Multidisciplinary study of Holocene archaeological soils in an upland Mediterranean site: Natural versus anthropogenic environmental changes at Cecita Lake, Calabria, Italy

    No full text
This paper highlights results of a multidisciplinary and multi-analytical study of Holocene archaeological soils around Cecita Lake (Sila massif, Calabria, southern Italy), which represents a typical upland Mediterranean environment. It is focused on assessment of climatic and environmental changes that took place since late Neolithic to Roman times, trying to discriminate natural from anthropogenic signals. Based on an integration of archaeological, geomorphological, stratigraphic, pedological, volcanological and soil charcoal (pedoanthracological) data, the following paleoclimatic/environmental reconstruction is proposed: a warm and humid, seasonally contrasted climate, with an overall geomorphological stability suited for soil development, characterized the late prehistoric environment (Holocene climatic optimum), dominated by a widespread oak forest. The main pedogenetic processes consisted in organic matter accumulation, clay illuviation, phyllosilicate and short-range order mineral neogenesis from weathering of granite and volcanic ash, sourced from late Pleistocene-Holocene eruptions of the Aeolian Islands. One or more mid-Holocene episodes of climate deterioration towards drier conditions (indicated by a decrease of clay translocation processes and possible irreversible dehydration of poorly-crystalline aluminosilicates into phyllosilicate clay minerals) promoted intense land degradation. This was in turn enhanced by increasing human activities for settlement and resource exploitation (among which deforestation and ploughing for agriculture), which led to a shift of the vegetation cover towards a dominant pine forest between 3kaBP and the Roman epoch. Humid and possibly cooler climatic conditions during the late Holocene are indicated by the decrease of clay illuviation, coupled with short-range order components prevailing over phyllosilicate clays during Roman soil formation

L'A. prende in esame i controversi rapporti tra i due artisti, nel primo decennio del secolo e, più tardi, nella produzione di carattere religioso. Severini risulta influenzato da Denis più di quanto sostenga negli scritti teorici. The Author examines the controversial relationships between the two artists, in the first decade of the century and later on, in their religious production. Severini appears influenced by Denis more than he declares in his theoretic writings

The essay deals retrospectively with the production of a new translation of Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida into contemporary Italian (published by the author with Feltrinelli in 2015). Literary translation problems and open questions about the differences between translation 'for the page' and 'for the stage' are explored within a historical-linguistic perspective

Archiviare il contemporaneo. Lo Spazio di Via Lazzaro Palazzi come paradigma

The archive is an inclusive and never static memory device. Thus, it is necessary to take care of it, carefully considering the specificity of collectibles, reviewing and updating continuously the criteria and methods of selection, cataloging and conservation. Only through this assumption of responsibility, which also involves raising awareness of public attention, the archive redefines itself in the present, and in anticipation of the future, as a place of (mnestic, political, social, cultural) possibility. This article presents how the project of the enhancement of the Archive of the artist-run space Lo Spazio di Via Lazzaro Palazzi (Milan, 1989-1992) at the Museo del Novecento di Milano was created collectively -- as a collaboration between the artists, the museum and the scientific coordinators of the project (among which the author) -- with this awareness. The wish is that the constitution, donation and enhancement of this specific Archive will represent a paradigm for the preservation, accessibility and (public) knowledge of contemporary artist archives

Rationale and protocol of MetNET-2 trial: Lanreotide Autogel plus metformin in advanced gastrointestinal or lung neuroendocrine tumors

Metformin (MET) has recently emerged as a potentially active agent in cancer prevention and treatment. MET is thought to exert its antitumor effects either via modification of systemic metabolism or through cell-autonomous effects (e.g., activation of AMPK and inhibition of the mTOR pathway). Preliminary findings of the PRIME-NET study suggest that the addition of MET to treatment with everolimus (EVE) and/or somatostatin analogs (SSAs) can provide clinical benefit in diabetic neuroendocrine tumor (NET) patients. In light of this and other retrospective evidence of MET’s anticancer activity in NETs, prospective studies are needed. A pilot, single-arm, open-label, prospective study (MetNET-2 trial, NCT02823691) was designed to evaluate the safety of MET in combination with lanreotide in well-differentiated gastrointestinal (WD GI) and lung NETs

Target therapies plus somatostatin analogues in NETs: a network meta-analysis

Although combination therapy is not recommended in patients with gastro-entero-pancreatic (GEP) neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), this strategy is widely used in clinical practice. This network meta-analysis of randomized trials evaluates targeted therapies and somatostatin analogues in GEP advanced NETs, either alone or in combination, comparing the efficacy of different single or combined treatment strategies in terms of progression-free survival (PFS). Interventions were grouped as analogues, everolimus, everolimus plus SSAs, sunitinib and placebo. In a secondary analysis, we also assessed the efficacy of individual specific pharmacological treatments versus placebo or each other. From 83 studies identified, 8 randomized controlled trials were selected, with a total of 1849 patients with either functioning or non-functioning NETs. The analysis confirmed the superiority of all treatments over placebo (HR ranging from 0.34, 95% CI: 0.24-0.37 with the combination of everolimus plus SSAs to 0.42, 0.31-0.57 with the analogues; moderate quality of evidence). On ranking analysis, the combination of everolimus plus SSA (P score=0.86) and then everolimus alone (P score=0.65) ranked highest in increasing PFS. On comparative evaluation of different interventions, pasireotide (P score=0.96) and everolimus+octreotide (P score=0.82) ranked as the best pharmacological treatment options. Our findings support the use of combination therapy in the treatment of functioning and non-functioning GEP NETs. The role of pasireotide should be explored in selected subgroups of patients. Last, the combination of everolimus and octreotide appears promising and should be more widely considered in clinical practice
