One health: professional stakeholder engagement key to tackling zoonotic disease
Globally, endemic and emergent disease risks persist as significant challenges to human and animal health. Rural livestock farming communities in low and middle-income countries are disproportionately affected by zoonoses and animal diseases due to poverty and concomitant poorly available health and veterinary services. Dr. Alison Z. Pyatt, Dr. Stephen C. Mansbridge and Dr. Vetja Haakuria explain why a One Health approach to tackling zoonosis is now broadly advocated and a successful strategy requires sector stakeholder recognition, inclusion, and engagement to ensure a holistic response to a complex problem
THE QUEST FOR IDENTITY IN ALISON BECHDEL\u27S NOVELS: FUN HOME IN ARE YOU MY MOTHER?
V magistrski nalogi smo analizirali dve deli, ki jih je napisala avtorica Alison Bechdel, naslovljeni Fun home in Are you my mother? In this thesis, we analysed two works by the author Alison Bechdel, titled Fun Home and Are you My Mother? By analysing the pictures and words, we identified expressions of femininity and masculinity throughout the novel and determined whether they corresponded according to gender, to see if there were any variations. We also focused on the author’s search for identity, as well as her father’s. We presented the possibility of self-healing through graphic novels and determined if this was the case in Alison Bechdel’s work
Catholicism and Protestantism in the Elizabethan Era in Selected Works of Alison Weir
Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat střet dvou náboženství, katolicismu a protestantismu, ve Velké Británii šestnáctého století. Práce charakterizuje dvě královny z Tudorovské dynastie - Marii I a Alžbětu I, přičemž každá vyznávala odlišnou víru. Další částí bakalářské práce popisuje literaturu a divadlo alžbětinské doby, především dva přední autory Williama Shakespeara and Edmunda Spensera. Analytická část práce se zaměřuje na rozepře dvou královských sester, a jaký dopad měla na Alžbětu I náboženská povstání. Analýza se zabývá knihami autorky Alison Weirové, a to jejími fikcemi Princezna Alžběta a Nevinná zrádkyně, a literaturou faktu The Life of Elizabeth I.This bachelor's thesis aims to analyse the clash of two religions, Catholicism and Protestantism, in the United Kingdom in the sixteenth century. The work characterizes two royal sisters of the Tudor dynasty - Mary I and Elizabeth I, who professed different religious beliefs. Another part of the thesis describes literature and theatre in the Elizabethan period, highlighting the authors William Shakespeare and Edmund Spenser. The analytical part of the thesis focuses on the quarrels between the two sisters and the impacts of religious uprisings on the life of Elizabeth I. The analysis is based on works of the author Alison Weir, namely her fictions The Lady Elizabeth and Innocent Traitor and the non-fiction The Life of Elizabeth I.Ústav moderních jazyků a literatu
Equine Anthelmintic Resistance: Horse Owner and Yard Manager Perception of the Barriers Affecting Strategic Control Measures in England
Equine anthelmintic resistance poses a threat to the health and welfare of horses worldwide. With no new imminent anthelmintic classes, it is vital to decrease the resistance rate and preserve available classes. Traditional indiscriminate anthelmintic use is not synonymous with a strategic control ideology; however, many continue to implement outdated practices. In comparison to livestock farmers, there have been few social science studies examining horse owner behaviours. This study aimed to understand the perceived barriers faced by horse owners and yard managers to adopting a strategic approach to helminth control, and to explore their experiences. Semi-structured interviews permitted the exploration of the stakeholders’ beliefs, opinions, experiences, attitudes, and behaviours. Personal resources, internal influences, and external influences were identified by participants as the barriers to adoption of strategic controls. Two further themes impacting effective implementation of strategic controls emerged surrounding helminth information and source, as well as accurate dosing. Challenges associated with anthelmintic administration and bodyweight estimation suggest that inaccurate dosing is prevalent. Industry-wide implementation of a single ‘best practice’ could support prescriber decision-making to encourage uptake of effective strategic helminth controls. The barriers identified in this study could help influence guidance given to horse owners through a better understanding of their beliefs and behaviours
Hybrid Modelling and Simulation (M&S): Driving Innovation in the Theory and Practice of M&S
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from IEEE via the DOI in this recordHybrid Simulation (HS) is the application of two or more simulation techniques (e.g., ABS, DES, SD) in a
single M&S study. Distinct from HS, Hybrid Modelling (HM) is defined as the combined application of
simulation approaches (including HS) with methods and techniques from the broader OR/MS literature and
also across disciplines. In this paper, we expand on the unified conceptual representation and classification
of hybrid M&S, which includes both HS (Model Types A-C), hybrid OR/MS models (D, D.1) and crossdisciplinary hybrid models (Type E), and assess their innovation potential. We argue that model types
associated with HM (D, D.1, E), with its focus on OR/MS and cross-disciplinary research, are particularly
well-placed in driving innovation in the theory and practice of M&S. Application of these innovative HM
methodologies will lead to innovation in the application space as new approaches in stakeholder
engagement, conceptual modelling, system representation, V&V, experimentation, etc. are identified
BSRLM geometry working group: establishing a professional development network to support teachers using dynamic mathematics software GeoGebra
The embedding of technology into mathematics teaching is known to be a complex process. GeoGebra, an open-source dynamic mathematics software that incorporates geometry and algebra into a single package, is proving popular with teachers - yet solely having access to such technology can be insufficient for the successful integration of technology into teaching. This paper reports on aspects of an NCETM-funded project that involved nine experienced teachers collaborating in developing ways of providing professional development and support for other teachers across England in the use of GeoGebra in teaching mathematics. The participating teachers tried various approaches to better integrate the use of GeoGebra into the mathematics curriculum (especially in geometry) and they designed and led professional development workshops for other teachers. As a result, the project initiated a core group which has started to be a source of support and professional development for other teachers of mathematics in the use of GeoGebra
The rationale for a wider concept of Inclusive Education for teacher education: A case-study of Serbia
Teacher education for inclusive education (IE) is recognized as vital for improving quality and equity in education globally. In the Western Balkan countries it is also part of the transition process towards joining the European Union and has attracted international funding for IE-related projects. A key finding from research funded by the European Training Foundation, carried out by the authors as members of a seven-country research team in 2009-2010, was that the prevailing local understanding of IE was very narrow. In this article we hypothesize the reasons for this finding. We use a case study of school and teacher education systems in Serbia to explore how this understanding has constrained the development of IE and associated teacher education and limited the efficacy of some recent internationally supported developments. We identify both challenges and possible ways forward for teacher education for IE based on promoting a concept of IE that is both collaboratively agreed and comprehensive. © 2012 UNESCO IBE

(The) man, his body, and his society: masculinity and the male experience in English and Scottish medicine c.1640-c.1780.
This thesis examines the relationship(s) between medicine, the body and societal codes of masculinity in England and Scotland between c.1640 and c.1780. It responds to the way in which the men in histories of post-1660 masculinity are often disembodied, and to the comparative absence of men’s gendered experiences from the history of medicine. Its findings show that in both centuries the experience of being a man with a body that was the site of health and sickness was an open, candid, and often communal, one, inside and outside of the formal medical encounter. Thus, and on both sides of 1700, ill men had full freedom in the pursuit and acceptance of medical, familial and social assistance, while their physical suffering, and associated emotional distress, was met with sympathy. With their sick bodies the sites of honest self-examination and open discussion, it was in part this very public nature of their sicknesses that allowed men, as a gender and as individuals, independence and agency in their non-commercial health care. Indeed, later-seventeenth- and eighteenth-century men suffered no constraints in their ability to respond to the vulnerabilities of their bodies, even where this involved behaviours or attributes allegedly associated with women and femininity, or inconsistent with ideals of active, independent, masculinity.
These findings indicate, therefore, great continuity across the period 1640-1780, and not only in masculine ideals of and involving the male corporeality. There seems to have been significant consistency across time in men’s social and medical experiences of both sickness and their pre-emptive preparation for it, and in an apparent collective self-confidence concerning their corporeal masculinity, their sex, and, possibly, even their sexual potential. Indeed, these sources suggest that seventeenth- and eighteenth-century men had a resilient sense of self-identity (and personal masculinity), conceptually separable from the corporeal body and its known fragilities
Kina etniczne Los Angeles
The author investigates ethnic movie theatres in Los Angeles in the mid-20th century, situating them in the city’s cinema landscape. By tracing the history of the LA German-language theatre, the La Tosca Filmbühne, she highlights how the cinema attempted to create a community of Germanness through its exhibition practices. She positions the audiences’ draw to these movie theatres in the context of Alison Landsberg’s notion of prosthetic memory, regarding the films screened there as evoking images and reminiscences of the viewers’ home countries. Through extensive archival research, the author also highlights the other Angeleno ethnic cinemas – Spanish language cinemas in particular – to examine what role foreign language theatres played in the cinemagoing communities of immigrant populations.Autorka bada kina etniczne w Los Angeles w połowie XX w., umiejscawiając je w szerszym krajobrazie kinowym miasta.
