Economic Benefits of Waste Pickling Solution Valorization
An integrated hybrid membrane process, composed of a diffusion dialysis (DD), a membrane distillation (MD) and a reactive precipitation unit (CSTR), is proposed as a promising solution for the valorization and onsite recycling of pickling waste streams. An economic analysis was performed aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of the developed process with a NPV of about EUR 40,000 and a DPBP of 4 years. The investment and operating costs, as well as the avoided costs and the benefits for the company operating the plant, were analyzed with an extensive cost tracking exercise and through face-to-face contact with manufacturers and sector leaders. A mathematical model was implemented using the gPROMS modelling platform. It is able to simulate steady state operations and run optimization analysis of the process performance. The impact of key operating and design parameters, such as the set-point bath concentration and the DD and MD membrane areas, respectively, was investigated and the optimal arrangement was identified. Finally, operating variables and design parameters were optimized simultaneously in a nonlinear framework as a tradeoff between profitability and environmental impact. We show how the integration of new technologies into the traditional pickling industry could provide a significant benefit for the issues of process sustainability, which are currently pressing
Fidelity versus Vanguard: Comparing the Performance of the Two Largest Mutual Fund Families
This paper compares the risk and return of investing in equity mutual funds provided by the world's two largest mutual fund families: Fidelity and Vanguard over a long horizon. We believe this will help guide investors; this study is an example of the calculations that mutual fund companies should facilitate by being required to provide accurate, accessible and free data. Over the entire period 1977 through 2003 both Fidelity's (no load) and Vanguard's diversified U.S. funds out returned the Wilshire 5000 index; Fidelity's portfolio out returned Vanguard's portfolio by 0.62 % per year but under returned it by 0.39 % when risk adjusted.
The role of Computer Aided Process Engineering in physiology and clinical medicine
This paper discusses the potential role for Computer Aided Process Engineering (CAPE) in developing engineering analysis and design approaches to biological systems across multiple levels—cell signalling networks, gene, protein and metabolic networks, cellular systems, through to physiological systems. The 21st Century challenge in the Life Sciences is to bring together widely dispersed models and knowledge in order to enable a system-wide understanding of these complex systems. This systems level understanding should have broad clinical benefits. Computer Aided Process Engineering can bring systems approaches to (i) improving understanding of these complex chemical and physical (particularly molecular transport in complex flow regimes) interactions at multiple scales in living systems, (ii) analysis of these models to help to identify critical missing information and to explore the consequences on major output variables resulting from disturbances to the system, and (iii) ‘design’ potential interventions in in vivo systems which can have significant beneficial, or potentially harmful, effects which need to be understood. This paper develops these three themes drawing on recent projects at UCL. The first project has modeled the effects of blood flow on endothelial cells lining arteries, taking into account cell shape change resulting in changes in the cell skeleton which cause consequent chemical changes. A second is a project which is building an in silico model of the human liver, tieing together models from the molecular level to the liver. The composite model models glucose regulation in the liver and associated organs. Both projects involve molecular transport, chemical reactions, and complex multiscale systems, tackled by approaches from CAPE.
Chemical Engineers solve multiple scale problems in manufacturing processes – from molecular scale through unit operations scale to plant-wide and enterprise wide systems – so have an appropriate skill set for tackling problems in physiology and clinical medicine, in collaboration with life and clinical scientists
Analysis and simulation of scale-up potentials in reverse electrodialysis
The Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) process has been widely accepted as a viable and promising technology to produce electric energy from salinity difference (salinity gradient power - e.g. using river water/seawater, or seawater and concentrated brines). Recent R&D efforts demonstrated how an appropriate design of the RED unit and a suitable selection of process conditions may crucially enhance the process performance. With this regard, a process simulator was developed and validated with experimental data collected on a lab-scale unit, providing a new modelling tool for process optimisation.
In this work, performed within the REAPower project (www.reapower.eu), a process simulator previously proposed by the same authors has been modified in order to predict the behaviour of a cross-flow RED unit. The model was then adopted to investigate the influence of the most important variables (i.e. solution properties and stack geometry) on the overall process performance. In particular, the use of different concentrations and flow rates for the feed streams have been considered, as well as different aspect ratios in asymmetric stacks. Moreover, the influence of the scaling-up a RED unit was investigated, starting from a 22x22 cm2 100 cell pairs lab-stack, and simulating the performance of larger stacks up to a 44x88 cm2 500 cell pairs unit.
Finally, different scenarios are proposed for a prototype-scale RED plant, providing useful indications for the technology scale-up towards 1 kW of power production, relevant to the installation of a real prototype plant in Trapani (Italy) being the final objective of the R&D activities of the REAPower project

Essays in Conveyancing and Property Law
Professor Robert Rennie has been one of the most influential voices in Scots private law over the past thirty years. Highly respected as both an academic and a practitioner, his contribution to the development of property law and practice has been substantial and unique. This volume celebrates his retirement from the Chair of Conveyancing at the University of Glasgow in 2014 with a selection of essays written by his peers and colleagues from the judiciary, academia and legal practice. Each chapter covers a topic of particular interest to Professor Rennie during his career, from the historical development of property law rules through to the latest developments in conveyancing practice and the evolution of the rules of professional negligence. Although primarily Scottish in focus, the contributions will have much of interest to lawyers in any jurisdiction struggling with similar practical problems, particularly those with similar legal roots such as the Netherlands and South Africa. As a whole, this collection is highly recommended to students, practitioners and academics

F. Stanton, ROMIZ B3977.

Remarks. This species was originally described from southeastern Florida as Aglaophenia gracilis by Allman (1877). That name is a permanently invalid junior primary homonym of Aglaophenia gracilis Lamouroux, 1816 (ICZN Art. 57.2). Nutting (1900) recognized the homonymy and proposed Aglaophenia dubia as a replacement name for Allman’s species.

Aglaophenia dubia was referred to the synonymy of A. elongata Meneghini, 1845, a Mediterranean species, by Bedot (1921). Some subsequent authors who studied the species adopted that proposed synonymy (Leloup 1937; Van Gemerden-Hoogeveen 1965; Bogle 1975; Wedler 1975; Wenner et al. 1984; Jones 2002), while others did not (Fraser 1944; Deevey 1954; Rees & Thursfield 1965; Vervoort 1968). Bogle (1975) noted several differences between her material from the Straits of Florida and the original account of A. elongata by Meneghini (1845), but with considerable reservation retained that name for the western Atlantic species. Hydroids of the same morphotype from Bermuda were compared by me (Calder 1997) with accounts of the Mediterranean species by Svoboda & Cornelius (1991), as well as with material of A. elongata from Capo d’Enfola, Elba, Italy (ROMIZ B1231). A number of differences in the two were noted, particularly in corbula morphology. Corbulae of hydroids from Bermuda were elongate rather than egg-shaped, there were 6–14 instead of 4–6 pairs of nematocladia, free ribs were frequent instead of being absent, and peduncles bore 1–3 hydrothecae instead of just one. I therefore concluded that A. dubia was valid. Moreover, Svoboda and Cornelius noted that records of A. elongata outside the Mediterranean seemed erroneous.

Aglaophenia dubia and A. flowersi Nutting, 1900, the latter originally described from near Sand Key, Florida, have been considered identical (Leloup 1937; Bogle 1975; Calder 1997), and as such are simultaneous synonyms. Precedence was assigned to the name A. dubia following the First Reviser Principle (ICZN Art. 24.2) in nomenclature (Calder 1997). Additional taxonomic remarks on A. dubia are given in Bogle (1975, as A. elongata) and Calder (1997).

This species is usually found at intermediate depths in the warm western Atlantic. Its known bathymetric range is 11–274 m (Bogle 1975, as A. elongata).

Reported distribution. Atlantic coast of Florida.
