Omero, Maratona e Atene dalle ampie strade (Od. VII, 78-81). Una nota sulla rappresentazione dell’Atene micenea sotto i Pisistratidi

In commenting the celebrated passage of the Odyssey (VII 78-81) that describes the visit of the goddess Athena to the “well-built house of Erechtheus” on the Acropolis of Athens, scholars have focused on isolated features, such as the hapax legomenon name of the city in the singular accusative, or the attribute euryagyia. Other elements have been overlooked, such as the seemingly inconsistent route of the goddess from Scheria to Athens and the obscure mention of Marathon. This paper reappraises these elements to put forward a new interpretation of the passage. Rather than hinting at a Late Bronze Age origin, the unparalleled form of the city-name was necessary for metrical reasons, as it was modified by an attribute exclusively recurring in the singular to realize the fifth dactyl of the hexameter. The adjective euryagyia is used to equate Athens to both Mycenae and Troy in urban splendor and political importance. The reference to Marathon seems to imply that the goddess landed on the northeast coast of Attica, as if she were coming from Euboea or some other North Aegean island. This is entirely inconsistent with all the ancient traditions, which located the mythical island of Scheria at the westernmost limits of the world, but seems to hint at Peisistratus’ march in 547/6 BC, which started from Marathon and ledto his victory in the battle of Pallene. The author argues that Marathon is mentioned in this passage to acknowledge itsconnection with Peisistratus, and that the goddess Athena is accordingly represented as retracing Peisistratus’ route. This suggests that the passage is an interpolation of the 6th century BC

Long-term grain storage and political economy in Bronze age crete: Contextualizing Ayia Triada's silo complexes

Since the beginning of archaeological exploration on Crete, agricultural storage has attracted a great deal of scholarly interest. The discovery of several palaces on the island has provided a range of evidence concerning storage: the development of a complex written accounting system, the production of thousands of storage jars, the building of storerooms, and built installations apparently devoted to long-term grain storage (the so-called kouloures at Knossos, Malia, and Phaistos). However, the presence in nonpalatial sites of structures that can plausibly be interpreted as silo complexes for long-term grain storage has not attracted much attention. This article is concerned with the Late Bronze Age evidence from Ayia Triada in the Mesara Plain, which has four such complexes, two of which are still unpublished. By drawing on the results of recent fieldwork, I contrast these buildings with those of other Mycenaean and Near Eastern sites to place Ayia Triada in its wider Aegean and Mediterranean context. Through the use of information found in the local Linear A and nonlocal Linear B documents, together with the archaeological evidence, this article highlights the role that long-term grain storage played within the local political economy in the 14th and 13th centuries B.C.E

I Geositi del monte Etna: un caso studio del patrimonio geologico

    No full text

Getting out of a Dead End in Final Palatial Crete: Applying Space Syntax Analysis to the Casa dei Vani Aggiunti Progressivamente at Haghia Triada

the present paper intends to supplement the available description of both structures and finds from the LM III Villaggio by focusing on the most monumental building located within its borders, the Casa dei Vani Aggiunti Progressivamente (Privitera 2015a, 35-83), in the light of data deriving from the application of space syntax analysis (Hillier 1996; 2014). The idea of selecting such a building as a case-study essentially draws on Letesson’s researches concerning Neopalatial architecture (Letesson 2009, 2014), which conclusively showed how the arrangement and inner organization of about seventy Minoan buildings betray the existence of a subjacent architectural set of principles or a ‘genotype’. It is our contention that employing such a methodology makes it possible to raise several interpretative questions, such as to what extent Casa VAP shows formal links with the Neopalatial building tradition and whether the cultural code/s that inspired its layout evolved over its long period of life (ca. 150-175 years, from early LM IIIA2 through late LM IIIB)
