Five Easy Pieces dedicated to Ludovico Quaroni
The first edition of this book was published in Italian in 1989, about two years after the death of Ludovico Quaroni; this edition in English is addressed mainly to non-Italian scholars with an interest in modern architecture in Italy. Given the imperfect parallel between musical and literary composition, therefore, in this book an intimate intellectual atmosphere prevails, which reveals the author’s skill in creating a narrative and also in engaging in a type of critical writing that is rarely undertaken by architect-intellectuals. The five episodes in the book cover almost thirty years, from 1958 to 1987, which were years that remained deeply preserved in the author’s memory. The literary form of the pieces gives all of them a common structure: they are dialogues; usually consisting of brief exchanges of few words, spoken or written, between the author (Lucio Barbera) and Quaroni. In one of them – Charisma – the dialogue takes place between Quaroni and a larger chorus. In another – Elective Misunderstanding – we have a double dialogue at a distance, a trio, if we return to the musical metaphor, between Quaroni, Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso and Barbera. The last piece is a longer conversation by Quaroni on himself; a taking stock and a valediction. On the frontispiece, Barbera gives a clear indication of his intentions: “For students of Architecture who are well-educated and for architects interested in getting to know better a Master of their trade”
The paper, introduced by Mariarosaria Barbera, aims to present the set of activities of protection and enhancement of the historical heritage promoted by the Archaeological Park of ancient Ostia, an institution also engaged in the delicate task of coordinating international scientific research. The next part deepens the themes of urban history inspired by the investigations of the Ostia Marina Project, archaeological mission of the University of Bologna working in ancient Ostia since 2007. The first section, by Massimiliano David, focuses on the settlement, on the base of the archaeological deposit documented by the excavations carried out in the area of the maritime
district of the city. During the second century C.E. this suburban area assumed the role, by direct initiative of the emperor Hadrian, of a centre of thermal wellness and became the setting of the Minucius Felix’s “Octavius”. A structural failure of this functional arrangement has to be found about one hundred and fifty years later, in the Theodosian era. The second section, by Francesca Romana Stasolla, discusses the methods of economic exploitation of the dead city since the Eleventh century. In a desolate landscape of ruins, well-organized workplaces were opened to obtain marbles and works of art for the antiquarian market
Introduzione all'itinerario di ricerca su Giusta transizione ecologica, impresa e lavoro
Italy represents one of the most suitable
environment for fruit trees and vines and since the origin
of their domestication and introduction in extremely
varying environments, depending on the species
adaptability and local culture, a complex mosaic of
landscapes has been originated by Nature, farmers or
gardeners. In the study of the landscape it must be
considered that the relationship between fruit trees or
vines and landscapes represents a precious aspect of
the Italian culture and has been studied by History,
represented in Art and Literature, analyzed by science
like Architecture and Agronomy, but at first has been
created by Agriculture. Owing to the evolution of the
relationship land and farmers, the development of
agricultural practices, the change of marked requirements
and objectives, different agricultural landscapes
have been created, each having an unique
meaning and functions. Nonetheless, the physiognomy
of tree cropping systems has changed rapidly
starting from half of the past century because of the
introduction of new genetic resources, the change in
the meaning of the product’s quality, the industrialization
of the agronomic technique. These recent developments
have turned out in loss of landscape diversity,
biodiversity erosion, environment resources depletion.
The actual physiognomy of the Italian countryside,
from the plan to the most represented mountain
areas, is characterized by modern and traditional agricultural
landscapes, not even distinguished, frequently
overlaid. They represent the “forms” of the today’s
arboriculture visible in the historic and contemporary
gardens, in the remnants of the coltura promiscua, in
the polycultural growing systems, as well as in the
specialized orchards. The contemporary landscape of
fruit trees and vines witnesses its history, characters
and functions particularly in terms of biological and
environmental diversity maintenance. This review is
focused on the traditional fruit tree and vine’s landscapes
still well rooted in the Italian agricultural landscape,
but differently conserved, managed and perceived.
The aim of the historical excursus is to go
through their development phases and to underline
the changing functions. A survey of the multifunctionality
recognisable in the traditional agricultural landscape,
in particular their role in the preservation of
environmental resources, agro-ecosystems functionality,
landscape diversity and cultural memory justifies
the interest in the preservation and valorisation of
these productive landscapes and of the traditional
agricultural techniques, thank to which they are maintained.
The preserving strategies adopted in the
European countries as well as the modern study
approaches based on multidisciplinary methodologies
are also analysed
Zein-based thermo-reversible films for flexible electronics
In recent years, the need for more circular and sustainable electronics has promoted the research into printed solutions. The increasing interest in flexible electronics pushed through solutions that adapt to human testing, such as wearable electronics, health trackers, motion sensors, etc. The most commonly used materials, such as polyimide, polytetrafluoroethylene, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), fluoropolymers, polyolefin and silicone rubber, have a crucial role in achieving the flexibility of electronic devices thanks to their remarkable mechanical characteristics. These oil-based solutions show notable critical issues, such as access to raw materials, complexity of the synthesis phases, environmental impact during production, degradation into toxic products, disposal of end-of-life devices. Hence, the use of environmentally friendly, recyclable, and sustainable materials, from printed circuit boards to electrical circuit elements, has enormous low-impact and “green” potential, offering the possibility of minimizing the future environmental impact of electronics. [1]
Biobased materials are considered the most promising candidates for next-generation flexible electronics because of their high sustainability. Proteins are intriguing biobased polymers to be considered for the development of flexible electronic devices, for several reasons: they can be taken from waste, in large amount, they offer a variety of chemical structure, they can be depolymerized and recycled to monomers.
In this work, zein was selected as the staring protein, and flexible films were developed. The proteome of zein was first determined through LTQ XL mass spectrometer. After this evaluation, the chemical modifications were designed as a function of the final application. Two routes were explored: (i) the tuning of the sulphur based crosslink network, (ii) the derivatization with new functionalities (Figure 1).
The breaking and restoring of sulfur bridges allows the macromolecule to have the same primary
chemical sequence but a different secondary structure. This strategy, named the RES method, offers
the possibility of achieving improved mechanical properties while maintaining the chemical structure.
The chemical modification was instead performed on the native protein by reacting oxygen- and
nitrogen-based functional groups with properly prepared dienes able to react through the Diels-Alder
reaction. The so-obtained diene-enriched zein derivatives were able to be reversibly crosslinked with
dienophiles by simply heating the mixture. The cross-linked films are the basis of superior mechanical
properties such as high modulus, high fracture robustness, and resistance to solvents. The reversibility
was checked through the retro-diels alder reaction. [2,3]
The samples were characterized by DSC, FT-IR, and NMR analysis. In addition to the mechanical
properties, molecular dynamics studies were performed. They made it possible to understand the
reorganization of the protein as a function of the chemical modifications.
