalpable hernias, thus nullifying the usefulness of a conservative approach. Of the current surgical procedures for inguinal hernia repair, the Lichtenstein technique is widely used. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of mesh fixation with human fibrin glue (Tissucol) in open, tension-free inguinal repair, in the treatment of soccer players with groin hernia. A sutureless Lichtenstein technique was employed in 16 consecutive soccer players with primary groin hernia. Inguinal nerves were prepared and preserved. Human fibrin glue was used for mesh fixation, in place of conventional sutures. Results were rated as excellent in all cases, with no reported intra- or postoperative complications. All patients were discharged 4 - 5 h after the operation, and all returned to full pre-injury level sporting-activity, on average, 31 days (range 24 - 42 days) post surgery. This study confirms the efficacy of sutureless tension-free hernia repair with human fibrin glue for the treatment of soccer players suffering from chronic groin pain due to impalpable groin hernia
R&D project teams: control mechanisms and knowledge integration practices
The purpose of the paper is to analyse how the organizational control mechanisms adopted within project teams in R&D settings influence the effectiveness of knowledge integration processes. In our research we analysed the functioning of project teams within an organization operating in the industry of turn-key devices for power plants. Our unit of analysis is the project team, a setting where it is possible to identify the presence of knowledge integration practices (Fong, 2004; Huang and Newell, 2003) and the implementation of control mechanisms (Clegg, Courpasson, 2004).
The concept of knowledge integration practices refers to the joint exploitation of distributed knowledge in a way which permits the access to, and utilisation of, individuals’ specialised knowledge in undertaking a collective effort (Enberg, 2007). The project team is a highly specialized knowledge setting where people with different competencies work together in order to get to a common goal
