Gamma dose rate measurements in dwellings of Campania region, South Italy
A survey of gamma exposure in dwellings of Campania region, southern Italy has been performed using
Thermo Luminescent Dosimeters (TLD). In each dwelling TLDs were exposed for six months in the room
where the inhabitant spent most of their time, generally the bedroom or living room. The arithmetic
mean was found to be 264 111 nGy/h, after the subtraction of the cosmic contribution. The effects of
building materials and geographic location were also examined. Using UNSCEAR model, the annual
effective dose due to indoor gamma radiation was evaluated and it was found to be 1.3 mSv/y, that is
higher than Italian national average of 0.4 mSv/y

Combined effect of radiotherapy and photodynamic therapy on in vitro human prostate model
Human prostate cancer cells were evaluated for growth after photodynamic therapy, radiotherapy, and combined treatment. Indocyanine green was tested as a photosensitizer and radiosensitizer. Two human cell lines were used: PC-3 derived from prostate carcinoma, and EPN derived from normal prostate tissue. The light source used for the photoactivation experiments was a diode laser peaked at 805 nm. The light dose incident on cells was 108 J/cm(2). Ionizing radiation was produced by a linear accelerator, and the dose was 2, 4 and 6 Gy. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by measuring the colony forming ability of cells. Our results show that indocyanine green induces cell death by photoactivation, but it does not act as a radiosensitizer if used with ionizing radiation. The combined treatment of photodynamic therapy and radiotherapy produces an additive effect which does not depend on the sequence of the two treatments. Combined treatments could be more useful since they allow the reduction of the ionizing radiation dose to obtain the same effect as one obtainable by radiotherapy alone
BIOKIS: A Model Payload for MultidisciplinaryExperiments in Microgravity
In this paper we report about the BIOKIS
payload: a multidisciplinary set of experiments and
measurements in the fields of Biology (4) and Dosimetry
(3) performed in microgravity. BIOKIS took advantage of the last STS-134 Endeavour mission and
engineering state of the art in Space Life Science. The
BIOKIS payload is compact, efficient, and capable to
host experiments with different samples and science disciplines. Moreover, the time overlap of biological experiments and dosimetry measurements will produce more insightful information
