Fatal adverse reaction to ketorolactromethamine in asthmatic patient
A case of an asthmatic woman who collapsed within a
few minutes after intramuscular ketorolac tromethamine (KT) injection
is reported. Autopsy findings revealed anatomic evidence of a
recent asthma attack. KT was found to be present in the blood at a
concentration within the therapeutic range and consistent with the
administered dose. Based on the timing of the collapse in relation to
the KT administration, death was attributed to an adverse reaction to
KT, resulting in acute bronchospasm and cardiac arrest, with asthma
as an underlying contributing factor. In this case, asthma alone was
not responsible for the death of the patient but only a contributing
factor. Physicians have to be aware that in asthmatic patients
bronchospasm can be induced by drugs among which aspirin or
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as KT are the most
common; therefore, death may have an iatrogenic cause. The paper
also describes the pathogenic mechanism of an adverse reaction to
such drugs and analytical methods for the isolation and detection of
KT in postmortem blood
The analyticity region of the hard sphere gas. Improved bounds
We find an improved estimate of the radius of analyticity of the pressure of the hard-sphere gas in d dimensions. The estimates are determined by the volume of multidimensional regions that can be numerically computed. For d=2, for instance, our estimate is about 40% larger than the classical one. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC
Diffusive-ballistic transition in random walks with long-range self-repulsion
We prove that a class of random walks on Z(2) with long-range self-repulsive interactions have a diffusive-ballistic phase transition
An improvement of the Lovász local lemma via cluster expansion
An old result by Shearer relates the Lov´asz Local Lemma with the independent set
polynomial on graphs, and consequently, as observed by Scott and Sokal, with the partition
function of the hard core lattice gas on graphs. We use this connection and a recent result on
the analyticity of the logarithm of the partition function of the abstract polymer gas to get
an improved version of the Lov´asz Local Lemma. As applications we obtain tighter bounds
on conditions for the existence of latin transversal matrices and the satisfiability of k-SAT
forms
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
