Extra classes, extra marks?: evaluation of a grade 8 study

    No full text
What grade at school should be considered as ideal for poor performers to receive extra tuition to catch up? Not Grade 8, says Cas Prinsloo, who found that at that stage it is probably too late for many learners. This is one of the conclusions reached in an HSRC study, designed together with the Western Cape Education Department and the Shuttleworth Foundation.

Extra classes = better marks, over time

Extra classes for poor performers in grade 8 have long-term benefits which may not show clearly early on. This finding from an 18-month study brings hope that the big challenge of how to improve the performance of learners who are far below par at any school stage, specifically in mathematics and English, can still be met, writes Cas Prinsloo.

The missing link: language skills crucial to mathematics and science

Research shows that inadequate language development contributes to weak performance at school, and in later life. Cas Prinsloo and Shawn Rogers explored the relationship between language and achievement in mathematics and science, as revealed in an initial analysis of the 2011 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

Most South Africans see basic education in the South African school system as a crucial foundation of their children's journey toward rapid life improvement - a life of employment and personal wellness. However, many children still dont acquire adequate literacy to reach this goal. Dr Cas Prinsloo and Nompumelelo Mohohlwane write about this challenge and the value of teacher coaching in schools in North West.

Learning with a little help from some friends

If 'learning to read' is ineffective, it will prevent students from later developing the ability of 'reading to learn'. This has devastating consequences for their future literacy, general academic achievement and career prospects. Jaqueline Harvey and Cas Prinsloo reflect on seeking help from the community in remedying critical components of the current crisis in schools relating to poorly developed reading and writing skills. Reading is a crucially important building block for future learning. Early intervention when learning is not happening is paramount for the development and future of learners in South Africa. The authors reflect on some of the lessons derived from a two-year intervention by siyaJabula siyaKhula (sJsK), a non-profit organisation (NPO) that supports processes of education on behalf of learners, schools and departments. sJsK used a unique learner-regeneration approach incorporating various elements, including community participation.
