The Myth of Io and Female Cyborgic Identity
The figure of Io, the priestess of Hera seducted by Zeus and turned into a cow that wanders from Argo to Egypt pursued by a gadfly, shares in Hera’s bovine imagery and can be considered as a mythical paradigm of the unavoidable ‘yoke’ of love and marriage for women. She actually takes back a fully human aspect by means of conceiving and bearing Epaphus, a son with a name that tells his exceptional conception and divine birth. In the light of readings of some core studies concerning the theory of the cyborg, this paper aims at showing that the girl-heifer – sometimes also represented as a girl-bull, a possible link with Dionysus as hypostasis of sexual potency and fertility – does not only undergo a metamorphosis but also inhabits the space of hybrid identity, and considers Io's hybridity in relation to female sexuality and the social position of women in marriage
L’ecotossicologia nella movimentazione dei sedimenti portuali: assetto normativo italiano e sua evoluzione.
Harbors are affected by high sedimentation rates that require frequent dredging operation to allow navigability. On the other hand, coastal areas located near to harbors are often affected by severe erosion processes and represent the perfect place for the final disposal of dredged sediments. In spite of that, trace elements and organic chemicals could significantly pollute sediments collected from harbors also producing significant ecotoxicological effects on aquatic species. For this reason, dredged sediments are often considered as wastes in spite of the fact that they represent a huge resource to manage coastal erosion. As sediments represent both a potential threat and a resource in coastal areas; recently Italian Law (D.M. 173/2016) ruled general features for the evaluation of the quality of sediments before the release of authorization for dredging of bottoms from harbor ecosystem. Furthermore, for the very first time, the requirement to preferentially evaluate ecotoxicological effects as key aspect on the basis of which sediment classifications are performed and to consider dredged sediments as the preferentially resource to manage coastal erosion phenomena were both introduced by the Law. This paper highlight the evolution of Italian Law for concerning sediment dredging in coastal ecosystems focusing, in particular, on: i) operative procedures for the characterization; ii) quality evaluation of sediments; iii) classification of characterized materials and management options according to the resulting class of quality; iv) definition of environmental monitoring strategies. This paper highlights, in particular, recent advances in the sediment management coming from the introduction of the D.M. 173/2016 and the principal weaknesses, which must be implemented by future regulatory update
The main stages in the myth of the Argive Io are seduction by Zeus, being guarded by “all-seeing” Argos, her bovine hybridization and mad wanderings from Argos to Egypt, and finally her return to the human form and the birth of Epaphus, Zeus’ son. The agent of Io’s hybridization is either Zeus or Hera. Another aspect of this myth is the rejection of one’s love – also of marriage – for the purpose of preserving a condition of virginity and of “freedom” that is anomalous for women. If it is the case that Hera is the cause of Io’s evils, the girl herself appears as the paradigm of the unavoidable “yoke” of love and marriage for women, especially in Aeschylus’ Suppliant Women. Io shares the same bovine imagery as Hera (who is βοῶπις, “ox-eyed”), and her myth has substantial similarities with the myth of the Proitids. Both myths highlight the notion of the necessity of marriage (γάμος): Io rids herself of suffering, as a heifer harassed by a gadfly, by means of conceiving a child and bearing it.
In the light of the bovine imagery, and in consideration of Io’s representation not just as a heifer-girl, but even as a bull-girl – a hypostasis of Dionysus, associated with sex and fertility – this paper aims at considering Io's hybridity in relation to female sexuality and the social position of women in marriage
This article aims at an analysis of the evidence regarding links between the death of Pythagoras and the cults of the Muses and Demeter (the oldest source is Timaeus, FGrHist 566 F 131), taking into account the eschatological symbolism of music and the Mistery rites, and the function of memory among the Pythagoreans. The evidence in question seems to presuppose notions pertaining to Mysteries and katabasis, that are familiar not only with the cult of Demeter, but also with that of the Muses, and makes reference to the role of women among the Pythagoreans. On the other hand, taking into account the anti-pythagorean riots of the mid-fifth century BC, the cult of Demeter seems to be aimed at defending and strengthening the political role of the Pythagoreans in Croton
The Domestication of the Other. Hermes, the Lyre and the Satyrs between Violence and Civilization
Within the general frame of violence and its representations in Ancient Greece, this paper focuses on the myth of Hermes inventing the lyre and on the relationship between this god and the Satyrs. The representation of Satyrs on vessels used at Symposia clearly shows the civilizing effects of music, that allows a shift from “savagery” to “culture”, and from the “other” to the “self”
Exposure to pet-made microplastics: Particle size and pH effects on biomolecular responses in mussels
This study aims to evaluate the expression of biomarkers of oxidative stress (LPO, GPx, AtCh, SOD) in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) following the exposure to suspensions of microparticles irregular shaped fibres of Polyethylene terephthalate of different sizes (small 5–60 μm, S-PET; medium 61–499 μm, M-PET; large 500–3000 μm, L-PET) at a single dose of 0.1 g/L. Mussels were tested under two different starting pH conditions of marine water: standard (8.0) and acidified (7.5). The results obtained from this study show that: i) PET microplastics are able to induce biochemical stress in mussels; ii) among the biomarkers tested, LPO and GPx were more effective in detecting the stress induced by microplastic in both initial pH conditions; iii) the expression of biomarkers was influenced by the size of the microparticle. In particular, greater effects were associated with the largest PET particle tested (0.5–3.0 mm); iv) regarding the effect of pH, in experiments starting from 7.5 pH the animals showed a lower biomarker expression than those starting from 8.0 pH
The Project of Maurizio Sacripanti’s Science Museum
The essay aims to explain, through relation and drawings, the process that led to the critical redrawing of the New Science Museum in Rome.
In order to understand the 1983 project, it was necessary to establish the key points of Maurizio Sacripanti’s design process. The first part is entirely addressed to the biography, specifically analyzing the salient points of his life and considering the artistic and literary influences that at that time gravitated in the Roman context. The second part analyzes Sacripanti’s thought in order to understand every facet of his architectural language, together with the study of the most significant projects, in order to draw the necessary conclusions about his modus operandi.
In the final part of the essay, a critical reflection on the project for the New Science Museum is carried out, starting from the exhibition “5 Billions of years ago”, up to the elaboration of the drawings came to us, associated with the critical re-drawing in charge that will analyze the composition, volumes and spaces in detail, in order to compare the drawings of 1983 with the realized works, revisiting some aspects to ensure the completeness of the unbuilt project, which represents one of the most ambitious and revolutionary works of Sacripanti
