Final Offer Arbitration with Asymmetric Evidence

    No full text
As disputants increasingly rely upon arbitration it is critical to understand outcomes that are likely to arise from mechanisms like final offer arbitration. While a sizable experimental literature investigating strategic behavior in final offer arbitration exists, that work has overwhelmingly focused on situations where the arbitrator’s beliefs about the appropriate resolution are symmetric and uninfluenced by the disputants’ cases. This paper considers a setting where the arbitrator’s beliefs depend on the strength of each disputant’s case. We find disputant responses to changes in the relative strength of their case generally follow comparative statics predictions. Further, we find that final offers are closer to theoretical predictions when the mean of the arbitrator’s preferences favors the disputant and the variance of those preferences is lower. However, we also observe that disputants become more aggressive the more the arbitrator’s preferences are skewed in the disputant’s favor

An Afrikan centered critique of European global environment and development cultural politics: A political ecology case study of Madagasikara, 1997

    No full text
This study focuses on the politics of European global environment and development ideologies, philosophies, and policies and explores the emerging complex socio-cultural and economic issues therein from an Afrikan centered approach. The objective of this study was to demystify the global European neocolonial and imperialist political ecology agenda, accent on Afrika. A political ecology case study of Madagasikara was conducted which included a seven month field stay in Ambodirotro, Madagasikara. The paticular ecological focus was on the construction of the causes and impact of deforestation at the local and national levels. Significant results showed that the politics of ecology in Afrika is dialectically related to: 1) the historical ethnic, class, gender, and natural resource conflicts between Europeans and Afrikans, 2) the global consequences of changing state and market forces and global power relations, and, 3) the differences in Afrikan and European culture, cosmology and world view, and the symbolic meanings each attributes to nature and human-nature relationships. A call for indigenous Afrikans to regain their ancestral lands was made

Brenda Cranney. Local Environment and Lived Experience: The Mountain Women of Himachal Pradesh. New Delhi: Sage Publications, 2001. Hardbound. 287 pages. Indian Rs 495.00.

Rural communities in the less developed countries depend for their livelihood on a subsistence economy based on agriculture and animal husbandry. So is the case of rural communities in India. The state of Himachal Pradesh is an example where forests are the main source of food and income. Inappropriate or badly managed development programmes in these areas have resulted in the depletion of natural resources, causing environmental degradation. This naturally affects the lives of the local population, especially the poor women of the area, as forests provide the main source of output vital to their household economy. Local Environment and Lived Experience is the microanalysis of women in the two villages, Ichasser and Dev Nagar, in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It provides a critical overview of development programmes and how these programmes have changed the daily pattern of their lives. The change is explained in the own voices of local women—describing their intervention, coping strategies, and resistance. The author has explored different features of village life, household economies as well as women’s agency affected by the implementation and abandonment of development programmes
