Covariance properties of higher genus twist correlators under R↔ 1 R durability in orbifold conformal field theory
No full textWe study R↔ 1 R duality in simple orbifold models at arbitrary orders in string perturbation theory. It is shown that duality involves certain linear relations among twist correlators at dual radii. We derive general expressions for the coefficients of these relations and show that they can be expressed in terms of functions of the orbifold cosets obeying an algebra bearing a striking resemblance to Verlinde's fusion rule algebra. Finally, we study the behavior of the coefficients under factorization, in particular their dependence on the genus. A few examples are worked out. © 1990

No full textEl autor explora el efecto poético, en el caso de los vanguardistas peruanos, que tiene la inclusión de palabras extranjeras en un texto literario. Puesto que se trata de palabras ininteligibles o apenas inteligibles, tal uso remite al tipo de afasia como desorden del eje metafórico, que afecta la similitud/diferencia del lenguaje. Lauer se pregunta por qué los poetas vanguardistas recurrieron al uso de palabras de origen extranjero. En este sentido, interesa al autor destacar los cruces entre modernidad, “tecno terminología” y “extranjería del discurso”, entre cosmopolitismo y conocimiento local. Sostiene Lauer que adoptar una palabra de otro idioma “expresa el deseo de cortar con las fuentes mismas de una tradición, y constituye una crítica a una sensibilidad dada”. El autor indaga en torno a los usos poéticos de palabras de origen extranjero, desde una visión que atiende los sentidos que ellas despliegan, así como también sus aspectos gráficos, sonoros y comunicacionales.The author explores the poetic effect that has the inclusion of foreign words in a literary text in the case of the Peruvian vanguard writers. Since they are unintelligible or barely intelligible words, their usage refers us to the type of aphasia that comes from a disorder in the metaphoric axis, which affects the similarity/difference of language. Lauer reflects on why the vanguard poets resorted to the use of foreign words. In this sense, he is interested in highlighting the overlapping among modernity, “techno terminology” and “foreignicity of discourse”, and between cosmopolitanism and local knowledge. Lauer holds that taking on a word from another language “expresses the desire of severing from the sources of a tradition, and is a criticism to a given sensitivity”. The author reflects about the poetic uses of foreign words from a point of view that focuses on the senses they unfold, as well as the graphic, sound, and communicational aspects

Healing of complex damage modes in model composites
No full textSelf-healing has potential to extend the usable lifetime of composite materials. Introducing self-healing systems to fiber reinforced composites has proven to be difficult due to the high temperatures and pressures of processing as well as the requirement that the delivery scheme for the healing agent must exist in the interstitial regions between fibers. Additionally, assessment of self-healing performance for composites poses a challenge as many damage modes occur during composite failure including matrix cracking and fiber-matrix debonding.
In this thesis, a tow-level model composite test is developed with a view towards simplifying characterization and improving understanding of capsule-based self-healing in fiber reinforced composites. The tow-level test is intended to allow for testing of potential healing without requiring manufacture of a complex composite panel. A modified compact tension is developed with a carbon fiber tow running orthogonally to the advancing crack plane. Initial testing of a non-healing control system reveals that the tow can survive crack propagation and that debonding of the matrix and tow occurs. Additionally, the size of the debonding damage correlates to the magnitude of energy released.
Healing studies utilized a phase-separated thermoplastic-epoxy matrix with solvent filled microcapsules. Initial reference tests with the matrix but no microcapsules showed high healing efficiency of over 100% when the solvent was injected manually. However, no mechanical healing response could be observed when microcapsules were incorporated to deliver healing agent to the crack. Attempts were made at altering the healing agent delivery scheme as well as the healing conditions to increase healing response, but no combination of conditions was shown to be suitable for self-healing to occur.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'.
