    Renowned American astrophysicist, Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson, filmed an episode of 'In Class With…' at Swinburne with Professor Alan Duffy. Dr Tyson also dropped into the WM Keck Observatory Remote Viewing Facility and surprised Swinburne students and staff conducting a live observation. Dr Tyson visited with Cosmos creator Ann Druyan as part of a worldwide promotional tour for the latest instalment of the documentary series, Cosmos: Possible Worlds.     Swinburne astronomers Associate Professor Alan Duffy and Dr Rebecca Allen have received a National Science Week grant to present public events in August exploring the invisible Universe that surrounds us. There will be two live Virtual Reality (VR) talks based on the successful Science in VR app using bespoke cardboard VR headsets, coordinated regional viewing parties, and tailored educational material for all. One will be a day-time event for families at the State Library, followed by an evening event for adults at the Mountain Goat Brewery, regional viewing parties and online video streaming. Whether you're dreaming of a career in STEM or just curious about how scientists connect with the world, this panel explores how we can share the wonder of the universe with everyone, from the classroom to TikTok. This panel discussion took place on Tuesday 15th July 2025 at Swinburne's Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre (AMDC), located at Hawthorn campus. Panel Speakers Bios: Dr Katie Mack Dr Katherine (Katie) Mack holds the Hawking Chair in Cosmology and Science Communication at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Her research focuses on dark matter, the early universe, and the fate of the cosmos. A passionate science communicator, she’s the author of the acclaimed book The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking) and a regular contributor to Scientific American, Slate, BBC Science Focus, and Cosmos Magazine. Katie is also a recognisable voice in science communication online, with hundreds of thousands of followers across BlueSky, Instagram, and Facebook. As part of his work, Rami uses Australia’s iconic Parkes radio telescope (Murriyang) to study these exotic objects known as pulsars, looking into their ongoing stability in his research work. Rami is also an established science communicator, heading up one of Australia’s most well-known space and astronomy community news platforms – SpaceAustralia.com Dr Sara Webb Dr Sara Webb is an astrophysicist and science communicator whose research explores the universe’s most energetic and explosive events. For her work she was recognised on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list. She is one of Australia's leading science communicators, with over 300 TV, radio and media interviews worldwide, and is Swinburne's most read author for The Conversation. Sara leads programs like the Swinburne Youth Space Innovation Challenge and is passionate about inspiring the curiosity of the next generation of scientists. Innovative start-up mDetect has developed a new technology platform that uses particles from space – called muons – to ‘see the unseeable’, visualising underground conditions for mining and construction companies. Co-founded by renowned astrophysicist Professor Alan Duffy, mDetect is a spin-out company from Swinburne. It is based on Professor Duffy’s research team’s efforts into measuring subsurface rock structures using muons.
