Langevin dynamics in constant pressure extended systems
The advantages of performing Langevin dynamics in extended systems are discussed. A simple Langevin dynamics scheme for producing the canonical ensemble is reviewed, and is then extended to the Hoover ensemble. We show that the resulting equations of motion generate the isobaric–isothermal ensemble. The Parrinello–Rahman ensemble is then discussed and we show that despite the presence of intrinsic probability gradients in this system, a Langevin dynamics approach samples the extended phase space in the correct fashion. The implementation of these methods in the ab initio plane wave density functional theory code CASTEP [M. D. Segall, P. L. D. Lindan, M. J. Probert, C. J. Pickard, P. J. Hasnip, S. J. Clarke, and M. C. Payne, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 14, 2717 (2003)] is demonstrated
'Irretrievably broken'? introducing the life-story of the divorce reform act 1969
Book synopsis: The enactment of the Divorce Reform Act 1969 was a landmark moment in family law. Coming into force in 1971, it had a significant impact on legal practice and was followed by a dramatic increase in divorce rates, reflecting changes in social attitudes.
This new interdisciplinary collection explores the background to the 1969 Act and its influence on law and society. Bringing together scholars from law, sociology, history, demography, and film and literature, it reflects on the changes to divorce law and practice over the past 50 years, and the changing impact of divorce on different people in society, particularly women.
As such, it offers a 'biography' of this important piece of legislation, moving from its conception and birth, through its reception and development, to its imminent demise. Looking to the future, and to the new law introduced by the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020, this collection suggests ways for evaluating what makes a 'good' divorce law.

Microsatellite cross-amplification in coccolithophores: application in population diversity studies
The development and isolation of microsatellites entails a significant input of time and money. Therefore there is an interest in using existing microsatellites on species from which markers have not yet been developed. Conservation of six previously identified microsatellite loci in the marine coccolithophorid species Emiliana huxleyi was found in a survey of two bloom forming coccolithophorid species –Gephyrocapsa oceanica and Coccolithus pelagicus. The number of alleles per locus varied from 1 to 8, and half of the microsatellite loci tested showed 4 or more alleles. The microsatellite markers used in this study may be applied to other coccolithophorid species for population analysis, eliminating the time-consuming, costly development of microsatellite markers for other coccolithophorid species
Comparative seed dormancy and germination of eight annual species of ephemeral wetland vegetation in a Mediterranean climate
Ephemeral wetland vegetation (EWV) in the Mediterranean Basin appears in temporary wetlands where favourable hydrological conditions exist only for a short time and year-to-year variability is high. Here, we report results of the seed germination, dormancy and desiccation tolerance of eight annual species living in this vulnerable habitat. Experiments were performed in laboratory conditions under constant and alternating temperatures and using a 12-h daily photoperiod or continuous darkness. Whilst germination and dormancy differed between the species, seeds demonstrated an absolute light requirement and prefer cool temperatures to germinate (mean a parts per thousand currency sign15 A degrees C). Logistic regression analysis showed significant effects of alternating temperature in all the species except in Tillaea vaillantii whose germination was stimulated by constant temperature. Mean temperature was a significant term in the logistic models for the dormant species Cicendia filiformis, Linum radiola and T. vaillantii for which after-ripening was an effective dormancy-breaking treatment. From these results we infer three strategies of regeneration by seeds: (1) species germinating during the whole vegetative season (2) species germinating in a narrow temperature niche and (3) species requiring flooding (T. vaillantii). Seeds possessed orthodox storage behaviour (tolerating drying to 15 % relative humidity) and may be amenable to seed banking as a means of ex-situ conservation. We conclude that EWV species are adapted to the irregular presence of water with characteristics that are typical of neither truly aquatic nor wetland plants. These EWV species showed a more plastic germination response based on alternating and constant temperature sensitivity and a low proportion of dormant seeds
Optimal heat transfer design for district-heating and cooling pipelines in air-filled cavities
District-heating and/or cooling systems are gradually becoming
popular all over the world for heating and/or cooling of
large premises.
Current conventional practice for the DHC underground
distribution networks is to place the supply and the return pipelines
side-by-side in air-filled trencRe's. However, t present
investigation has shown that by optimising the location of the
pipelines, the thermal insulation provided by the air around the
pipes can be maximised. This is achieved by placing the hot pipeline
above the cold one, the exact position depending upon the
temperatures involved. For most purposes, it is recommended that
the displacement ratio for the hot pipe is to be at -0.7 or -0.08
and that of the cold pipe at 0.05 or 0.67 for district heating or
cooling respectively [i. e. the hot and cold pipes being placed in
the upper and lower halves of the trench respectively].
Each chapter is presented in such a way that it can be read
independently of the others as far as possible
