The Survival and Success of Canadian Penny Stock IPOs

No full text
We analyze the survival and success of a large sample of Canadian penny stock initial public offerings (IPOs), launched mostly by small and unprofitable firms from 1986 to 2003. The failure rate of these IPOs is lower than the one observed in the U.S. for larger IPOs, probably because of lax delisting rules and the market’s capacity to refinance non-profitable firms. The survival of new issuers is significantly associated with their characteristics at the IPO and with the level of initial listing requirement they meet. The involvement of reputable intermediaries in the IPO process mitigates this effect. Success, estimated by the graduation to a senior exchange, is not linked to the financial conditions at the IPO. Overall, Canada seems to have developed a particular strategy to finance the growth of small firms even if the propensity to fail of firms listed at a pre-revenue stage is indeed very high.

Penny-shaped crack propagation in spallation of Zr-BMGs

No full text
Typical penny-shaped microcracks at their propagating in spallation of Zr-based bulk metallic glass (Zr-BMG) samples were captured by a specially designed plate impact technique. Based on the morphology and stress environment of the microcrack, a damaged zone or propagation zone around the crack tips, similar to the cohesive zone in classical fracture theories, is applied. Especially the scale of such a damaged zone represents a scale of the crack propagation. Its fast propagation would quickly bring a longer crack or cause cracks coalesce to form another longer one. The estimated propagation scales of microcracks are reasonable compared with what occurred in the Zr-BMG samples

Impact of Penny Brohn UK’s Living Well course on informal caregivers of people with cancer

Objectives: This study evaluated the change in the concerns, wellbeing and lifestyle behaviours of informal caregivers of people with cancer attending Penny Brohn UK’s Living Well Course (LWC), a self-management education intervention. Design: A pre-post-course design collected self-reported quantitative and qualitative data from informal caregivers attending a LWC. Setting/Location: Penny Brohn UK is a UK based charity (not-for-profit) providing specialist integrative, whole person support, free of charge, to people affected by cancer. Subjects: Informal caregivers taking part in a Penny Brohn UK LWC between June 2014 and May 2016 attending alongside the person with cancer. Intervention: The LWC is a structured 15 hour, multi-modal group self-management educational course, designed to help people affected by cancer learn tools and techniques to help build resilience. Trained facilitators deliver LWCs to around 12 people with various types and stages of cancer, and their informal caregivers. Outcome measures: MYCaW (Measure Yourself Concern and Wellbeing) completed pre-course and at 6 weeks post-course; and bespoke 6 week follow up Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM). Results: 480 informal caregivers attended a LWC June 2014 to May 2016. 118 completed a 6 week follow up MYCaW: MYCaW Concerns 1 and 2 showed statistically significant improvements (p<.0001), there was no significant improvement in wellbeing. Informal caregivers’ most reported concerns relating to themselves were psychological and emotional issues (59%). The primary concern of the caregiver for the care recipient was related to the physical health of the person with cancer (40%). 87% of responding informal caregivers stated the LWC enabled health self-management. Conclusions: The LWC was followed by an improvement in informal caregivers’ concerns, and increased self-management of their own health needs. More studies, with larger sample size, are needed to explore if better self-management by informal caregivers may also lead to improvements in patients’ health and wellbeing

Further validation of the Penny Beliefs Scale – Weapons

The Penny Beliefs Scale - Weapons (PBS-W) comprises of 36 items that measure young people's beliefs about carrying and using weapons. It was designed to facilitate our understanding of weapons carrying and use. The PBS-W has excellent internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha of .92), extremely good test-retest consistency (ICC = .83) and is significantly positively correlated with self-reported delinquency. In order to further demonstrate the utility of the PBS-W it was compared with other measures that would be expected to be associated with weapons carrying and use. The PBS-W, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-R-SV), the Maudsley Violence Questionnaire (MVQ), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), and the Brief Measure of Sensation Seeking (SS2) were administered to 189 school pupils in South Wales, aged between 16 and 18 years. Results demonstrated that the PBS-W is significantly positively correlated with EPQ Psychoticism (P), violent cognitions, impulsivity, and sensation seeking. Multiple regressions, controlling for gender and impression management (EPQ-Lie), showed that violent cognitions predicted beliefs about carrying and using weapons above and beyond P. sensation seeking and impulsivity. These findings suggest that violent cognitions are the single most powerful predictors of positive beliefs about carrying and using weapons. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Colonic expression of leukotriene-pathway enzymes in inflammatory bowel diseases

No full text
BACKGROUND: Leukotrienes derived from the 5-lipoxygenase pathway are proinflammatory lipid mediators that possibly play a role in inflammatory bowel diseases. The expression of 5-lipoxygenase pathway proteins has not previously been examined in colonic mucosa in inflammatory bowel disease. RESULTS: Quantitative immunohistochemical analyses showed that, compared to those of the control subjects (n = 9), colonic biopsies from patients with active inflammatory bowel disease (n = 17) had 3- to 7-fold higher mean counts of cells expressing 5-lipoxygenase (P = 0.03), 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (P = 0.005), and the leukotriene A(4) hydrolase (P = 0.004), which make up the biosynthetic pathway of the potent neutrophil chemotaxin leukotriene B(4). Immunoexpression of the leukotriene C(4) synthase was unaltered (P > 0.2). The increased representation of leukotriene B(4)-pathway enzymes was associated with higher counts of neutrophils (P = 0.0001), macrophages (P = 0.03), eosinophils (P = 0.0004), CD8(+) T cells (P 0.9). These eicosanoid and cellular changes were most marked in the subgroup of patients with ulcerative colitis (n = 9), and were absent in patients with quiescent disease (n = 6). The anomalies in the 5-lipoxygenase pathway were accompanied as expected by more cells immunostaining for cytokine-inducible COX-2 (P = 0.004, n = 17), but this study also revealed a greater number of cells expressing COX-1 in the samples from the patients in the ulcerative colitis subgroup (P = 0.03, n = 9). CONCLUSIONS: The 5-lipoxygenase data provide a cellular basis for increased tissue synthesis of the leukotriene B(4), as reflected in the colonic mucosa and rectal dialysates of patients with active inflammatory bowel disease, which contributes to neutrophil influx and colonic injury. The COX-1/COX-2 data highlight the ambiguous functional role of prostanoid pathways in inflammatory bowel diseases

Rounding is not to be feared

No full text
Nearly one and a half years have elapsed since the MNB withdrew 1- and 2-forint coins from circulation on 1 March 2008, which simultaneously saw the rule on rounding to the nearest value of 5 enter into force. While it was perfectly clear from a professional perspective that rounding would make cash payments easier on a daily basis, there was nevertheless strong concern surrounding the introduction of rounding. The actual developments, however, have not underpinned preliminary fears. The withdrawal of 1-and 2-forint coins did not bring about an inflationary effect, due to the symmetrical direction of the rounding for final amounts payable only, and the application of new rounding rules did not cause any particular difficulties. It does not come as a surprise that the use of rounding did not cause any disruption in the economy, as rounding has a more than decadelong tradition in Hungary on account of the withdrawal of the filler in the 1990s. In this article, we will present the reasons and the economic rationale behind the introduction of rounding rules with the help of Hungarian and numerous foreign practices. As Hungary’s legal tender will hopefully be the euro within a few years, the experiences of euro area countries in the practice of rounding will be examined more closely.rounding rule, withdrawal small change, elimination small denomination coins, 1- and 2-forint coins, filler, 1- and 2-cent coins, penny.

Meeting and merging: painting animal/human encounters with medicine

No full text
My work focuses on the expressive potential of medicinal remedies as a medium for painting. My exploration is concentrated on aspects of the human relationship to animals in captivity and stems from a relationship I had with a caged bear when I was living in Georgia, Eastern Europe in 2011. The story of my encounter with the bear is important in this respect and I begin my text with that narrative, written in the third person so that the story has a wider resonance. My time with the bear affected me profoundly and prompted me to think more deeply about human relationships with animals and how they are expressed in contemporary art
